JIPMER Health Education Initiative, a program launched by JIPMER to improve public awareness on health and disease. Th e programme is conducted on 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of every month. Th e entry to the programme is
open to all and is free In the month of July, interactive session focusing on ‘Know Your Medicine’ was conducted on 11th July. Th e session was conducted by Dr S Manikandan & Dr Hari Venkatesh from Department of Pharmacology. Th e session was moderated by Mrs R Srividhya, Medical Social Service Wing. Th e second program of July was conducted on 25th July 2017, it was focused on increasing the awareness about Organ Donation In the month of August, session on ‘Pre- Conception, Ante Natal & Post Natal Care was conducted by faculty from Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Dietetics . Another session on ‘Cancer-Causes, Prevention and Treatment’ was conducted on 22nd August. Th ese sessions are also telecasted to all the medical colleges of South India which are under NMCN project

JIPMER recently acquired Robotic surgery system Da Vinci Xi. Faculty and support staff from various surgical and related departments have been trained in Robotic surgery. This system will facilitate performing many minimally invasive surgical procedures.
A multi-disciplinary team under the leadership of Dr Dinesh Kumar performed fi rst bilateral hand transplantation surgery. The organs were harvested from a 50 year old brain dead patient and were transplanted on to a 16 year old bilateral below elbow amputee

Plastic surgery department of JIPMER has printer. The availability of 3D printer will enable the department to provide better fi tting prosthesis to patients at a cheaper cost and reduce their dependence on external services.

In an eff ort to increase the accessibility of Healthcare to common man, JIPMER established the Telemedicine services. Newly established Casualty Telemedicine Centre, Dial JIPMER Service and ISRO Sabarimala Project were inaugurated by the Director on 11th August 2017

Department of Neonatology celebrated the World breastfeeding week with greatest vigor this year in coordination with other stakeholders (Department of Pediatrics, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the college of Nursing). The whole week was studded with various activities involving pediatricians, obstetricians, nurses, paramedical staff , medical and nursing Students, public and media focusing on the theme - SUSTAINING BREASTFEEDING TOGETHER. This year's theme celebrates working together for the common good, which produces sustainable results, greater than the sum of our individual eff orts. The Human Milk bank in JIPMER Women and Children’s Hospital – Amudham Thaippal Maiyam (ATM) is also functioning well and a number of preterm babies have been benefi tted from this milk bank.

Opening of New Girls’ and Boys’ Hostel
Inaugural Address by Director to 1st MBBS Students of JIPMER, Karaikal
The new two blocks of hostels in the Hostel Complex of JIPMER, Karaikal were opened for occupation on 3rd July, 2017, by Dr. G. K. Pal, Dean, JIPMER, Karaikal, after performing Puja along with staff and students of JIPMER Karaikal, in the early morning in these two buildings. These hostel complexes are renovated MIG and LIG quarters of Pondicherry Government. The renovation works were done by CPWD, JIPMER. The first year MBBS students started staying in these hostels from 4th July, 2017.
The first MBBS students joined JIPMER, Karaikal on 4th July, 2017. Dr. S. C. Parija, Director, JIPMER, delivered the inaugural address to the new students in a special ceremony held on 5th July, 2017, at smart lecture theatre at Arasalar Complex, JIPMER, Karaikal, in the presence of Dr. J. Balachander, Medical Superintendent, and Dr. G. K. Pal, Dean, JIPMER, Karaikal. Dr. Parija gave an inspiring talk to the students and emphasized the uniqueness of JIPMER, Karaikal, which was highly motivating to the students. In the evening, a close interactive session with parents, students and faculty of JIPMER was organized under the guidance of Dr. G. K. Pal, Dean, JIPMER, Karaikal.

Orientation Programme for 1st MBBS students at JIPMER, Karaikal
Breast Feeding Awareness Week
Orientation programme (Foundation Course) for the 1st year MBBS students was conducted from 5th July 2017 to 31st July 2017. During this month-long programme the faculty from JIPMER who took orientation classes at JIPMER Campus, also took classes at JIPMER, Karaikal. During the foundation course, PEP talks were presented by Shri R. Kesavan, I.A.S., Collector, Karaikal; and Mr. Sridhar, general Manger, Production, ONGC, Karaikal.
Breast Feeding Awareness Week was organized by Department of Paediatrics under the leadership of Dr. Sarthak Das, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, from 1st August to 7th August, 2017. Shri Kesavan, I.A.S., inaugurated Breast Feeding Awareness programme. Various programmes including public rally, health talk and competitions were organised during the week-long programme. Prizes and certificates were distributed to the participants and winners by Dr. G. K. Pal, Dean, JIPMER, Karaikal, in the Valedictory Function held on 7th August.

Independence Day Celebration at JIPMER Karaikal
Independence Day was celebrated on 15th August 2017, in great fervour, at JIPMER, Karaikal. The national flag was hoisted by Dr. S. D. Sapeco, Professor, Forensic Medicine. All students, faculty and non-faculty members attended the programme enthusiastically. Patriotic songs were recited and security staff gave the guard of Honour. A Group photo of staff and students were taken after the flag hosting.
