A TORAH MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
Rav Joseph B. Soloveitchik said of the Torah: "[I]t is an exciting story that we tell [our children]. It is the story of a teaching community which cuts across the ages, encompassing people who lived millennia ago, who made their contribution to the [House of] Israel, and have left the stage. We also tell them the story of people who, at some point in
the distant future, will enter the historical stage. Our story unites countless generations; present, past and future merge into one great experience." In this week's Torah portion, Shlakh-Lekha, we read the story of the 12 spies that Moses sent into Canaan to reconnoiter and bring back reports. For the most part, it is not a happy story. Indeed, the spies spend 40 days in the land. When the spies return, they report that the land is fertile and the fruit is wonderful; however, 10 of the spies explain that the cities are fortified and

that the people are giants. They therefore cry that there is no way that the Israelites can defeat them. Two of the spies counter that nothing is impossible when God is on your side. Despite the good report of the two spies, God is so angered by the initial bad report, and the fact that the Israelites believe them, that he punishes the Israelites by making them roam in the desert for 40 years. Though the story is unhappy it is important that we read it each year and learn the lessons it teaches. Those lessons may change from year to year depending on our own experiences. What Soloveitchik was saying above is that when we read Torah, we become students and teachers of history. When we know our history, we can use it to impact our present and our future. Thus, in a sense, we are what we remember. We read Torah and remember the stories so that we can learn from them and use them in our lives. The lessons we learn today can then be used by our children, and by their children. But they will also read the original and learn their own lessons. That is the gift that Torah provides. It is a story, a history, a past, a present, a future. It is a blessing. Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay
