Established over 60 years ago, the Witt Group

has expanded into one of the world‘s premier manufacturers of industrial fans. With manufacturing facilities in Germany, the UK and Switzerland, and licensed manufacturing in Canada, Japan, Korea and Indonesia, inaddition to a network of agents, the Group isable to supply products throughout the world.

Over the past 25 years, the Witt Group has added Tunnel Ventilation Systems toits range of centrifugal and axial-flow fans. Alongside a range of jet fans, the Group has researched and developed a number of systems that can be used for ventilating tunnels.

WITT&SOHN AG is renowned for their range of axial-flow fans, which are installed in tunnels world-wide. The range of fans is shown below:

Axial – Flow Fans are commonly used in shafts for tunnel ventilation or forexhausting fumes / smoke from the tunnel.

Shown above are the axial-flow fansdestined for use on a new metro project. On the left is shown thelowering of an axial fan into a shaft to extract fumes / smoke in the event of a fire.

With a number of different lengths for the silencers, nearly every required sound pressure level can be achieved. Additionally, the specially-developed impellers can operate at very high tip speeds and run at very high temperatures. X-raying of the impeller blades and the impeller hub is not necessary, but can be done upon request.

The standard jet fan airflow isshown by Figure 1. At the sides, theairflow is high, buttowards thecentre (of the tunnel) the flow speed drops dramatically.

The Figure 2 demonstrates that the Banana Jet ® fans have a more constant speedthroughout the tunnel. Whilst there is still a drop in speed in the middle of the tunnel, it ismuch less cut out than with the standard jet fans.

Service & MaintenanceService & MaintenanceFans installed in tunnels are subjected to varying and often very harshconditions. Temperature changes and air pollution can affect a fans‘s performance. Therefore WITT&SOHN AG recommends and offers a regular service & maintenance. Regular and pre-planned maintenance can and will provide long-term savings.

Tunnel jet fan maintenance

Pinneberg

For comprehensive details please consult our sales staff or the Witt & Sohn Operating & Maintenance Manual.

Our products come with a 12-month warranty, whichcan be extended with a separate service contract.

As well as carrying out maintenance on products supplied by ourselves, we are also able to service fanssupplied by other companies.

Page 9: Jet Brochure

The new Elbtunnel, situated in Hamburg, Germany is being hailed by many experts as the safest tunnel in the world. Following a number of catastrophic tunnel fires inrecent years, WITT&SOHN AG has developed a system which makes use of theirunique fan technology.

Under normal conditions, the jet fans are used to control pollution, however in the case of a fire, the damper closest to the fire (shown right) opensand the jet fans switch to fire mode.

It should be noted that the large, extract fans areamongst the most highly engineered in the world. Independently tested by CTICM of France, the fans have been tested for over 2 hours at 700°C.

It is hoped that the Elbtunnel will become the standard by which other tunnels are designed.

In the event of a fire fumes are extractedthrough a separate overhead duct andthen exhausted. Dampers are located at various points throughout the tunnel through which the smoke is extracted.

At the same time as the powerful extract fans are working, jet fans on either side of the fire can blow towards it, keeping theescape routes free to ensure goodvisibility. The concept is shown below.

PSB, Europe‘s leading company for Impulse Ventilation Systems (IVS) of underground car parks is a memberof the Witt Group.

Unique impulse fans have beendesigned for the system which monitors and controls the innerenvironment of an underground carpark. The fans have beenindependently tested to run at 300oC for 2 hours to conform to the EN 12101-3 standard.

It is in the event of a fire that the system comes into its own. Varioustests have shown the system‘s effectiveness, however 2 real fireshave proven the system‘s worth to thefire services, engineers, the car parkusers and also the car park‘s owners. In the most recent fire at the Ceramique Nordknoop Parking in Maastricht, with 2 cars fully destroyed, the car park was re-opened within 30 minutes of the fire having started.
