2010-2011 Semester I
Issue # 3 .5 Exclusive Edition
Freedom
The epitome of freedom to a young person is the ability to choose
freely what one wants to do with their lives. Nothing enables that
freedom to choose like a diploma.
Here at JL ACE the key to that diploma is a blue form.
~ This is a time when getting the blues isn’t sad.

The freedom to choose
your career path and
have it be truly limitless
is something attainable
with a diploma.

A special SHOUT OUT to
Mr. Cabrera, Principal of CCC.
“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.” ~ Anatole France
“I saw what I was doing with my life last year and I came to my senses. I
saw the way I was headed and it made me decide to make something of myself.
I don‟t want to struggle in life. You only live once, make the best of it. Am I
wrong? Still, what intrigues me is how some minds starve themselves from
knowledge given to them and through the years hunger is what leads them to
feed it.
My classmates need to stop being lazy and get themselves straight instead of
following the crooked path. Life is great. I am attending STC. This is my
second semester and I‟m passing all my classes.” by Chris Piedra
“I still talk to Chris, Atom, very often. He‟s a good writer and he helps me
with my lyrics, but lately he‟s been using a lot of big words and I don‟t get it. I
asked him how he got his ideas. He told me to read. „Read and finish getting
your credits, so you can go to college. Stop being lazy.‟ So, I‟m reading.”
~ Luis Leon, YELS, SR 2012
“JL ACE helped me a lot with my credits
and my behavior. The teachers there
helped me. I would never have graduated
without the help of all my teachers at JL
ACE. Now I work for Magnum Force
Security taking care of people and places.
Making sure that they don‟t cause
damages and vandalism. At clubs I make
sure minors don‟t drink.” Roman Perez Perez, Roman, Security

Pascual will be attending STC to work on an associates in auto
collision tech. He will be the first in his family to attend
college. “They helped me a lot here. Little by little they pushed
me, so I could finish. Like Ms. Zuniga, Mrs. Bautista, Mr. Cantu,
Mr. Villarreal, Mr. Martinez, and Mr. Troncoso. They could have
said, „Look at this kid, he has a record, his age,‟ and forgotten
about me, but they didn‟t. They gave me many opportunities to
finish. Troncoso, he gave me lots of chances. He could‟ve given
up on me because it was hard for me to behave, but he didn‟t. He
helped me graduate. That‟s something that he didn‟t just give to
me, but to my parents as well. I did it for them and for me.”
Pascual Nabajar
Alex Espinosa, 19-year-old graduate of JL ACE, was ecstatic when he achieved the cred-
its needed to graduate this past December 2010. “
Even though I have no idea what Alex is talking about when he speaks about football, his
passion for it is evident by his tone and sheer knowledge of the game. Alex spends his free
time dragging his two brother‟s behinds through the mud while playing football in his
neighborhood. He spends the rest of his time just being a kid hanging out with his friends
talking about football and the occasional girls.
Alex came to La Joya ISD from Laredo, Texas in December of 2009 and he was loving
the Husky life. After Alex‟s recent trip with JL ACE staff to a college fair in September 2010,
he has a renewed interest in college after graduating this year. UTPA‟s business college is of
particular interest to Alex because he would like to eventually get a Bachelor Degree in
Business Administration, BBA, to own his own business.
“For now I fix car‟s; the motors. Later, I might own my own dealership.”
Don‟t be fooled by Alex‟s very polite and well mannered demeanor. He is an extraordinarily curious young man with very
big dreams. Given the opportunity he will keep you engaged for hours on end.

“I think Juarez-Lincoln ACE is a great school for people, like me, who want to finish or catch up with their credits. Many people say that this school is where all the bad kids go. I believe JL ACE is a place for second chances. I like this school because of the respect the students and faculty give me. Most of the staff from JL ACE are here to help the students accomplish their goals and are also very humble people like the guy that takes attendance in the office, Mr. Villarreal, that substitute teacher that is related to me somehow, and “The Man”
that runs the school.” Javier Garza
Garza, Javier, 12
“JL ACE has helped me because they are very strict on
attendance, like Mr. Villarreal. That is why I come everyday
to do the work and get my credits.” Alex De Leon
De Leon, Alexander, 12
When I graduate I‟m planning to go to college and pursue a career.
I‟m going to study for an engineer in petroleum and eventually work
for the Pemex Company. “ Patsy Rodriguez
Rodriguez, Patsy, 12
Bautista, Gloria, 12
“After graduating I‟m going to TSTC. I want to be able to afford
everything my baby needs and wants. As a mother, I have to think
hard about what I want to do with my life because another life
depends on me. Teen moms have to think ahead of time not just
focus on the present. I‟m going to be a radiologist not just for
myself, but for my family.” Gloria Bautista
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt

My name is Ruben Garcia, Riddle. The origin of my alter EGO came from my philosophy that people only know very small portions of themselves. A lot of people try to solve the RiDDLe of life, when the biggest RiDDLe is right in front of them when they stand in a mirror. I believe RiDDLes shouldn't be solved, but understood. It’s an enigma and a rare art form and art is brilliant...so, therefore I am a RiDDLe.
Interview by Luis Leon, aka YELS, J-L ACE student
“It is greater than God. It is more evil than the Devil.
Rich people need it. Poor people have it. If you eat it, you
will die. What am I?”
Ruben Garcia, RiDDLe, is a J-L ACE student and
round table rePresentatIve. RiDDLe is someone you
must meet and speak to, if you can get him to stand
stiLL long enough to have a conversatIon. You’ll fInd
him and the Infantry Crew holding up the wall next
to Mr. Balli’S class between periods. Do you have
something to say? Do you think you know your
Politics? Try tHem on RiDDLe and test your logIc.
He is J-L ACE’s owN plagiarism and logistics systEm,
a walking encyclopedia. In order to have passion for
philosophy one must embrace policy. RiDDLe has
done this. Don’t question it. Love it. RiDDLe and his
Infantry are open for battle. “Come test your skills
These 11th grade students have 15 credits or more and are planning on graduating in December 2012.

Juarez-Lincoln ACE, with the support of La Joya ISD, prides itself on
changing the culture of the struggling student population. Students are
able to redirect, focus, and apply themselves to their studies in our small
tight-knit community. At JL ACE our students know what it takes to
succeed and are taking advantage of this second chance at freedom. The
freedom to be among their cohort and graduate with their classmates in
order to be a productive part of a bigger community.
“Welcome to the real world, ladies and gentlemen.” Mr. Troncoso
By E. Noyola, JL ACE faculty
JL ACE understands that life has obstacles.
Thanks to La Joya ISD for proving a hand to
lift ourselves up when we stumble and fall.
Message from the Principal
La Joya ISD has always worked hard to raise the aspiration level of all our
students and to make them aware of a better way of life through education. Life is never about not having problems, but about being able to deal with the
ones we have. In life, it‟s not only what we do but what we don‟t do for
which we are accountable. Keep you aspirations high and always reach for the stars. All of you have the opportunity to attend college. Don‟t throw it
away. Go for it! A good career will give you meaning and purpose in life.
Juarez-Lincoln ACE‟s legacy is not only about getting your credits and
graduating. It‟s about developing the will to continue and never give up!
We know it‟s not that simple, but it is worth a try.
By Mario A. Troncoso, Juarez-Lincoln ACE Principal
