01 / Thesis Statement

The goals for this thesis study and the development of

the Lost Place:

To provide an open space design that is inspired by and

rooted in the past history and culture of the region.

To create a place with memories of new and old which

will foster a new sense of self esteem and identity for

the citizens of Zhengzhou.

To revisit the relationships, between culture and history,

people and culture, people and history.

To maintain a connection to the over-changing, growing network that is life, we must always be moving,

ready to see and respond and evolve. Design is truly a process of discovery.

Present

The colors show the physical boundaries of each

dynasty throughout China’s history. Henan Province

has existed since the beginning of Shang Dynasty

(1000 BCE), the first literate dynasty of China.

Chinese civilization has existed in the Henan region

since the Shang Dynasty. The presence of the Yellow

River, fertile soil and other natural resources have

contributed to the Henan region long being a center of

Chinese history and important in the development of

Chinese civilization and culture.

03 / Chinese Agriculture

Although China’s agricultural output is the largest in

the world, only about 15% of its total land area can be

cultivated. China’s arable land, which represents 10% of

the total arable land in the world, supports over 20% of

the world’s population.

east and south good for growing rice, wheat and cotton. This

05 / Yellow River

Chinese civilization, during the Neolithic era, originated

in various places along both the Yellow River and the

Yangtze River valleys. The Yellow River is said to be the

Cradle of Chinese Civilization.

Henan, a province of the People’s Republic of China,

is located in the central part of the country south of

the Yellow River. The name Henan means “south of the

Yellow River” ( “He” means river, “Nan” means south).

The provincial capital city of Zhengzhou is also located

to the south of the Yellow River.

THE YELLOW RIVER AS DEPICTED IN A QING DYNASTY ILLUSTRATED MAP (SECTIONS)

On 9 June 1938, during the Second

Sino-Japanese War, Nationalist troops

under Chiang Kai-Shek, near the village

of Huayuankou in Henan, broke the

levees holding back the Yellow River.

The goal of the operation was to stop

the advancing Japanese troops by

following a strategy of "using water as a

substitute for soldiers" (yishui daibing).

The 1938 flood of an area covering

20,800 sq mi took some 500,000 to

900,000 Chinese lives, along with an

unknown number of Japanese soldiers.

The flood prevented the Japanese Army

from taking Zhengzhou, on the southern

bank of the Yellow River. This did not

stop the Japanese from achieving their

goal of capturing Wuhan, the temporary

seat of the Chinese government located

The region of eastern China that is favorable to large

populations is called China Proper. River basins

historically produce abundant food, which in turn leads

to concentrated populations.

CHINA TOPOGRAPHY

China has two main physical features. China is a

mountainous country. Hills; mountains and plateaus

cover two-thirds of the country's total area. The

other feature is that the land surface of China slopes

down from west to east in a three-step staircase.

EXISTING Currently, a major road, Zhongyuan road, bisects the two main areas of the project area. The design intent is to connect the two areas. Therefore an underground tunnel is proposed.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CONSTRAINTS

1. City Hall is not allowed the people who

are not work in government come in.

2. The areas surrounding the Lost Place

site area are dense residential districts.

3. The museum and public library are lo-cated in the Civic Center. There is no pub-lic open space provided. 4. No access to Bishagang park from east of neighborhood.

Both of theses open spaces have the po-tential to be developed to better serve the needs of the surrounding neighborhoods.

To develop a green system coming across from Bishagang Park to Green City Plaza is an opportunity to enhance the entire city’s green structure.
