Abstract: The Spanish modal adverb quizá(s) is often translated to tabun in Japanese, and many grammars for learners of Spanish use tabun when introducing “adverbs of doubt”, which invariably include quizá(s). However, our impression is that tabun expresses too high a degree of probability to properly translate quizá(s). To dissuade our students from using tabun, we conducted two informal questionnaire surveys, aimed at gathering data on impressions that Spanish and Japanese speakers get of the probabilities shown in sentences containing quizá(s) and tabun, respectively in their own language. The comparison of the results confirms our supposition and shows that tabun is not a right word to translate quizá(s). The results also give suggestions for further studies of Spanish “adverbs of doubt”. y6 Keywords: modal adverbs, mood, Spanish, Japanese

1 Abstract: This article discusses Urdu, including Hindi, which should be considered as a social variant of the former from the viewpoint of linguistics. The negation, adjective and adjoint modification in Urdu are discussed through the sample sentences. Through the analysis of the sample sentences involving noun modification, it could be said that the participle “wālā” is worth further investigation. k}z}r; ;
