a message from our board president

three years ago, the Board of Directors engaged in a Strategic Planning process that imagined a strong and vibrant organization. we asked “what if…” we could develop innovative programs to meet the needs of the community; “what if…” we could invest in the infrastructure and grow our human resources; “what if…” we could achieve strong brand awareness and cultivation of new donors.

with the end of the 2011 fiscal year, our three-year, 2009-2011 Strategic Plan also comes to a close. as we embark on a new Strategic Planning process, let’s look at what we’ve accomplished.

JCfS drove innovative programs to better serve our community. family Commons provided a space where siblings of all abilities could participate together in cooking, art, sports and other activities. Parents relaxed with yoga, Pilates and knitting classes.

Partnerships expanded capacity and provided connection to community. a partnership with JCC’s Camp Chi combined their expertise in summer camp with our clinical expertise in helping tweens and teens with social skills disorders, and doubled the children served. Collaboration with Jewish Vocational Service resulted in better services for teens graduating from the therapeutic Day School. administering Resources for Educational achievement, Collaboration and health (REaCh) yielded specialized diagnostic and treatment services for kids in the Jewish Day Schools.

howard Sitron joined us in 2009, structuring our leadership and solidifying resources to position JCfS for the future—in the face of a faltering economy and its social impact. we provided results-driven services and measured outcomes using Evidence-Based Practice, client surveys, the Sanctuary Model in our Residential Services, and other tools as well.

the JCfS Brand grew internally and externally, with a new employee newsletter, Field Notes, new social media outlets, and training materials for staff and the Board. Donor support continued to grow, with outstanding results exceeding past years.

we couldn’t do it without you. Each of you, with each donation, redefines what’s possible in the lives of our clients through the services we provide.

thank you for your continuing generous support.

message from our Chief exeCutive offiCer

the importance of community has been a powerful theme for Jewish Child & family Services over the past year, as it has throughout our history. Our founders were newly emigrated Russian and Polish Jews who found a community among themselves when they couldn’t find it in Chicago. they recognized the need for family support in this new world, and reached out in the Jewish tradition of tzedakah to this new and growing community. for over 150 years we have continued to evolve to provide support to all those in need.

in 2011, new partnerships were established to better serve our community. we actively listened and responded to the many constituencies we serve using our annual client survey, community meetings and more. these efforts are reflected in innovative new program developments and enhanced approaches to client care.

we are proud of the breadth of service your support afforded in fY2011: 26,311 lives touched by JCfS programs and services; 18,480 hours of direct service provided across the JCfS Community Counseling Centers; 1,505 professional consultation hours provided by JCfS staff to 24 early childhood centers across the Chicagoland region; 418 children received intensive services through our special education and child welfare services. these outputs are made far more meaningful when reflected in the positive outcomes and impact on those we have served, as captured in the stories reflected in this 2011 annual Report.

with our commitment to excellent outreach and service to our community, we asked ourselves how we could make it even easier for people to connect to the broad array of programs, activities and services offered by JCfS. the result? Our new agency-wide, one-call, toll-free number for all inquiries and access to service: 855-aSK-JCfS (855-275-5237). Online access is also available at [email protected]. further, our new and enhanced website, jcfs.org, with new, easy-to-use design and functionality, makes it easier for clients, professionals and community members to find what they need, when they need it.

Community is truly at the core of our success. Our deepest appreciation goes out to everyone who contributes to making JCfS the incredible organization that it is: our consumers, donors, volunteers, affiliated organizations, the Jewish federation of Metropolitan Chicago and our amazing, dedicated volunteers and staff.

together, we look forward to continuing to provide responsive, comprehensive services in our community.

What if she’s making new friends, feeling new respect and self-confidence? Or learning how to live a more fulfilling life with her special needs?

what if Jewish Child & family serviCes had an innovative program Called family Commons that helped Children with speCial needs like elli, who otherwise were isolated from other Children their age?

What if JCFS offered special programs such as art, yoga, Jewish studies or cooking for Elli, her parents and brothers and sisters? What if the family was joyously transformed? If the stress they feel every day could melt away—at least for an hour or two every week?

And what if, over time, those good times could evolve into better times for the whole family?

what if elli is making a lot more than Just ChoColate Chip Cookies?

