it seems as if only a few years have passed since Bassano opened its doors trading as the new
silver wholesaler-on-the-block in August 2005. Yet, 10 years have indeed past, and in those years Bassano has changed from small silver wholesaler to a distinct presence in the South African jewellery industry. The road has not been easy, struggling to grasp a share of the market and overcoming global economic downturn, in an industry that is usually the first to suffer when conditions change for the worse.
Today, Bassano still offers a wide range of silver chain, which has remained a constant throughout the years, but also gold chains and gold earrings, 18ct and 9ct gold and diamond jewellery, Italian watchstraps and loose diamonds. Although many products and fashions have come and gone, the main guiding principle for Bassano was to bring high quality merchandise at a competitive price to the South African market and to educate on value rather than just price.
The owners of Bassano wanted to take the opportunity to thank their loyal customers, who have stuck with them on this journey, as well as their long-serving and dedicated staff in contributing to their success.
In conjunction with their 10th anniversary Bassano is proud to officially launch their latest brand, the MORELLATO watchstrap collection, at Jewellex Africa 2015. This brand is the epitome of Italian design and high quality manufacturing and is paired with well-designed stands and displays that accommodate all points-of–sale.Morellato brand launching at Jewellex

bERyL FAmiLyAquamarine (SEA BLuE-GREEn BERYL)
Beryl that exhibited this colour was treasured by the Romans who named it aquamarine after the sea blue-green hue of the Adriatic Sea. Modern fashion tends to favour a purer blue so that a large proportion of the aquamarine on the market has undergone heat treatment to remove the green element.
bixbite (REd BERYL)
This rare intense red variety of beryl was named for Maynard Bixby, the collector who first discovered it in the Thomas Mountain range of Utah, USA. The colour is attributed to the substitution of manganese for aluminium in the beryl structure. Faceted stones rarely exceed 0.50ct in weight.
Emerald(ChROME GREEn BERYL)
Pliny, the Roman historian, described emerald as embodying the colour of wet spring grass. Seldom flawless or brilliant it is the superb hue of a fine emerald that holds and satisfies the eye.
Golden berylIllustrated is a magnificent golden beryl from the “Bul-bul” claims of Urungwe, Zimbabwe.
Goshenite (COLOuRLESS BERYL)
This colourless form of beryl was named for the town of that name in Massachusetts USA where it originated from the Lily Pond Mine.
Green beryl Coloured by traces of iron beryl that exhibits neither the intense grass green of emerald or sea blue-green to sky blue of aquamarine is simply termed green beryl.
heliodor (GREEn-GOLd BERYL)
The discovery of a deposit of greenish-yellow beryl in German South-west Africa (now Namibia) aroused considerable interest in the German gem-cutting centre of Idar-Oberstein. Before long an attempt was made to launch the stones cut from this material as “Heliodor” and to claim that this was a totally new and unique gem variety. While these claims were unfounded the term “Heliodor” is still frequently used to describe beryl of this hue, particularly in Germany and Namibia.

morganite (PInk BERYL)
A much stronger case could have been made for the pink beryl Morganite if it had been claimed that this was a different and unique variety. It has a higher specific gravity and refractive indices than other beryls and its crystals form with a completely different habit. The flattened tabular crystals of Morganite contrast sharply with the rod-like hexagonal prisms of other beryl crystals.

iNSuRED by LLOyD’S OF LONDON…
What is it? And what does it mean? And where is the benefit? When we first hear of Lloyd’s many of us automatically associate with Lloyds TSB, a bank in the united kingdom, a company rather similar to FnB or Standard Bank here in South Africa.
FEATURED ARTICLE
Lloyd’s of London is in fact something rather different, and larger, than the bank it is commonly mistaken for. Yes, it is in the Financial Services Sector, but simply put, Lloyd’s of London is best described as a market place for insurance to be provided for absolutely any and everything.
Lloyd’s is made up of separately owned, funded and managed syndicates, all of which have to adhere to the strict Lloyd’s requirements in terms of solvency and business practice.
The following are points of interest about the Lloyd’s Market:• Conducts business in over 200 countries• Made up of 96 syndicates which spread the risk
across numerous types of insurance• Has capital and reserves of £23.5bn• Currently enjoys an A rating from A.M. Best and A+
ratings from Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor’s• 2014 Gross written premiums £ 25 283 million
The immensity of the premiums written and the reserves of Lloyd’s does mean that it is an exclusive market but rather by having a healthy market, premiums are competitive and cover is extensive. The security of its reserves and quality of its Risk Rating adds to their benefits. The size of the market also allows for economies of scale and reduces prices while still offering large amounts of cover.
With Lloyd’s having already celebrated its 325TH anniversary, there is an abundance of experience and expertise to call on, all of which make for great security and benefit the individuals or companies insured.
The best way to access the Lloyd’s market is via a UMA (Underwriting Management Agent). The only UMA in Southern Africa to deal with the Lloyd’s Insurance Market in the Fine Art and Specie Class is Abelard Underwriting Agency. The benefit of a UMA is that the insured and their broker deals directly with an Underwriter who knows the local market intricately.

When the AGL team arrived, they immediately went to see the venue.
It was not evident there was to be a show held there. However, in true Chinese style, they laboured through the night and everything was ready for the opening day.
The opening was attended by many important guests. Several members of the visiting South African Trade Delegation were there, including the mayor of Kimberley Mr David Molousi and the Gauteng Legislature’s Deputy Speaker Mr Uhuru Moiloa. The mayor of Chenzhou, kindly invited Craig Thomas, Head of the African Gemmological Laboratory, to participate in the banquet he held in honour of the visiting S.A. Trade Delegation.
The show was held in the Chenzhou International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Massive exhibition area of 60 000m2 hosted 2600 international stands with exhibitors from all over the world.
The AGL stand was prominently placed, with the Head of the Laboratory, able to answer questions relating to gem identification and grading.
The most striking thing to be seen on first entering the show was the display of incredible mineral specimens. The numerous mineral dealers had amazing specimens for sale. These ranged from pieces weighing close to a ton and costing a fortune to small thumbnail specimens that were quite affordable. There were also many fossils of ancient sea creatures and fossilized wood.
The next thing to catch one’s eye was the great variety of amazing carvings. Being in China, a large number of these were in jade. There was so much jade! There were many stands selling faceted and cabochon gems as well as many displaying finished jewellery items. There were a number of stands selling tanzanite, both loose and set in jewellery. There was quite a lot of sugilite that was being sold in the form of bangles and beads, although some of the material looked questionable.

miNERAL &In May 2015, the African Gemmological Laboratory (AGL) exhibited at the 3rd Chenzhou Gem and Mineral Show. It was the first show to be held in Chenzhou. The two previous hunan shows were held in Changsha, but it was decided to move it to Chenzhou to be closer to the minerals and mines.

Rhodochrosite Specimen.
It was surprising to see the large number of stands selling synthetic or treated gems. Glass-filled ruby, synthetic corundum of all colours, irradiated topaz and synthetic quartz. Plastic that was being marketed as amber. There were even some stands selling ivory. There was a gem lab that was tasked with ensuring that people were not misled. When a buyer produced a receipt of payment to the lab they would check the authenticity of the item for free. You can imagine the queue! The lab could not afford to spend more than a minute or two on each item. Consequently they tended to err on the side of caution when faced with difficult stones that would take time to make a positive identification.
The show was deemed to be a great success and was stated to attract a total of 380,000 visitors. The reported sales were in excess of RMB 1.6 billion over the five day period.

Stern was acknowledged by Absa at the awards gala dinner on Sunday night. The
awards identify members of the Jewish business community for their outstanding business achievements.
Stern’s firm has become one of the most influential companies in the South African precious metals market. This year, the company celebrates its 25th anniversary and will do around R3,5-billion in revenues compared to the R2.5-million it did in its first year of operation.
“Bernard is a true gentleman who has built an unbelievable business based on customer service and grand vision,” commented Howard Sackstein, Chairperson of the Jewish Achiever Awards. “It is also a fitting tribute to Absa which has been instrumental in the growth of his business. Bernard remains a great role model for so many entrepreneurs in South Africa
and around the African continent.”
Stern said that he is honoured to receive this accolade, but says the accolade doesn’t belong to him alone and said that he could not have done it without his wife Hilary, who co-founded the company with him in 1990.
“Together we have struggled, sweated, and worked very long hours and there were times that we were not sure if we would make it and thought at times we might have to close our doors but we kept going and the company managed to survive.” He added that if there is one thing for certain should one take the entrepreneurial route - one also has to take a lot of knocks along the way and you need the grit and determination to carry on no matter what.
He continued: “Human capital is a company’s most important asset, and no company ever operates without what makes it work, which are its staff. We have been blessed with an amazing team, and we are grateful to have staff that are really respectful and enjoy what they are doing. Most of them have been with us for more than ten years and that tells us something about our company.”
As to the key drivers of the company’s success and impressive growth, Stern said that he believes that integrity and honesty have always remained close to his heart and are key in building a sustainable business.

AbSA buSiNESS26th August, 2015 – Bernard Stern, founder of Metal Concentrators (Metcon), South Africa’s largest independent precious metals refiner, has been named the winner of the Absa SA Business Award for an unlisted company.
From humble beginningsIt was 1990 when Bernard Stern and his wife Hilary opened the doors of Metal Concentrators, initially as a computer scrap recycling company. Then the company’s core business was deriving and refining metals from old electronic equipment.
Stern recalls. “At one point we were processing some 150 tons of discarded electronic scrap per month, making us one of South Africa’s main electronic scrap recycling companies. Back in those days, we were widely known as the place where computers went to die.”
Stern adds that his company and what it did soon started to grab the interest of jewellery companies. “This is how we got involved in the gold refining business and gold and the refining thereof, remains the engine of the firm’s operations,” he says.
“Gold is a fantastic product which has been speaking to the imagination of millions around the world for thousands of years,” Stern says. “It symbolises victory, good fortune, luxury, and love – among other things. Gold has a practical side too. It is for instance used in semi-conductors, dental applications, and even in the space industry.”
The lustrous metal has proven to be a fantastic investment vehicle, Stern says: “When we started in 1990, the average annual gold price stood at $615 per troy ounce. At the end of December 2014, the value hovered around $1200. That is astonishing. Whilst gold prices have fluctuated, and will continue to do so, the metal will never lose its value.”
25 years of Firsts“Metal Concentrators was the first company in South Africa to develop and produce nickel-free alloys that met Europe’s nickel standards,” he says, explaining that in 1994, the European Union released a nickel directive to regulate the application of nickel in jewellery and products that come into contact with the user’s skin.
“Many people are allergic to nickel, which used to be a popular component of alloys in jewellery. The results include all sorts of skin rashes,” Stern says. “We are very proud of being the first South African refiner that decided to eradicate nickel from its alloys. We set the trend locally, as other South African refiners have followed suit.”
Until 2008, South Africans were not allowed to buy gold except as a gold coin, medallion or as jewellery. In 2009 Metal Concentrators was the first refiner to obtain the license to manufacture minted investment gold bars and sell to the South African public since 1911.
One of company’s most recent notable achievements was attained just before 2014 drew to a close. “The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) awarded us with dual certification against the new Code of Practices and the Chain-of-Custody Standard,” Stern says, explaining that the RJC is an international certification organisation tasked with improving integrity and responsibility levels in the international jewellery supply chain.
“We are one of two gold refiners in South Africa to receive dual certification and one of the first 10 companies internationally,” Stern says. “This means that the gold we refine is free of conflict and is mined with respect both people, human rights, and the environment.”
In addition, Metal Concentrators was the first South African refiner to recognise the potential of platinum as a jewellery metal locally, which resulted in a series of pioneering platinum training and jewellery initiatives to introduce platinum to the South African jewellery manufacturing Industry. The PlatAfrica Jewellery Design and Manufacture Competition was launched by Metcon in conjunction with Anglo Platinum and is now in its 15th year and regarded as one of the most prestigious and successful competitions in South Africa.
When it comes to the future, Stern is optimistic: “Gold is here to stay. Whilst we are happy with and proud of our achievements, we want to become better at what we do. There is always room for improvement. That is our golden rule.”

As many, or all of you might remember, my father, Derrick Carrington, very successfully ran a watch repair centre out of our premises in President Str, Germiston.
Sadly my father passed away last year in June, leaving us with a few questions in terms of the longevity of this part of our business.
Together with the remaining management at D.Carrington & Co. we decided to leave Germiston after 50 years, and re-locate to modern offices in Bedford Centre in Bedfordview.
We have established a state of the art workshop in Bedfordview, and have employed a new head technician, Mr. John Harrison, who may be known to some of you.

Cape Watch Tools and Jewellery Supplies started in 1962 specialising in watch making related services and parts, but really started emerging more into jewellery and diamond tooling industry in 1989 after the Japanese quartz movement superseded mechanical watch servicing and parts replacement altogether in the 70’s. Today, having teamed up together in 2012, Rodger Browne and Tennille hoge have recognised the need for technology in the industry. noticing that it increases productivity and therefore profitability.
They have together, with some well known international brands - such as Lampert,
Orotig, Jool Tool, Syenset, Elettronica Todescato, Magic, Projet to name a few - become the representing agents in South Africa to deliver a quality item backed by after sales service.
These brands have allowed us to spread our wings into the technology sector and introduce The Puk4 argon welder, abrasives and polishing compounds imported from Japan, lapping and polishing machinery for stones, glass and metal, setting systems, engraving and cutting machines, hydrogen soldering units, Italian laser cutting marking and casting machines as well as 3D printers for resin and wax casting. All for use by the designer, goldsmith, setter, diamond dealer and hobbyist.
Tennille mentions that Cape watch has an extensive website (www.capewatch.co.za) – prices are current and convenience is their main objective. Also offering door-to-door deliveries.
