Light and Darkness

John 8:12: Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.

John 12:35-36: Then Jesus said to them, "A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, in case darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. John 5:21: For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

John 6:33: For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

Life

John 6:32-33: Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."

John 6:35: Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

John 6:63: The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.

Life

John 8:12: When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

John 4:13-14: Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."

The Shepherd and Gate (John 10:1-21)

7 So Jesus said to them again, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are (I)thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. 9 I am the door; if anyone enters through me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand, and not a shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd, and I know my own and my own know me, 15 even as the Father knows me and I know the Father.

John 5:24: "Truly, truly, I say to you that the one who hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life, and will not come into judgment but pass over from death to life" (see 5:25-26).

John 6:27-29: "Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that remains for eternal life, which the son of man will give to you."


John 6:40: "This is the will of my Father, that the one who looks to the Son and believes in him have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."

1. Jesus washes his disciples feet as a symbol of the attitude that they should have towards one another (13:2b-18).

2. Jesus gives a new commandment to his disciples to love one another (13:34-35; 15:12-14).

3. Jesus explains that the eschatological promise of the Spirit would be fulfilled only after he has returned to the Father (14:15-17; 25; 15:26; 16:7-15) See John 7:36-37.

4. Jesus says that where he is going he will prepare a place for the disciples and will come again to get the disciples (14:1-4): “My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?" (14:4).5. Jesus warns his disciples of coming persecution (15:18-16:4).

6. Jesus offers a prayer to the Father on behalf of his disciples (17).
