    Welcome to JIBS!

    Dear fellow JIBSers,

Whether youre a new student here at Jnkping International Business School or if youve

been here for some time I know that you are, as I am, thrilled at the start of the new

semester. New possibilities and prospects lie ahead, and the days just keep getting lighter,

brighter and longer for each passing hour.

In myrst months at JIBS Ive only had time to scratch the surface of all the brilliance and

gusto of the students, faculty and members of stahere. What I can say though is that the

students make out an important part of the incredible JIBS spirit. You are our best

ambassadors in the ever-changing global market. You make us look good. No, scratch that,

you make us look great. I hope we make you look great too!

So let me take this opportunity to welcome you all to the new semester at JIBS.

My advice to you is that you take all opportunities that are given this semester:

International Day, Spring Inspiration, and JIBS Video Contest and what JSA oers you to

mention just a few activities. Participate, explore and be truly international at heart and

    entrepreneurial in mind.

I know Im ready are you?

f you passed through the entranceof JIBS on February 16, many things

    would have

lled up your senses.People speaking and shaking hands.Small goodie bags oating around inmasses of people. Red bow ties that

go around the necks of all members of Next-step. Students and companies making smalltalk and discussing future aspects and goals.Business cards and e-mail addresses goingfrom one hand to another. Opportunities ofa summer internship or an interview oered, and both students and employers smiling as aconversation goes in a direction as they bothhave hoped for.

Nextstep Career FairNextstep Career Fair is one of the biggestevents of the year at JIBS. e Career Fairtakes approximately four months of pre-parations, says Anne Mathieu, one of the25 members of the Nextstep team.ose

preparations include everything from makingagreements with companies, to blowing up

balloons on the same day as the fair. It is achance for students to make new contacts andmaybe meet their future employer. Compa-nies come to attend the fair to meet studentsand market their company and their view onthe future job market. It is a great way to talkwith companies and enter the labor market in asafe and early stage, says Mathieu.

omas BodstrmStudents who attendedthe fair were givengoodie bags from companies that containeditems from that company. Nextstep alsohanded out goodie bags from companies that

could not be present that day. During the daythere were three guest lectures students couldattend, and one of the biggest names that daywas omas Bodstrm. omas Bodstrmattracted a lot of people and he was one of themost popular topics of the conversations that

day, says Mathieu. Bodstrm had around 250people attending his lecture.

e Career Fair BanquetAnother very popular topic to discuss at theCareer Fair was the banquet later that eve-ning.e Banquet took place at Elite StoraHotellet in Jnkping. It was a chance for the

students to have a lovely evening and at thesame time build new contacts with possibleprospective employers.e interest in thebanquet was very big and quickly sold out.On the evening of the banquet, the dining hall

in Elite Stora Hotellet was exquisitely ador-ned. e crystal chandeliers sparkled and sodid all the dresses in the room, says Mathieu.

A successfull BanquetEvery person attending was given a glassof champagne when entering the hall andthe Banquet was very glamorous. Mathieu

ends with describing the Banquet as a verysuccessful event that came to end a verypleasant day. When I thank Mathieu for her time andwalk through the corridor, I can still see

Nextsteps goodie bags carried around bystudents. It seems that Nextstep successfullyachieved all of their goals with the CareerFair, both by providing an excellent fair andby making a mark in this years JIBS historyof events.

18 years later JIBS is by far the most internationalbusiness school in Sweden and one of the mostinternational in Europe, even the world depen-ding on measures. Not bad for a business schoolthat has not turned 20, yet.

We have ve yearsWhen I became JIBS Alumni president in 2009I thought, Ok, we have ve years to do this. Tonish building the platform of a proper socialprofessional network of former JIBS graduatesand to gather the 5 000+ people with a JIBSdegree and the other thousands that spent timeat JIBS. I wanted to do this well in time for the

20th anniversary of JIBS in 2014. Why? Becauseto everyone at JIBS, students, faculty, staoralumni, our 20th anniversary marks one ofthe best opportunities in modern time to trulystrengthen the perception and experience of JIBSbeing a rst class business school. One that isrecognized for being truly international at heartand entrepreneurial in mind. Our opportunityis to tell more people around us what we standfor and by that attract more of the high calibrestudents, faculty, staand partners that we want.It also marks the best opportunity in years to reu-nite the family of JIBSers around the world.isideal opportunity should not go to waste because

the next one is much to far away.

