With such responsibility, we welcome new security measures to our school. As many of you have seen, our Attendance area has undergone a change over the summer. With the implementation of a secure corridor at our main front entrance, students, staff and visitors can soon expect a new procedure before entering the building during the school day. The secure corridor will include a buzz-in system that allows exterior doors to be locked during the school day. Our main entrance will be equipped with an intercom system to allow students and visitors to speak with an office receptionist, who will unlock the door, or “buzz” them into the building. Upon entering the building, students and visitors can speak to a staff member in our Attendance office for assistance. Although this procedure may take each of us a few extra steps, it will greatly increase the school’s ability to monitor who is allowed access to the halls and rooms occupied by our children. In addition to our new buzz in system, new security doors will be installed outside our Attendance office as part of the secure corridor. This additional safeguard is part of a PCS safety initiative with expected completion within the first few weeks of school. Combined with the Raptor Identification System that was implemented during last school year, PCS and JHR are continuously reviewing and improving our efforts to maintain the type of safe school that our students and staff expect and deserve. Another change in store for the 2018-2019 school year, is the inauguration of our REFRESH program. While JHR students have benefited from our SMART Block program for many years, our students will now have the unique privilege of experiencing REFRESH. While the two programs have some similarities, REFRESH will offer our students more opportunities to build and strengthen the academic, social and life skills needed for a world beyond JHR. While REFRESH will make it possible for students to get the support they need in their classes during the school day, it will also provide opportunities for growth and advancement, as well as simple fun and enjoyment in areas the students choose to participate. With REFRESH students will utilize an online system to select such opportunities. This system provides our school staff the accountability needed to provide a safe environment during REFRESH. As always JHR continues to lead the way in combining education with innovation and creativity to provide the best high school experience possible for our students. Thank you for your continued partnership and entrusting your child and their education with us. We will continue to keep you abreast of the changes as they take effect. #WeRiseByLiftingOthers
