WHAT IS “ART”
Usually, the word art makes people
think of artworks, museums, and
galleries.
Based on the art that we have
viewed, we can come to understand
that art has endless forms, locations,
and medias.
The ideas and concepts of what art
is, has transformed in the 20th
century. Traditional ideals and
thematic concepts and the
audiences have broadened.
Trivial objects are perceived as art
and no longer is the production of art
bound to painting and sculpture.
Art Terms

HOW DO WE DISTINGUISH “ART” AS A SOCIETY
Art is subjective…meaning that as
audiences view works of art, their
merit and value of the work is based
on or influenced by personal
feelings, cultural norms and or
opinions.
This reality mandates the Philosophy
of Art. So we ask questions, inquire
about meaning, and evaluate how
audiences interpret and react to
works of art. Art historians and critics
seek to define the aesthetic
experience that occurs when viewing
art.
Art is also classified according to
time periods, thematic movements,
and cultural landmarks/events
throughout time.
Art Terms
• Subjective: Based on or
influenced by personal
feelings, cultural norms, and or
opinions.
• Philosophy of Art: The study of
art that involves asking and
answering questions about art,
how audiences respond, and
how it relates to our lives.
• Aesthetic: The theory of
perceiving and enjoying
something for its beauty and
pleasurable qualities.
• Aesthetic Experience: The
experience of seeing and
enjoying something for its own
sake, or for its beauty and or
pleasurable qualities.