Exceptional anniversaryAs for JIBS Alumni, we will do our part. Firstof all, we will continue to build a high value-adnetwork that inspires, connects, educates. We willhelp to come up with the exceptional ideas onwhat to do. Because an exceptional anniversaryneeds exceptional ideas and we should reach outto all students, faculty, staand fellow alumni tounleash their creativity and engagement. Just asone of many references, when Harvard Universitycelebrated its 375th anniversary in 2011, theydid a year long series of programs, a new photo

book, a mobile application and a Harvard Storieswebsite, just to mention some parts. StockholmSchool of Economics too celebrated its 100thbirthday recently with great ambitions. Our cele-brations are no less important to us.

Less than 800 days to goSo how should we celebrate ouranniversary? I would sug-gest we do it our way andin a way that reunites theJIBSers and mark JIBS astruly international andentrepreneurial businessschool. But we better getstarted. By the time youread this it will be lessthan 800 days to JIBS20th birthday. Lets makeit the happening of the

    century at JIBS!

    he time for National Model

    United Nations Conference

    (NMUN) has arrived. e

NMUN is a simulation of the

    work of the United Nations.

    Every spring this conference

takes place in New York and attracts over

5000 students from dierent corners of the

    world to discuss global issues.

Short history of NMUNe National Model United Conference

traces back to 1923, though the current

format of the program was adopted in 1946

when the United Nations was created. Global

wars and a severe economic situation gave

rise for institutional and legal developments

for an increasingly interdependent world. UN

provided a forum for the nations to discuss

    international actions.e main concerns were

the fundamental nature of human rights, the

maintenance and respect for internationaltreaties, equality of individuals, and a better

standard of living, amongst other things.

ese historical events shaped the world we

live in, and though today we live in a more

    sophisticated environment, there are still

political, economic, and social issues. NMUN

is aware that students today face these chal-

lenges, and gives them an opportunity to taste

    the complexity of international aairs.

    e Conference

e NMUN program provides studentswith hands-on learning, addressing global

issues in a real-world context. Participa-

ting universities from UN countries send

delegations to NMUN to discuss current

global issues on twenty selected committees,

and each university is assigned a particular

country to represent. e interesting fact is

that the assigned country is dierent from the

home country of the university. In 2011, JIBS

students represented Finland and this year

JIBS students are going to represent Malaysia.

As a result, participants learn more about

other countries, develop compromise and dip-lomacy skills, and gain a better understanding

of the inner working of UN.

e Journey to NMUN:New YorkBegins at JIBSe conference in New York is the nal de-

stination of the NMUN course taught at JIBS.

e course consists of two parts and amounts

to 15 credits. Before arriving to the conferen-

ce, students have to complete this course and

go through a great deal of preparations.e

course teaches what it means to be a diplomat, how to write political papers, and how to

    debate and negotiate.

is year, on April 3-7, the delegation of 18

JIBS students will be present at the NMUN

    conference. Aer successfully completing

the rst part of the course, they have been

working in pairs for their chosen departmentscommittee.ere are ve departments within

    their respective committees: the General

Assembly, the Economic and Social Council,

    Inter-Governmental Organizations, Peace and

    Security, Specialized Agencies, Programmes,

and Funds. Each committee was assigned

three topics to discuss, related to the political,

economic, and social concerns of Malaysia.

    During March, committees were preparing

    the papers representing Malaysias position.

Before the students arrival to New York, these

papers were sent to the NMUN conference.

New York from a Dierent Per-spective

Once in New York, the JIBS delegation will

settle down in the Marriott Marquis Hotel,

which becomes both their home and work

place. During the conference week, partici-

pants have an opportunity to broaden theirnetworks. Delegations visit embassies of the

countries they represent, work with other

    participants with diverse backgrounds, and

also have a chance to meet UN ocials. e

culmination of the NMUN program is the

nal conference held at the UN headquarters.

    Last year, Jnkpings delegation returned

home with two awards: Honorable Men-

    tion Delegation and Outstanding Position

Paper. ere is no doubt that experience is

the best reward from the NMUN conference.

Nevertheless, this year on the behalf of JIBSUnited Committee, we would like to wish

them good luck and to return home with

    more awards!

Recap on events for JIBS Alumni:

    RECENT AND UPCOMING

JIBS Alumni combined forces with VW

    Showroom and together kicked-oyear

2012. We gathered at VW Showroom in

Stockholm to celebrate the new beginning,

mingle and hear what Henrik Magnusson,

working at VW, has to say about e SecretsBehind Creating Customer Value. During

the evening, we also held extra elections of 3

new members to the Board of JIBS Alumni

    Association. JIBS Alumni Association Board

now consists of 11 team members, of which

    Marcus Hedman (Head of Communication),

Fredrik Upker (Head of Treasury) and

Mikael Klaar (Vice Head of Treasury) are the

newly elected members (see the complete

team and read their stories at

    www.jibsalumni.se).

