Therefore the speeches are given in the language in which, as it seemed to me, the several speakers would express, on the subjects under consideration, the sentiments most befitting the occasion, though at the same time I adhered as closely as possible to the general sense of what was actually said. Jesus as Teacher in the Gospel of John

John 3:1-6 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews;  2 this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him." 3 Jesus answered and said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again (or from above) he cannot see the Kingdom of God." 4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born, can he?" 5 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."

John 18:36 Jesus answered [to Pontius Pilate], "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, my kingdom is not from here."

Eternal Life and Kingdom of God

Jesus speaks more often of "life" (zoê) or "eternal life" (zoê aiônios) than he does about the Kingdom of God (see John 3:15-16, 36; 4:14, 36; 5:24, 26, 29, 39, 40; 6:27, 33, 35, 40, 47, 48, 51, 53, 54, 63, 68; 8:12; 10:10, 28; 11:15; 12:25; 14:6; 17:2-3).

Light and Darkness

John 8:12: Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.

John 9:5: As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

John 12:35-36: Then Jesus said to them, "A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, in case darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light. John 12:46: I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me should not abide in darkness.

Truth

John 5:33: "He [John] has testified to the truth

John 18:37: "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."

John 14: 6: Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.John 8:32: Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

John 17:17: Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

Page 13: Jesus as Teacher in the Gospel of John. Peter’s House in Capernaum.

Truth

John 14:16-17: And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Page 14: Jesus as Teacher in the Gospel of John. Peter’s House in Capernaum.

Truth

John 15:26: When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

John 16:13: But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

John 18:37: "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."

Life

John 11:25: Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;John 14:6: Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

John 5:21: For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

John 6:33: For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

John 5:26: For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself

Page 16: Jesus as Teacher in the Gospel of John. Peter’s House in Capernaum.

Life

John 6:32-33: Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

John 6:35: Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

John 6:63: The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.

Page 17: Jesus as Teacher in the Gospel of John. Peter’s House in Capernaum.

LifeJohn 6:48: I am the bread of life.

John 6:50: But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die.

John 6:58: This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your forefathers ate manna and died, but he who feeds on this bread will live forever."

John 6:54-57: Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me.

Page 18: Jesus as Teacher in the Gospel of John. Peter’s House in Capernaum.

Life

John 8:12: When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

John 4:13-14: Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

The Shepherd and Gate (John 10:1-21)

7 So Jesus said to them again, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are (I)thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door; if anyone enters through me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd, and I know my own and my own know me, 15 even as the Father knows me and I know the Father.

John 6:27-29: "Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that remains for eternal life, which the son of man will give to you."

Future Giving of the Spirit

Jesus as Teacher in the Gospel of John

John 7:37-39 Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 He who believes in me, as the Scripture said, from his innermost being will flow rivers of living water." But this he spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive.

Jesus' Teaching in a Rejection Context

Jesus as Teacher in the Gospel of John

1. Jesus washes his disciples feet as a symbol of the attitude that they should have towards one another (13:2b-18).

2. Jesus gives a new commandment to his disciples to love one another (13:34-35; 15:12-14).

3. Jesus explains that the eschatological promise of the Spirit would be fulfilled only after he has returned to the Father (14:15-17; 25; 15:26; 16:7-15) See John 7:36-37.

4. Jesus says that where he is going he will prepare a place for the disciples and will come again to get the disciples (14:1-4): “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?" (14:4).5. Jesus warns his disciples of coming persecution (15:18-16:4).

6. Jesus offers a prayer to the Father on behalf of his disciples (17).
