While best known for her technically demanding reduction linocut portraits of female werewolves from throughout history, a recent series of artists’ books from recycled materials signals a conscious decision to engage with more sustainable art making practices. For these one-off creations, Jazmina recycles printed ephemera, such as used business envelopes, redundant encyclopaedia illustrations and packaging, into narratives of transformation, migration and re-imagination. Many of the artist’s books draw on Baltic imagery and themes interspersed with antipodean motifs, reflecting Jazmina’s own cultural heritage as the Australian-born daughter of Lithuanian refugees. Source material was largely gathered during a 2017 residency at the Estonian Printing and Paper Museum in Tartu, supplemented by decommissioned books from the Melbourne-Lithuanian library, and the steady stream of bills from the artist’s letterbox. Jazmina Cininas has been shortlisted for numerous works on paper prizes and has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. Her artwork has been acquired by many significant public collections including: the Australian National Gallery; the National Gallery of Victoria, the Victorian Arts Centre; the Vilnius Art Museum in Lithuania and MARKK ethnographic museum in Hamburg, Germany. Recent solo exhibitions include: Enter the Lair at Benalla Art Gallery; Hell Hunt and the Slippery She-Wolf at the Estonian Printing and Paper Museum; What Big Teeth You Have (projection), at RMIT Gallery for the 2017 White Night Festival; and Blood Moon at the Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart as part of the Stranger With My Face International Horror Film Festival. A solo exhibition of Jazmina’s artist books has been scheduled to take place in Lithuania in early 2020. Tell Tail presents a survey of Jazmina’s highly celebrated signature reduction linocut portraits alongside the first significant showcase of her artist books.