VW has established an exciting prize aweekend with the new VW Beetle. We

    congratulate Tobias Brinck (graduate of

    Arsjuristprogrammet, 2007-2010), now

pursuing master studies at JIBS and working

at Deloitte, who has gotten a chance to take

this nice car for a ride. We have met with

Tobias to talk about his weekend experiences

    and JIBS Alumni network.

Suggestions of what to do with a 200 horse

power Beetle with 19 inch rims were many. Finally, it was decided that me and my friends

were going on a road trip to the capital ofy

cars, Malm. e 200 horse powers made

our road trip something extra, but of course

always within the speed limits... We have

explored all the well-known places in Malm,

    Rasmusgatan, Rosengrd, Turning Torso and

of course Zlatans house (which the day aer

was put on sale, coincidence?). We rounded

the day oby exploring new territories, a late

lunch in Trellborg, we thought we owed it to

the population of Skne to show the Beetle to

I found out that there are tons of dierent

car brands within their group. Also, the role of

VW Showroom, how VW uses it for mar-

keting and customer experience, and which

target group they are aiming at things I didnot know earlier.

    er over two decades of

    travelling around the globe

and working at a large frac-

    tion of the worlds leading

    business schools, Johan

    Roos has now landed at

    JIBS. His academic career

stretches from a masters degree in Agricul-

tural Economics to a PhD in International Bu-

siness, and in addition to this he has worked

professionally as an adviser and consultant in

a wide range of industries. To state that Johan

has an interesting and diverse background is

    to say the least.

Dr. Johan Roos earned his PhD in Inter-

national Business from Stockholm School of

Economics. At the end of his studies Johan

was oered to work as a researcher at the

William H. Wurster Center for Multinational

Management Studies at Wharton School,University of Pennsylvania, where he nalized

his doctoral research on strategic alliances,

and pursued post-doc studies. From then

on, Johan has served as faculty member of

the Norwegian School of Management (BI)

in Oslo, International Institute for Manage-

ment Development (IMD) in Lausanne and

at Stockholm School of Economics. Before

returning to his native Sweden, for six years,

Johan was the Managing Director of Imagi-

nation Lab Foundation, a non-prot Swiss

research organization that he established, where he remains on the Board. At his latest

stop he served as President for Copenhagen

    Business School.

When speaking with Johan, his strikingly

    outgoing personality certainly explains why

he has been prominent at so many schools. Jo-

han explains how his curious mindset clearly

aligns with his accomplishments within his

research and career and why it is a motivating

factor to work hard, Curiosity for me is a dri-

ver to see more and learn more. I always want

JIBS as a school has a young mentality, vitality, aspiration, and baldness that I like,

and that is also what dierentiates it from other

schools. Just as younger people tend to be curi-

ous, this relatively young school is driven by its

curiosity. Ive observed JIBS from its inception,

and it has always been on my landscape.I have

just followed the development of the school

from a distance and with great admiration.

Banging during lectures, shakingtables at Taste of Beirut, constructionworkers on campus what started outas basic road construction in the end of last

year has by now developed into a large-scale

construction site outside of JIBS. Financedby Jnkping Municipality, the previous road

construction came as a necessary step creating

    space and enabling further construction

activities which are now in full eect. Since

a couple of weeks it is plain to see that the

ongoing development next to JIBS is not only

aecting the business school, but will also

change the face of the campus. e beginning

    of construction marked the commencement

of a development process which had been in

    the making for several years.

e current construction site next to JIBS

will eventually emerge as a bridge linkingboth sides of campus currently divided by

Munksjgatan. At a width of 9 meters, it will

be spanning the street indicating the rst

milestone of the overall construction project

by its completion in September 2012. Besides

simply bridging the street, the overpass will

provide the opportunity to reach the main

building block of the current construction

    eorts: Friskvrdsanlggningen, the new Jn-

kping University sports center which will be

located next to the School of Health Sciences.

e building of the new sports center de-notes the implementation of a long-standing

proposal, replacing Idrottshuset which is cur-

rently rented by the School of Education and

Communication for the purpose of holding

physical education courses. While plans at

some point mapped the construction of a

2500 seat arena capable of televising major

sports events, a nal decision was made upon

building a two story sports center holding

250 seats for spectators and comprising an

underground parking lot. With a total areaof 4000 m, Friskvrdsanlggningen will not

only provide space for educational purpo-

ses but moreover include a gym. Located

on the 1st oor, it will oer an equipped

gym area as well as an aerobics zone and a

spinning area. While dierent tenants such

as Friskis&Svettis, Atlantis and Sportlife are

currently up for debate, a nal decision about

which operator the gym will be contracted out

to ought to be reached by May. Additionally,

sports activities organized by JSA as well as

events such as Nextstep growing in size and

signicance throughout the last years can beheld at Friskvrdsanlggningen in the future.

e development is part of the overarching

project Living Campus which aims to keep

campus lively during aernoons and evenings,

even at times when there are no lectures.

e vision is to not only attract students and

academic sta, but to also draw in residents

of the area with dierent oerings such as the

    gym.

