THIS WEEK Our meeting this week was at the Corning Area Youth Center.

Jim Hudson entertained us from a portable keyboard while President-Elect Michele collected contributions for CAYC in lieu of lunch tickets. After members turned like spinning tops to face Old Glory for the Pledge of allegiance, Susan O’Leary gave the invocation. A card was circulated for Judy Cross Mancini. Dick Perry announced that long time member Bill Bigler was now established in an assisted living facility near Boston, close to his children. LUNCH

Michele Mayer, Youth Services Director, explained to the members present that lunch would be served to their guests in the same manner as supper is served to an average of 34 kids each weeknight. First was a sign-in sheet (age not required!), then chicken, potatoes, drinks and a roll were served to us by CAYC and Family Service Society directors, followed

by a salad bar. To get dessert, students need to have their plates inspected by a staff member, then they deliver the waste to a bin, and the tray to the dishwasher. Diners are called up by table -- the first table being the quietest one, an honor given to Lloyd Young’s table. GUESTS

Christy Kager asked members to introduce their guests. Floyd English treated Carol this week, and Ted Goldwyn had two guests, Melanie Owens, and Marc Shuart. Peter Maier introduced Judith Schneider, (née Grottjohan), her husband, Norbert, and her two children. Judith spoke briefly to our members.

In 1999, Judith spent a year with us as an Exchange Student. In Corning, she lived with Cathy Caine first, then with the Charletons, who have moved to Pittsburgh, and lastly with the Maiers before setting off on the summer tour west and returning to Germany. She is now married to Norbert Schneider, has two children, Leni (3) and Emma (5 months) and they live in a suburb of Heidelberg. Judith is an architect, now on maternity leave (a full year!) with her second child. Norbert has his doctor

of mechanical engineering and is working with a university in Darmstadt on an industrial project. On this visit to America, they are spending a week in Corning, and a week in Pittsburgh. NEW MEMBER

Theodore Goldwyn came forward

with Melanie Owens to introduce her as our Club’s newest member. Melanie has recently joined the Credit Union as Business Development Manager. Previously she was in

Customer Service with the Marriott Corp. Melanie is married to Joel, and they have two children. She observed that it had taken from 1905 to the late ‘80’s for women to be admitted to Rotary, and it was her understanding that now the women members were doing much of the work in the Club. In honor of the women of Rotary, she made a donation to the Club. MEMBER ANNOUNCEMENTS Dick Perry promoted an upcoming Concert by “two of the best musicians in the area.” Sorry, Jim. The Blair Bigler Concert will be at the First Congregational Church, W. Pulteney St, on Sunday May 5 at 3pm. It was pointed out that Dick Perry is celebrating 40 years of association with the Congregational Church in Corning.

Several members contributed details to the upcoming Memorial Service for Ed Mancini. The Funeral Mass will be at St Mary’s on Friday May 3rd at 10:30. There are to be no calling hours, but Judy Cross will be at the Church from 10.00am. Wendy Winnett proposed that Rotarians, wearing Badges/pins, form up in two lines at the Church Door as other mourners arrive, in honor of Ed. Following the service, internment will be at the Mausoleum at St. Mary’s Cemetery. All members of the Club are invited to attend a luncheon at the Corning Country Club. An E-vite invitation will be sent to all members. Please respond, so that an accurate count can be provided.

Charlie Hess thanked Susan O’Leary for her grace and faithfulness. Ed Mancini was also on the Grace and Prayer committee, so there are now some vacancies for anyone moved to assist with invocations. With the list we now

have, the duty rotates only once or twice per year.

Don Creath observed that Memorial Day was coming up, and he has 900 un-engraved bricks for the Veteran’s Memorial. If there is a veteran you wish to memorialize, please go to our Club website, and click the button for “Brochure and Order Form”. JULIEN’S TIME

Last weekend Julien watched his first baseball game, and enjoyed pizza afterwards. This week, he played tennis on three consecutive days, winning each time.

PRESIDENT’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Barry read a letter from the Radisson Hotel, noting that this week is National Volunteer Week, and in recognition of this, the Hotel would donate back 50% of the lunch receipts from next week’s meeting at the Hotel. Pres. Barry recalled that the District Assembly was now past, and called on President-Elect Michele to report. Michele’s main impression was of the 5:30 am

departure needed to reach Shortsville, NY in time for the 7:30 am start. At the Assembly, Brian McConnell was recognized for his election as an Ass’t. District Governor for the 2013/14 year. Brian donated $5 to Camp Star to honor National Volunteer Week. Dick Pope was recognized as a prolific recruiter of new members. Barry reminded members of the Catholic Charities Walk coming up on Saturday, April 27th at 10:00 am. at Centerway Square. The Prez pulled out an old newspaper showing Ted Goldwyn in a funny hat, and enquired about the Jewish Food festival in Elmira. Ted responded that the Festival was a great success, as always, and the food was excellent, and negotiated a $3 fine. PROGRAM

Michele Mayer started the program by introducing the FSS and Youth Center board members and staff who had served our lunch today. These included Joan Cates, Robin Foster, Mike Gabrielli, Steve Sorensen, Bev Card, Nancy Gottwald, Tricia Shirey and Emily Roe. Michelle pointed out the storage lockers/benches, the three computers, and the Food Prep Island in the

kitchen that they acquired a couple of years ago with a grant from the Club’s Sustaining Fund. Money well spent. Emily then took over with a description of the services provided by the Youth center. The Center is a free drop-in resource for children 8 to 18 years old. Clients come from Home-School families, C-PP, also Addison and Campbell School Districts. The Centre is open from 2:30 to 7:30 pm, and serves a snack, dinner around 5 pm, and a nutritious snack before closing. From Monday to Thursday, homework time is from arrival to 3:30. On Tuesday and Thursday, teen night extends from 7 – 9pm. Other activities include art, outside play/work, community service projects such as pillow cases for Golisano Children’s Hospital, shoveling and raking at Founder’s Pavilion, Food Bank Parking Lot, and painting the back of Connor’s building on Market St. Thank you, Barry. Students accumulate stars on a star board, which are tallied up to determine eligibility for field trips, the major one of which is a late Summer trip to Seabreeze in Rochester. All children read and sign off on a Rules and Consequences document, and sign in and out. Only one sign in per day is allowed. Michele Reports

In 2012, 274 different children were served with 9000 visits, averaging 38 per day, and 2917 snacks and meals were served. Michelle then conducted an active Q & A session noting that many kids are in from open to close, both parents working, and for many, CAYC is the next safest place outside school. For some, there is no food at home. Dick Perry asked about occasional users. The Center is not usually a drop off for parents wanting a baby sitter. Robin Foster addressed funding, which comes from some State and County money, many small grants from U.W., service organizations, individual donors, food donations from Wegmans. The main Fundraiser is the Snowball Ball.

Peter Maier asked Michelle about the second floor. A large room is rented out as a Dance Studio, and also is home to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. The rest is crowded with offices for the Family Service Society, DSS, and other related functions. Dick Puccio asked about field trips in addition to Seabreeze. Several other trips are organized, depending on funds available. A popular trip is to the Van Fleet Farm on West Hill. Others have been to the Jackals and the Pioneers, movie visits, and swimming in Stewart Park. Elise asked how transportation is arranged – a school bus is contracted for field trips. The CAYC cannot

transport any children. Day to day most kids walk home, or are picked up by parents. If a kid is not picked up, the Police Dept is called. 50/50 Bill Plummer's table was noisiest, and went last through the line, but won the 50/50. Again… Winnings were $10.00. The pot is at $162 Photos Remmulp DMP
