We owe what we are today to that small group of people who were passionate about the arts and willing to share their knowledge with the rest of the island residents and the Golden Isles community. In that way, we haven’t changed. We have grown in number and definitely in the kinds of art about which we are passionate. Our focus is still on our members and sharing our love of the arts. Hello,
The summer has flown by. It’s been hot and muggy on Jekyll Island, which has made it easier to stay inside and
work on artwork and items for the shop and Merry Artists.
It also provided an opportunity to do some “light reading” about the Arts Association in 1971 and 1972, before
Goodyear cottage became our home.
In 1971 the Jekyll Island Art Association, held monthly meetings for members October through May. They in-
cluded a brief business meeting and then a presentation by a member or a guest lecturer. They were held at 8
PM at the Jekyll Club Hotel. Hostesses served after dinner coffee before the meetings.
What follows on page 2 is a comparison between then and now. Looking at the information it appears that we
have adapted our focus based upon our members and their interests. In 1971 Russell Fiore was active in the
association, which explains the focus on sculpture. Later, Seeley Booth brought sculpture back through our
classes program.
Today, we have the Jekyll Singers performing Christmas and spring concerts. (By-the-way, if you would like to
join the Jekyll Singers, our first practice is Monday, September 9, at 3 PM in the Methodist Church Hall.)
Back then there were members interested in the performing arts. A group of members performed plays and
musicians entertained during intermissions. If a current member or group of members were interested in the
dramatic arts, we could get back to our theatrical roots.
We owe what we are today to that small group of people who were passionate about the arts and willing to share
their knowledge with the rest of the island residents and the Golden Isles community. In that way, we haven’t
changed. We have grown in number and definitely in the kinds of art about which we are passionate. Our focus
is still on our members and sharing our love of the arts.

FROM THE GOODYEAR SHOP Jackie Becker—Shop Manager
During the month of September the Jekyll Island Authority will be installing elevators in Goodyear Cottage to
help us comply with ADA regulations. The Goodyear Shop and Cottage will remain open during construction
but there will be no Gallery Show during the month of September. The Shop will move out of the pantry and
the dining room into the Gallery space for the month. Doors to the dining room and pantry will be closed off
and sealed with plastic to minimize dust from construction. If you have items in the shop and are concerned
about how construction may affect your pieces we would like to give you the opportunity to remove them from
the shop during this time. Please follow normal removal procedures. We are being told construction should
only take a week or so and we will be deep cleaning the dining room and Gallery post construction. As soon
as the shop is able to move back into the dining room we will notify you so you may return your items to the
shop.
Thank you for your cooperation during this construction project.

Our Holiday Concert will be held on Tuesday, December 17th at the Convention Center