In the long term, the currently industrially

used area between Mariedalsparken and Torg

alongside Munksjn is supposed to be subjectof enhancement through further develop-

ment. As currently planned, the district will

expand its living space to a capacity of more

than 1000 residents and create oce space for

various small and medium sized companies.

    Moreover, next to Friskvrdsanlggningen,

a new student accommodation will sprout

along the shoreline of Munksjn, creating the

rst student accommodation in the closest

proximity to campus. Further, a new research

building is planned to be built opposite of theSchool of Health Sciences, providing space

    for research across Jnkping Universitys

    faculties.

While some of the noisiest parts of the cur-

rent construction phase are said to be already

completed, much of the potentially distracting

work is scheduled to be carried out during

summer break. us, the further construc-

tion will not have an impact on teaching and

research activity at JIBS. e overall construc-

tion of the SEK 82m project Friskvrdsanlgg-

ningen is planned to be completed in August

2013. It is contracted out to NCC, one ofScandinavias largest construction companies,

previously involved in projects such as the

Turning Torso in Malm or the resund tun-

nel. Funded by HF AB, the company owning

all buildings on campus, Jnkping University

will be a tenant of the sports center. Students

commencing their academic life during the

fall semester of 2013 will be able to enjoy the

new and exciting oerings from day one.

On February 6, 2012, the winners of

    JIBS rst Entrepreneurship Chal-

    lenge were announced.e three

business ideas vying for the top spot and

50 000 SEK prize were: Henri Valvanne from

Finland, with his ideas on helping young

people to get social and psychological help

online; Natallia Pisavera from Belarus for herconcept on how to create a broader audience

for classical music events; and Vassil Afzali

from Bulgaria, for his design on further deve-

    loping automatic door technology.

e Entrepreneurship Challenge is open to

all program students. To help the individuals

further develop their business ideas, rst,

second, and third place in the contest received

    cash prizes of 50 000, 30 000, and 20 000 SEK

respectively. e prize money was provided by

a generous donation from Lennaert Israelsson

in the beginning of 2010, given to JIBS to sup-

port students entrepreneurial activities. We thought this would be a good way to

help students with a good business idea to

start their own business, says Wictoria

Millberg, Director of Marketing at JIBS.

e prize ceremony on February 6 also

coincided with the birthday of the donor,

Lennaert Israelsson, with the rst prize being

awarded to Henri Valvanne for his idea of

using the internet to connect therapists with

    youth in need of psychotherapy.

An experience Henri had with an illness

of his own fueled his want to help people,

and he realized that the internet was beingunderutilized for therapy purposes, and thus

the business idea of @Care was born. Henri,

together with a group of fellow students, have

blems by oering a low-cost, easily accessible,

and fast psychotherapy service through the

internet. is involves gathering a network

of therapists to provide this service via Skype

to all people in need, funded by adults paying

a full price for services and youth receiving

care at a heavily discounted, or even free, rate.

Other revenues could come from membership

fees, or commission for face-to-face sessions,

as the idea to also use the online booking for

regular, in-person sessions at the therapists

    oce is developed.

For many young people, mental healthcare

is not easily accessible. e costs of care are

high, and the fear of being labeled with men-

tal problems causes many to not seek much

needed help. Very few companies provide

online therapy, but it is convenient, aordable,

and easily accessible. Henris prize money will

be used to set up the company, and he expres-

ses his gratefulness to Leannaert Israelsson

for his donation, as well as to JIBS for makingthe Entrepreneurship Challenge possible. He

hopes to see some results in the business set-

up by the end of spring, 2012.

As Louis Pasteur said, Chance favors the

prepared mindso students, be ready to

write down your ashes of inspiration. See a

need, or experience one yourself, and gure

out a way to fulll it. Next years Entrepre-

neurship Challenge could be won by your

    idea. JIBS commitment to entrepreneurship

is an asset to be taken advantage of by all

    students.
