Screendance provides an experimental ground for choreographers and dancers to play with new ideas. That’s what we have witnessed over the past 10 years, since the inception of Jumping Frames – diverse and distinctive styles of artistic expression, be it themes, movement styles, exploration of sites and technology, that had developed through dance film commissions. We are excited to collaborate continually with artists keen on exploring dance through different means: from film productions and video design for stage productions, to promotional trailers and stage documentaries. Their experiences have contributed to a greater success for their works, creating works that receive much acclaim from their peers.
From this year, Jumping Frames turns its focus on the consolidation of artistic experience in the production of dance films and the international exchange of ideas. CCDC has received new funding from the Home Affairs Bureau, which enable us to take a leap forward, to further develop screendance and pursue a more mature way of commissioning for artists, one of such programme is the “New Works Forum: Screendance”, co-presented with West Kowloon Cultural District Authority. We invited 20 most dynamic Asian screendance makers to share their experiences, investigate new creations and explore new methodologies, culminating in the presentation on 13th August.
In this edition, we are presenting two new commissioned works, including the opening presentation A Dance Movie: In Search of the Grand View Garden by CCDC Artistic Director Willy Tsao and Body Watch by choreographer Frankie Ho and director Ziv Chun. Tsao tries to turn dance into the main body of a movie and Ho and Chun’s work is shown in Shorts I.
Jumping Frames also connects with dance video festival partners to select the first-round of video clips and documentaries, turning the lens on contemporary dance, ballet, tap, tango, Flamenco and men’s rhythmic gymnastics. In addition, dramatic movies with exceptional movement designs are chosen, such as Playtime by legendary French director Jacques Tati and 3-Iron by Korean director Kim Ki Duk, widening the horizons of screendance.
Other than action on screen, we will also have action on stage: Hook Dance Theatre by Frankie Ho and the R & T tap dance performance by the local professional tap ensemble are pre-screening plus programmes not to be missed.
We would like to express our gratitude to all the artists and festival partners. We hope you will enjoy the festival!

The film journeys with 15 young travellers who board on an extraordinary junk boat in search of their identity. Enchanted by the beautiful surroundings, they drink and recite poetry, sing and dance, assuming the roles of the imaginary characters in Dream of the Red Chamber. Intersperses with distinctive Hong Kong locations, the film merges modern dance with everyday life accompanied by pingtan, a form of classical Chinese storytelling and ballad singing, blending traditional with modern, classical with contemporary.

Czech choreograper Jirí Kylián has been living and working in the Netherlands since 1968. It is difficult to imagine the world of international modern dance without him. In 2013 he bade farewell to Nederlands Dans Theater with the restaging of his best-known choreographies: Vanishing Twin, Tar and Feathers and Claude Pascal. Film crews follow this remarkable project from the very first preparations and rehearsals right through to the final performance: Kylián stands onstage, waving to his audience for the very last time.

A film based on an incredible true story. Desert Dancer is a classic hero story about brave young people risking their lives to rebel against their government and fight for their dreams. Set in Iran, where it is currently forbidden to dance, the story follows Afshin Ghaffarian and his friends, who despite the dangers form an underground dance company, where they learn – via hacking into YouTube – from the very best: Michael Jackson, Pina Bausch, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev. Revelling in the freedom of expression that dance gives them, they set upon putting on a performance deep in the desert, away from the watchful eyes of the military police.

Mysterious drifter Tae-suk enters other people’s lives as easily as he breaks into their unoccupied homes. He repays his hosts’ unknowing hospitality by fixing broken items and cleaning up. He discovers a beautiful, lonely wife named Sun-hwa, trapped in a loveless marriage. Without saying a word, the pair begins an erotic game of cat-and-mouse, until her abusive husband returns home, unleashing a shocking burst of violence. Tae-suk defends Sun-hwa and they run away together finding domestic bliss inhabiting strangers’ homes. Later, when Tae-suk is framed for a murder, even prison walls can’t keep them apart for good. The simple and slow body movements under the camera are like the first horizon, expressing the rhythm of the everyday in a whole new way.

睇體 Body Watch 香港 HK | 2015 | 16’ | HD導演 Directors: 秦紹良 Ziv Chun, 何靜茹 Frankie Ho編舞 Choreographer: 何靜茹 Frankie Ho
Choreographer Frankie Ho and Director Ziv Chun play on the misunderstanding between men and women with dance images. Are you looking at me? Am I looking at you? Are we looking at each other with temptation? Is there any difference between the images that I want you to see and those in your eyes? We are like a coin, which always has two sides – I think you’re so great, and you think I’m great – hoping to get the answer in misunderstanding when looking at each other. One table and two chairs are placed in infinite darkness where illusions of sex and emotions are turned upside down. Nevertheless, the world is there, it can’t not be there.

