In the case of Compass, the first Jeep® vehicle to feature power plants from the

state-of-the-art facility, you get 172 BEST-IN-CLASS horsepower(1) and fuel

employ dual overhead cams (DOHC) and Variable Valve Timing (VVT) on both the

intake and exhaust camshafts. The electronically controlled timing is continuously

Compass to take a different approach. Available Freedom-Drive I™ active full-

time four-wheel drive (4WD) system features an Electromagnetic Controlled

Coupling (ECC), which constantly monitors wheel slippage and transfers

torque to the axle that can use it most. During high-traction driving like on the

highway, the system transfers virtually no torque to the rear axle for improved

fuel economy.

Designed around a four-wheel independent suspension, with MacPherson

struts up front and a multilink system in the rear, its sure-footed agility is mated

to a drivetrain that's ready to provide optimum traction when the going gets

slippery. Armed with available intelligent systems like Freedom-Drive I and a

Continuously Variable Transaxle (CVT2), Compass was engineered to transmit a

Activated by lifting the chromed T-bar handle, the

system locks the electronic coupling at low

speeds. The coupling electronically modulates
