1. Its more than just bullying Part 3 Types of Bullying Behaviors 2. Types of Bullying Behaviors Verbal Psychological Physical Cyberbullying 3. Verbal Bullying Verbal bullying is saying or writing mean things. Verbal bullying includes: Teasing Name-calling Inappropriate sexual comments Taunting Threatening to cause harm 4. Psychological/Social Bullying Psychological/Social bullying, sometimes referred to as relational bullying, involves hurting someones reputation or relationships. Social bullying includes: Leaving someone out on purpose Telling other children not to be friends with someone Spreading rumors about someone Embarrassing someone in public 5. Physical Bullying Physical bullying involves hurting a persons body or possessions. Physical bullying includes: Hitting/kicking/pinching Spitting Tripping/pushing Taking or breaking someones things Making mean or rude hand gestures 6. Cyberbullying Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. 7. What about Teasing? Teasing qualifies as Verbal Bullying if it causes emotional harm. Verbal Bullying includes taunting, name calling, malicious teasing or making threats (U.S. Department of Justice, 2001) 8. What about Sarcasm? There's a grain of truth in every joke or Many a truth is told in jest According to the ABR, A REASONABLE PERSON must know the difference between playful joking and malicious teasing. If the intent is to cause harm, not matter how delicately it is disguised, it must be stopped. 9. Is it HIB, Conflict or Neither? SETTING: Classroom. Mike is struggling to read aloud. MIKE: (Struggling to read) JOE: (Raises his hand) I can read it if you need me to. MIKE: (Slams book) You know what? Joe is interrupting me while I am trying to read. He is BULLYING me. You know what? I don't want to read this stupid story anyway. Investigation Required? 10. Is it HIB, Conflict or Neither? MIKE: (Struggling to read) JOE: (Raises his hand) I can read it if you need me to. MIKE: (Slams book) You know what? Don't interrupt me! (Stands up) I don't like people interrupting me when I am trying to read! JOE: (Gets in MIKE's face) Don't get loud with me! I don't like people getting loud. Get outta my face! MIKE: I dare you to you make me! Investigation Required? 11. Is it HIB, Conflict or Neither? MIKE: (Struggling to read) JOE: (Mockingly) Duh, duh, duh, I can't read. I'm a dum-dum. Can we have someone with at least half a brain read today? MIKE: Hey, I just... (JOE interrupts) JOE: Shut up idiot! You are just a stupid loser. (Joe kicks Mike's chair) Stop wasting my time with your r-r-r-reading. The SPED class is down the hall. My little sister is 5 and she can read better than you. Investigation Required? 12. Is it HIB, Conflict or Neither? SETTING: Classroom. Mike is struggling to read aloud. MIKE: (Struggling to read) TEACHER: (Interrupts) Hold on Mike. Lets have someone else read to the class. You obviously still need some more work with your remedial reading teacher. I will let you read when you are on grade level. Investigation Required?