Could you make the stress they feel every day melt

away—at least for an hour or two every week?

family Commonsthis unique inclusive recreation program brings parents and kids into classes at one convenient location. activities are designed for kids with special needs, plus their siblings. Parents can relax or take a class designed just for them, knowing their children are in good care and actively engaged. in 2011, its inaugural year, family Commons helped 89 children and caregivers. 98% of the participants felt good about the classes they took, 92% said they learned something new.

Tom lost his wife to a terminal illness and was left to raise his three children. What if Tom only worked part-time and struggled to pay rent and overdue medical bills? And if all three children couldn’t understand why Dad’s hugs just didn’t feel the same as Mom’s? What happens when Tom, drowning in grief and red tape, learns self-sufficiency through the Financial Counseling program at JCFS?

imagine if Jewish Child & family serviCes finanCial Case managers worked with tom to stabilize his finanCes. then referred him and his Children to a JCfs therapist to Cope with their grief. and developed a finanCial plan, set up a realistiC budget and found tom a better Job. and helped tom find himself.

With hope, heart and hard work, Tom and his children became a family again.

what if tom, a single father with a part-time Job, Could rebuild with his three Children?

tom found a better job. and a better tom.

What if Beth’s husband verbally and mentally abused her? So much so she became withdrawn, silent and afraid? And what if Beth’s rabbi and the rest of her synagogue’s leadership completed a training program called Partnership for Safer Synagogues that taught them how to look for and deal with violence and abuse in the community? What if this training gave her rabbi the tools to engage Beth in conversation and build up Beth’s trust?

what happens when beth, empowered with Courage, and her rabbi’s understanding of abuse prevention Come together? when beth realizes a produCtive, abuse-free life Could be in her future? what happens then?

Beth bravely begins her journey to a healthy, peaceful life. With her rabbi to help her along the way.

what if after years of abuse, beth finally had the Courage to ask for help… and her synagogue had the means to embraCe and support her?

a supportive rabbihelped Beth begin her

journey to a healthy, peaceful life. 10

JCaresJCaRES (Jewish Community abuse Resources, Education and Solutions) educates and promotes innovative policies and practices addressing abuse in the Jewish community. the JCaRES Partnership for Safer Synagogues provides training for synagogue leaders so they can respond to members of their congregations who may experience family violence.

to date, 53 synagogue leaders have participated in the Safer Synagogues training, resulting in over 4,000 congregants who can receive critical abuse support and resources if they need it. in 2011, 93% of synagogue clergy, professionals and lay leaders from our JCaRES programs reported that their awareness improved and they were better equipped to recognize and respond to abuse.

What if Monique was abandoned by her parents and left with no home at age 14? And what if that led to a period of hopelessness and a series of homes where no one seemed to understand? What if, at age 17, she found a safe haven, a home where they did understand? And Monique became one of the first clients to benefit from the Sanctuary Model, a revolutionary method for working with children who have experienced trauma?

what if this unique therapeutiC model let everyone – inCluding Children, Counselors and staff – have an equal voiCe. wouldn’t that be amazing?

Doesn’t everyone have a right to be heard?

what if monique, traumatized and silent for years, suddenly finds a strong, powerful voiCe?

Doesn’t everyone have a right to be heard?

12

Page 13: JCFS 2011 Annual Report

group homes – sanCtuary modelJCfS Residential Services adopted the Sanctuary Model, a national, state-of-the-art framework proven successful in helping children who have been victims of trauma and chronic stress. Emotional, behavioral or psychiatric disorders prevent these children from succeeding in family settings. the Sanctuary Model provides a safe, stable home where our staff creates a healing environment that teaches the idea that every person, big or small, has a voice that should be heard. in 2011, 60 children and teens found the safety of a JCfS group home.

13

Page 14: JCFS 2011 Annual Report

What if this child avoided group activities? Or even refused to speak? Or if Carla, an expert teacher with over 10 years of experience, tried everything she could to engage the child?

What if Carla turned to her school’s Virginia Frank Child Development Center Early Childhood Consultant?

what if the Consultant led Carla and other teaChers at her sChool in a workshop on how to identify Children with speCial needs? and how to better integrate different learning abilities into the Classroom? wouldn’t it be great if Carla reaChed this Child?

And helped him blossom and flourish and fill his brain with wonder?

what if Carla learned how to get through to a Child she Couldn’t teaCh?

what if training helped all of Carla’s students

grow and thrive?

14

Page 15: JCFS 2011 Annual Report

virginia frank Child development Center – Consultation serviCesthis valuable service provides consultation and training services for teachers and their staff, offering knowledge, strategies and professional insights to help and support children with developmental challenges and their families.
