$100Our solar system is a big place with all

kinds of interesting things in it. There are nine planets in our solar system. Earth is the planet that we live on. The sun, which we see every day, is not a planet. It is a star. There are also many other stars that we see in the sky at night. Asteroids and meteors are also in our solar system, but they are not planets either. Comets exist in our solar system, too. Sometimes you can see them travel past the earth.

Texas has a variety of landscapes. In the East there are woodlands. These woodland areas have lots of pine trees and oak trees. In central Texas there is everything from flatlands to giant rolling hills. To the west the traveler might see the beginnings of mountains. All this variety means that there is something for everyone which makes Texas a great place live.

People and companies pollute the water by throwing trash into it. Chemicals that kill plants and fish are also dumped into the water. Factories and power stations pollute the air with smoke and poisonous gases. Cars also make exhaust fumes that pollute the air.  When these gases mix with the water in the air, they produce acid rain. This rain is not good for the plants on earth. The more acid there is in the rain, the faster it will kill the plants. Pollution is a serious problem on our Earth today.

$400Advertising affects our lives

everyday. Brand names are common household words. We start each day using the toothpaste, soap, and breakfast foods promoted by advertisers. Ads have made the cars we drive signs of our success. Our choices of food, dress, and entertainment are swayed by ads. Not one aspect of American life is untouched by advertising.

$500Always warm up before attempting

any strength training exercises. Failure to warm up can cause injuries to cold muscles. Remember to use proper lifting procedures for safety’s sake. In addition, to avoid harm, make sure that you have a spotter with you if you are using free weights. You can also avoid injury by working within your limits and avoiding the need to show off.

Novels and short stories are types of fiction. Drama is another example. Fairy tales and fables are also fiction. Fiction is a type of narrative writing that comes from the imagination of the author rather than from history or fact.

$400The Louisiana Purchase proved to be one of

the shrewdest business pacts in the entire history of the United States. The purchase doubled in the area of the country and provided territory from which fourteen new states were created either wholly or in part. It also gave us control over the mouth of the Mississippi River and opened up the way to foreign trade. The land that was bought was rich in timber, minerals, and natural resources of many kinds. Finally, the cost of the transaction was unbelievably low.

$500One technique to manage stress is self-

hypnosis. Another relaxation technique is the “relaxation response.” In this technique, one learns how to quiet the body and mind. Still another way to manage stress is progressive muscular relaxation. This is a procedure in which muscles are contracted and relaxed systematically. Other techniques include yoga, quieting, and diaphragmatic breathing.

The movie Apollo 13 was a blockbuster for the summer of 1995. It is an exciting story about space exploration. In the movie, the astronauts get in trouble while they are trying to return to Earth. People are on the edge of their seats waiting to see what happens. What makes it even more exciting is that it is a true story.

$200Most teenagers and young adults do

not know what they want to do for the rest of their lives. It is a big decision. There are a number of things you can do to narrow the choices. For example you can take an interest test, do some research on your own about a career, try volunteer work in the field in which you are interested. These are just a few helpful ideas as you begin to choose a career.

$300The fact that electronic computers are now

used for data processing has led the generalpublic to believe that it is a mysterious, complicated science and that the computers are giant brains. Both of these ideas are false. A computer is basically just a high-speed adding machine that performs the functions it is told to. If the input data are varied even a little, the computer is unable to operate until it is programmed to accept the variations. Unlike man, the computer performs repetitive calculations without getting tired or bored.

$400Each year millions of men and women

throughout the United States go on diets. Only a few are actually successful in achieving real weight loss. What separates the successful from the unsuccessful?  Studies show that there are three factors that contribute to successful weight loss. First, one must be committed to making real changes in one's eating habits.  Second, one must be willing to exercise, and not just once a week. Finally, it helps to engage in positive self-talk.

$500Eliminating cigarette and tobacco use

can reduce one’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Increasing physical activity is another lifestyle change that will reduce one’s chances of developing heart disease. Another controllable risk factor for heart disease is blood cholesterol level. The last controllable risk factor is high blood pressure, a risk factor than can be reduced through changes in lifestyle.

ran away from home to get away from her abusive stepmother. She said that she couldn't continue to face constant verbal abuse. Tim left his home in California when he was 17 because his father had become physically abusive. It's not uncommon for teens to run away from home simply because they want more freedom. Being a clown isn’t all fun and games. Rodeo clowns expose themselves to great danger every time they perform. When cowboys dismount or are bucked off of bulls at riding competitions, rodeo clowns jump in front of the bulls and motion wildly to get their attention. In this way rodeo clowns provide an alternate target, and in doing so protect the rider.

$300 Automation is the use of machines to reduce the need for human labor. In other words, automation is when jobs done by people become jobs done by robots. Automation can be a good thing. Because of automation, clothing, and other products are available at good prices and in large supply. Automation can also be a bad thing. Because of automation, there are over 700,000 robots in America alone that do jobs once performed by humans.
