Letter to the Community20 years ago, leaders of the Memphis Jewish community had the vision to create

a shared endowment resource focused on building the assets of Memphis’ Jewish community organizations. Through this vision the Jewish Foundation of

Memphis was launched, as were core services aimed at engaging donors in the important mission of tzedakah and sustaining our Jewish community. Through this annual report, we are pleased to present the past year’s achievements toward these goals.

The most exciting achievement has been the success of Create Your Jewish Legacy, highlighted on page 8. This has been a motivating and meaningful initiative for encouraging legacy gifts in support of Memphis Jewish organizations. With the support and resources of the Foundation, our partner agencies have reached out to their constituents to explain the importance of endowment giving and secure legacy commitments. Proudly, this program will continue for the next three years. We can only imagine the long-term impact this effort will have on our Jewish community agencies as more than 400 commitments have already been made.

Generations of Giving, highlighted on pages 10 and 11, illustrates the multi-generational focus of the Foundation. More than 35 families strong, this demonstrates that philanthropy is for everyone, at every age and at every level. The Foundation offers philanthropic vehicles for grandparents, parents, and teens. Through the launch of our teen philanthropy board just one year ago, teen leaders are learning how to evaluate proposals, set priorities and the challenges of allocating limited philanthropic resources.

We are grateful for the confidence of so many donors and organizations who have partnered with the Foundation to achieve their philanthropic goals. During the past year more than $4.1 million was awarded to qualified charities with $2.6 million supporting our partner agencies. Assets exceed $62 million and nearly 450 funds have been established. This is due to the responsible oversight of our officers, board members and professional staff whose efforts have been exemplary.

Thank you for your support of the important work of the Foundation.

President Executive Director

Sandy Blockman

Giving

“I was raised to know that charity is the gift you give for having a good life. I want to pass that message to Ellie early in her life. I have a fund at the Jewish Foundation and I want my granddaughter to have a fund, too. It’s one way to teach her that money is not only to be spent, it can grow and may be given away to those less fortunate.”

Magdovitz Family Foundation Barbara and Earl Magdovitz opened a fund for each of their grandchildren and make a gift to the funds each year for Chanukah. The Magdovitz’ feel that when you have enough, give to someone else, it’s an obligation as a Jew.

“I don’t think charitable giving starts when you are older, kids grow up with it and it is part of their essence.”

T he Jewish Foundation is deeply committed to strengthening the

financial sustainability of the Jewish community. Create Your Jewish Legacy encourages donors to make a gift to a permanent endowment fund of the Jewish community either during or after their lifetime.

Create Your Jewish Legacy

“We wish to show our gratitude to the Jewish agencies that mean the most to us through our legacy gift. The missions of these great organizations are vital to our community and we want to do our part to help them continue the great work that they do.”

Joel and Dub Ashner, Book of Life Statement, 2014

Funding for CYJL provided by: Ronna and Hal Newburger, an anonymous local donor, and

Create Your Jewish Legacy was launched in 2013 in partnership with 10 local Jewish organizations. Each of these organizations has reached out to members of the community to secure more than 400 legacy commitments to date. Create Your Jewish Legacy continues as a way to build the endowment assets of our Memphis Jewish organizations.

Pictured above is leadership from Anshei Sphard Beth El Emeth Congregation with a $10,000 incentive grant they received from the Foundation for meeting their goal. Each organization is eligible for additional

incentive grants by continuing to make legacy giving a priority.

Donors who include the Jewish community in their estate plan or make a contribution of at least $10,000 to an endowment fund of a Foundation partner agency are invited to join the Legacy Society and write a personal family message in the Endowment Book of Life, on permanent display in the Foundation offices.

Teen Philanthropy:

“B’nai Tzedek helped shape who I am today. B’nai Tzedek was a wonderful experience and had so much to do with the career path I have chosen.”

Judy Lansky is a Berman Fellow at the University of Michigan Hillel. Judy helps Jewish students develop leadership

skills through active engagement. Judy was a member of Memphis B’nai Tzedek from 2003 to 2008, serving on the teen philanthropy board from 2006 to 2008.

Abby Durham is the Community Youth Group Coordinator at Levite Jewish Community Center in Birmingham,

Alabama and runs the Teen Tzedakah program. Abby joined Memphis B’nai Tzedek in 2005, serving on the board from 2008 to 2010. She credits this experience

as the beginning of her journey in Jewish philanthropic work.

