ThisdesignforanorganicfarminWatsonville,Californiawasinspiredbythenotionthatgettingone’shandsdirty
isintegraltothefarmingexperience.Thearchitecturalresponsewasbothsymbolicandpracticalbycreating
opportunitiesinthelandscapeforhandwashing.Theseopportunitieswerecreatedbyabasicinfrastructuralsystem
ofthickenedwallsthatcontainplumbing,rainwatercisterns,electricalwiring,andsewagelines.Thesethickened
wallswerethenpuncturedformomentsofwashing,passage,andrest.Thelargerarchitecturalelements(adining
commons,workingbarnandinternhousing)werethenpluggedintothisinfrastructuralsystem.

TheIlluminateddialoguewasanentryfortheCentralGlassInternationalArchitecturalDesignCompetitionin2005.
Insteadofdevelopinganentirelynewlandmark,ourteamdecidedtore-considertheSanFranciscoBay-Bridgeand
allowforgreeningandapedestrian/bicycleright-ofway.Additionally,anetworkofsmalllandmarkswerecreated
inthepublicparksofSanFranciscotohousekioskswheremessagescouldbetypedandthendisplayedonLED
tickersmountedtothesteelstructureofthebridge.
