PROGRAM NOTES

Selections from “Shifters” The X-Box Live game Shifter centers around a hero who, to overcome obstacles and challenges, has the power to “shift” back and forth between two opposing dimensions: fire and ice. I found the concept intriguing, and the score was thrilling to compose. This arrangement by Darren Jenkins includes three works from the score, Prepare For War!, Main Title, and The Heart of Adventure.

While each piece represents a different aspect of the storyline, the common thread, the opposing dimensions, is present throughout the selections.

Riften Wed Riften is a city in Skyrim located in the expansive world of Elder Scrolls, the fifth installment of an action role-playing video game saga developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. Skyrim is an open-world game that, by any video game standard, is geographically massive and more closely related to an online mmorpg (massive multiplayer online role playing game) then to its console and PC competition.

Riften Wed is the music for lovers and unions, past and present such as this. It depicts a love, a wedding, a lifetime shared by two people in the middle of a storm that threatens to tear them apart. Where “til death do us part” is not a reality, it’s understood: love is a gift worthy of all the pain it demands and joy that it brings.

Minecraft was originally developed as a “sandbox” game that allows the player(s) to construct objects, cities, worlds, etc. out of textured cubes in a 3D world, which has won numerous awards and sold over 54 million copies across all technology platforms. There are four distinct modes when playing Minecraft; its brilliance lies in the fact that players have no specific goals and are free to choose how to play the game. This medley was compiled from selected music released with the “Alpha” version of the game.

Video Games Live-Part 1 The video game phenomenon has taken the musical word by storm! With hundreds of thousands attending video game concert tours, it’s fast becoming the newest form of popular music. The intricacies and nuances in the music are as detailed, complex, and enhanced as the games themselves have become. In this first suite in three movements, arranged by Ralph Ford, the listener will experience serious music in a popular venue. Themes included in this suite are from the video game hits Halo, Civilization IV, and Kingdom Hearts.
