Dear ReaderHappiness is: Being woken by the sun’s rays streaming in through the curtains on an April morning. Take note of all of the scents, see how everything is sprouting and growing, hear the song of the birds and
feel the joy of anticipation.FINALLY!
Aperie is Latin for April and means to open. The year opens in earnest in the spring and the summer. It is in this month, when nature wakes up after a long winter nap. We humans do the same. Our spirits are
lifted, our energy level rises and everything just feels easier…It has now become so warm that you can start planting and even directly in pots outside. For example try Lonnie’s idea of planting in pots so that they look like large beautiful bouquets. They are fantastic and they will stay beautiful all through the summer. How many other bouquets
can do this?Use the very first tiny crops from your herb garden or buy them fresh from the greengrocer. There is just something very special about the first crispy, fresh vegetables, which we can get now. Many of them have a short season, which is only yet another reason to enjoy them in large quantities. The good thing about fresh vegetables is it is possible to make quick food without having to compromise on quality. There is simply so much power and taste in them, which asks for simple meals. We wish for renewal both inside and out. In our large bedroom theme in this issue we give you lots of inspiration for the bedroom. Both if you need to transformation the entire room or simply want tips for
small details, which can bring renewal into the room.

If you are the lucky owner of a stack of old maps, they can be used creatively and decoratively and the possibilities are many. We have used maps and a decoupage technique to cover common everyday objects. Maps, which have turned yellow with age and have beautiful faded colours go well with the French country style. So get out the wallpaper paste, brush and a good stack of maps…now only your fantasy sets the limits!
The maps can be torn into smaller pieces and used to cover round objects such as an enamel bucket, a siphon bottle or perhaps a vase, which only sit in the back of your cupboard and never come out into the light. Play with the coloured fields on the maps so you end up with a lovely end result. If you use the maps on objects, which come in contact with water, it can be a good idea to work finish off by varnishing with a clear lacquer such as shellac for example.
Another decorative idea can be to cover your notebooks or the ring binder with your favourite recipes with a map. Also the lid and inside of a cigar box are perfect to cover with maps. Afterwards the box can be used for small collectable objects, but it would also be a clever element in a nature morte. The maps are also nice to use as small posters. Wrap a course string around as a belt and let the map hang in a lovely iron clip.
The art of decoupage is real fun hobby and it is fantastic to be totally engrossed by the work. When you have first tried it, you can really get hooked and then throw yourself into larger projects. For example you can give the top of a console table its own life or why not cover a room-divider or a bed headboard? Only your fantasy sets your limits, but be careful…it is extremely addictive.

If you are not so fortunate to be in possession of old maps, new ones can also be used. Luckily you can patinate them yourself by placing the entire map or only parts of it in coffee, letting it dry out afterwards and then sanding the corners or edges a bit with sandpaper so that they become frayed. You can also burn the corners with a lighter, but be careful so that the entire map does not go up in flames. The magical part of old maps is that in some way or another they tell a story. Either you know that the area on the map means something special to you or perhaps for the previous owner. Many old maps have routes drawn on them, points of interest or hand-written notes. This is quite a brilliant and very clear sign that a person has had a personal relationship to precisely this map, which is in front of you.You can get old maps from second-hand bookshops or in old scout clubs. If you are lucky, it is also possible to find them at flea markets from time to time.
