Dates: (NO CLASSES IN MARCH)
Tuesday – 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Class in NYC
A Study in Jewish Philosophy - Lunch & Learn
Class Description: We have completed our discussions of Maimonides and his importance
to a foundation of Jewish thought today. We are now moving to what we can learn from
Spinoza and his approach. We then hope to move to the approaches of some major modern
Jewish thinkers and how we can move to a theology and philosophy of Judaism for our own
day.
Place: Israel Discount Bank, 511 Fifth Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY
Dates: March 27th
Wednesday – 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Jewish Spirituality and Mysticism
Class Description: We have now completed our readings in the Tanya and are ready to
begin the Zohar. The Zohar has been mesmerizing readers since its appearance in Spain over
700 years ago. The splendor and enigmatic appeal of this canonical text of Kabbalah has never
intrigued people of all faiths more than today, as it inspires us to regain our lost intimacy with
the divine without renouncing ourselves and the world. Ultimately, the message of the Zohar is
one of action – to seek spiritual truth and discover the presence of God in all things.
Place: JCOH Small Sanctuary
Dates: March 21st & March 28th

“Meditation of the Jewish Masters” A Four month Program led by Instructor Ari Weller
Ari will teach a Saturday morning class from 9:00 am to 9:45 am on the first
Shabbat of each month, as well as a Thursday afternoon class from 4:00 pm–4:45 pm each Thursday of
the four month program, where we will examine the meditation techniques and the thoughts of:
Saturday, March 3rd: The Baal Shem Tov: Jewish Equanimity
Saturday, April 7th: Rabbi Nachman of Braztlov: Hitbodedut (Seclusion)
Saturday, May 5th: Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman Shapira (Rebbe of Warsaw Ghetto)
Quieting the Chaos
The weekly Thursday meditation classes will build upon the actual practice of meditation that we
have experienced together on the previous Shabbat, and combine study and discussion from that
month's "Master". The two modalities complement each other, as the meditation opens and
helps focus our minds, and the study enriches the meditation experience.
By studying and practicing the teachings of these Masters the intention is to go beyond simple
relaxation or quieting the mind. Kabbalistic meditation is a means to become centered, to
wean ourselves from identifying with externals and to redirect our focus toward the center of
Once again the Jewish Center will be participating with Maureen’s Haven to house the
homeless during the harsh winter months. Beginning in November, and continuing through March we will open the doors to our
shelter which is set up at 30 Woods Lane. Here men and women will come for a warm bed, a hot shower, and a home cooked
meal. All of this done by volunteers from the Jewish Center.
If you can donate your time, please e-mail Cantor Stein at [email protected], or call during the week at 631-324-9858. If you are unavailable to work directly with shelter guests we can still use your skills! If you would like to cook or bake, we can arrange to freeze your foods until we need them for the shelter. Our guests told us we had the best meals last year; and we would like to maintain that distinction. We were only able to do that because of your home cooking, something that our guests are particularly touched by. For two years now, our shelter has been headed by Sara Blue and Dafna Priel, who will once again take the lead and ensure that
we have proper coverage and wonderful home cooked meals for our guests. Special thanks goes to Leslie Gelb who joins us every
Sunday morning at 5AM to prepare breakfast for our guests before we send them on their way with a packed lunch, and our best
wishes that their week will be safe and warm.
Please become part of Maureen’s Haven this year!
Thank you for another great year of
Community Soup Dinner Service!
Our sincere thanks to our clergy and many members who helped bake, set up, serve and clean up for our
monthly Community Soup Dinner at Most Holy Trinity over the winter months. A special thank you to our
Religious School students and families for their dedication and help. Every month, one of our classes, 4-7th
grade and their parents participated. We received many complements about how wonderful and helpful
our students were. We served an average of at least 125 meals at each meal.
We appreciate your help in doing our share of Tikun Ha'Olam - making this a better world.
The Jewish Center of the Hamptons is involved in several food pantries and soup kitchens on the east end.
We are always looking for volunteers, food and clothing donations.
Labeled brown grocery bags are in the Jewish Center foyer--you can fill them with non-perishable food
and bring them back. We will distribute everything to food pantries and shelters throughout the East End.
"The children had a wonderful time, especially those who were beginners, since they had the good
fortune to enjoy the teachings of Riley, who demonstrated her excellent technique and helped the littlest
ones fall in love with ice skating." Sally Morse
"My kids had never been on the ice before. Clark enjoyed a skating-sliding move and Jessica proved a
natural skater and now wants lessons!" Soozy Miller
PTA February Ice Skating Party
The Ice Skating Party for our JCOH Religious School at the Buckskill Winter Club on February 12th was a
huge success and everyone had a wonderful time. The weather was perfect for a fun-filled afternoon at the ice
skating rink.
We would like to thank Riley Goldstein, our Confirmation student and talented figure ice skater, who donated
her time and expertise while helping all our children on the ice and giving them lessons and making them feel
confident and safe. We appreciated your calmness and patience with even our younger students.
Thanks again to Nancy DeMattei for working so diligently to execute and coordinate our invites for this PTA
community event. We are so glad we are able to implement programs that can bring our children together and
give them the opportunity to create friendships outside the JCOH Religious School experience!
Thank you to my PTA committee for helping to set the wheels in motion for a great year ahead!
Regards,
Sara Blue
I am Sam Kaplan. I am turning thirteen this month and becoming a Bar Mitzvah. This excites me because I am continuing a tradition of my family. I have worked with young children at school for a couple of years helping them with after school programs. I decided to continue to do this as my mitzvah project. The prekindergarten and kindergarten aged kids really are fun to be with and require a lot of extra help with their shoes and learning how to play kindly with each other.
