1 We are pleased to present this analysis of Australian giving, which leans heavily on the most recently released giving data from the ATO and JBWere’s own research into more recent major fundraising appeals across Australia. Lack of data is a key issue for the philanthropic sector and we hope this report is a useful addition to what is currently available. Throughout the report, comparisons to the US, a richly philanthropic country, are made. It should be remembered though that America is a different society to Australia, and some of the difference between giving levels in the two countries might be explained by the degree to which Australians (unlike Americans) feel they can rely on Government to fund vital social areas, such as health and education. Differences in giving levels are not all about generosity. We hope this report will be read by charities and philanthropists alike, both of whom we continue to advise in what are very interesting times for all those interested in giving. HIGHLIGHTS Austr alia saw its 2nd year of decli ne in tax deductible giving to June 2010 This was despite a rebound in donations into Private Ancillary Funds (PAFs), meaning underlying (non PAF) donations saw their rst fall since 2006, which had followed the tsunami giving boost of the previous year Average giving per person fell from $392 to $373 ( excluding PAFs) and the number donating fell from 4.65m to 4.40 m Australian Giving Trends – Signs of recovery from the gloom By John McLeod September 2012 www.jbwere.com