M emphis B’nai Tzedek encourages Jewish teens to take an active role in philanthropy. Featured on these pages are three graduates of B’nai Tzedek who chose to pursue a career in Jewish communal work as

a result of their experiences with Memphis B’nai Tzedek: Ben Finan, Abby Durham, and Judy Lansky.

“B’nai Tzedek started my Jewish philanthropic journey. As a result, I found myself drawn to Jewish communal work and my teen philanthropy experiences directlyinformed my job search.”

Ben Finan

and the Roots & Branches Foundation. Ben opened his fund with B’nai Tzedek following his bar mitzvah in 2005 and was an active member of the B’nai Tzedek teen philanthropy board from 2006 to 2009.

B en Finan is a 2014 graduate of Notre Dame University and was named Collaborative Giving Coordinator at

Denver’s Rose Community Foundation, coordinating teen and young adult philanthropy in the Rose Youth Foundation

Inspiring Tomorrow’s Leaders

12 ANNUAL REPORT 2014 JEWISH FOUNDATION OF MEMPHIS WWW.JFOM.NET 13

To join B’nai Tzedek teens donate $250 from bar/bat mitzvah gift money to the Jewish Foundation of Memphis to create a personally named charitable fund. The $250 gift is matched by the program’s sponsor bringing the balance to $500.

Each year through the end of high school, teens choose a qualified charity to which he or she will donate up to 20% of the fund balance.

“Memphis B’nai Tzedek gave me my first glimpse into how non-profit organizations are able to run and their need for funds.”

P rofessional Financial Advisors play a very important role in philanthropy. These legal and financial advisors help clients make informed decisions about charitable giving and advise them of the tax and financial benefits gained by making these gifts. The Jewish

Foundation of Memphis is proud to have over 100 local professionals in various legal and financial fields who support the mission of the Jewish Foundation.

“Because of our passion for Jewish life in Memphis, we want to insure that future generations experience all that this community has to offer.”

Ways to Give

Stewardship of Donor FundsJ ewish Foundation of Memphis fund holders may recommend how their

fund is invested among several investment strategies at the time the fund is established.

“This committee carries a tremendous responsibility for all the donors and for the community at large. Offering prudent low-cost choices while maintaining flexibility in investing is the key to what this committee wants to provide Foundation donors.”

Charles Jalenak, Vice President of

Investment

CashCash contributions are fully deductible to the degree allowed by the Internal Revenue Service.

BequestsBequests may be stated within a will as a specific dollar amount, a particular asset, or as a percentage or remainder of the donor’s estate.

Securities Appreciated securities held for more than 1 year are deductible – up to 30% AGI – based on the fair market value of the gift and donors can generally avoid the capital gains tax that would be due if the asset was sold outright.

Real Estate - minimum $25,000 (or $15,000 for vacant land) JFM Realty, Inc was established to accept charitable gifts of real estate. Each potential real estate gift is carefully evaluated by the JFM Realty, Inc board of directors. Examples of ideal gifts include rental or vacation homes and vacant land.

Life InsuranceDonors may purchase a new policy or name the Foundation or another charitable organization as the owner and beneficiary of an existing policy. Donors are generally entitled to a charitable deduction for the amount of the premiums or the cash surrender value of an existing policy.

Charitable Lead Trusts - minimum $500,000A Charitable Lead Trust is an irrevocable trust that names a charity to receive payments for a specified number of years. At the end of the trust term, the balance passes to heirs.

Retirement AssetsNaming your favorite charity as the beneficiary of all or a portion of your retirement assets is a simple and tax-wise way to establish a charitable legacy gift. Retirement assets left to heirs are often subject to taxes which can be avoided if the assets are directed to a qualified charity.

Life Income Gifts - minimum $100,000 ($25,000 for Charitable Gift Annuities)Charitable Remainder Trusts and Gift Annuities provide income to the donor for life (or a term of years) with the remainder being distributed to a charity of the donor’s choosing.

Collectibles - minimum $10,000 Collectibles may encompass items such as artwork, coins and sports memorabilia. The charitable deduction varies depending upon the circumstances of the gift.