Director Jukka Rajala-Granstubb met Flamenco choreographer & dancer Abraham Lezama Juarez three years ago when they talked about making a film together. Juarez lives in Reynosa, Mexico, one of the most dangerous cities because of gangs and drugs. Flamenco is his escape. Memories of lost love travel like the dust of his homeland. This is Granstubb’s moving painting of Abraham Lezama Juarez.

嗜血戀人 Vampire’s Love香港 HK | 2014 | 13’ | HD導演 Director: 蔡潔鈴 Charlie Choi 編舞 Choreographer: 何華超 Tony Ho
Actions unfold at nightfall, a couple meets at the underground psychedelic bar Tango De Passion. As the relationship morphs from love to hatred, passion turns into a dangerous liaison with murderous intent. When affections run dry, lovers tear each other apart like animals in a coliseum. They keep on “hunting” for new prey – new lover. Trapped in this cycle of lust and desire, he says: “We can’t live without love. We hurt someone and have someone new. There are no bounds to the fickleness of desire... but loneliness is immortal.”
整整.礦化 SALT挪威 NO | 2014 | 12’ | HD導演/編舞 Director/Choreographer: 瑪利亞.諾 Maria Lloyd
SALT is an international collaboration between British, Polish and Norwegian artists and producers, mixing stop motion, puppetry, live action and dance. The movie is shot in the amazing underground world of the salt mines of Wieliczka outside Krakow in Poland. A girl grows up in a sandcastle. Her parents are slowly crystallising into salt. The world is beautiful when she is little, but as a teenager she herself starts to crystallise. She has to find her own way of being and starts a journey away from the castle and into new territories. The film explores the classic theme of creating your own path in life.
季候鳥 Zugvögel 荷蘭 NL | 2009 | 21’ | HD 導演 Director: 波域斯.派福高倫 Boris Paval Conen編舞 Choreographer: 尤里.季利安 Jirí Kylián
The dance film Zugvögel (migrating birds) is part of a multi-disciplinary project choreographed by the internationally renowned choreography Jirí Kylián. Zugvögel was recorded on location in The Netherlands and in Germany. Choreographer and director play on their magical vision on migrating birds. With only two performers – one old and one young, the hyper-real settings and multilayered imagery mixes ballet with contemporary dance, exploring the rootlessness of those far away from their homelands.
Dr Vega has a new patient: Diego. It seems he never leaves the room. The only thing he does is painting and pinning things to the walls, making fantastic worlds out of the one he lives in.
An original cinema-dance experience, winner of the 2006 Spain National Prize of Dance, the film is choreographed by Chevi, with orchestrations by the winner of the Queen Sophia Prize of Musical Composition, Eneko Vadillo, and produced by the audiovisual creative group Filmo.

2015年荷蘭辛丹舞蹈影像節「觀眾之選」獎 Cinedans Audience Award for Best Dance Film 2015
Lay Me Low opens a communal space of experience through mourning by bringing people together in song and movement: individual voices are woven together to make one song, steps are taken in rhythm to make one walk. Lay Me Low is a traditional Shaker song performed by 10 dancers, musicians and singers. It cuts right to the heart to communicate a universal feeling of loss while evoking a paradoxical sense of intimacy.

Platform 13 tells the tragic comic story of a Japanese train conductor. His powerful and graceful moves control the largest trains and crowds. Suddenly he ends up in a nightmare: a strange new world where his signals lose their power. Meticulously realised by Klaus, this moving tale is a visual feast to be savoured.

“Dance is actually a way to express your understanding of the world and of life – this moves me and rocks me,” said Zhang Xiaoxiong. Soul Through a Step is a metonymy describing people who chase and realise their dreams – the dream called “dance” which is followed by dance-fanatics. Renowned director of photography Jesse Clockwork and Director Anna Yang travelled to Guangzhou and Hong Kong to visit choreographers including Willy Tsao and Zhang Xiaoxiong and produced a deep and delicate work exploring the inner world of choreographers.

Jacques Tati thrusts the lovably old-fashioned Monsieur Hulot – played by Tati himself – along with a host of other lost souls, into a baffling modern Paris. Caught in the American tourist invasion, Hulot causes chaos in his usual manner whilst Tati takes every inch of the superwide 70mm frame crammed with hilarity and inventiveness. The gloriously choreographed and nearly wordless comedy masterfully illustrates a modern era tiptoeing on the brink of oblivion. This revised edition maintains the original’s unique humour and includes additional sound effects and scenes – PlayTime is extraordinary and prescient in both content and form.
