JAPAN DOMINATES SAUDICUP UNDERCARD

By Heather Anderson

While a locally trained winner of the G1 Saudi Cup in Emblem

Road (Quality Road) will go down as a great moment in the

annals of the newest international race meeting, the prevailing

story could just be the dominance by Japanese runners on the

undercard. Fresh off big showings at the Breeders= Cup and

Hong Kong International races, Japan brought a formidable

squad to Riyadh and was rewarded with victories in the G3 Red

Sea Turf H., G3 Neom Turf Cup, G3 Riyadh Cup and G3 1351 Turf

Sprint. The nation was also second and third in the G3 Saudi

Derby behind America=s Pinehurst (Twirling Candy). Japan has

long fielded runners for the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe, but

has strengthened its challenges for other important

international events in recent years and is now reaping the

rewards.

All four Japanese winners were ridden by Christophe Lemaire.

The richest race on the card, bar the Saudi Cup, was the $2.5-

million Red Sea Turf H., won by Lemaire and Stay Foolish (Jpn)

(Stay Gold {Jpn})--yet another international winner for

charismatic trainer Yoshito Yahagi. On the engine from the

moment the bell sounded, the 7-year-old entire ground his rivals

into submission on the front end with Sonnyboyliston (Ire)

(Power {GB}) 4 1/4-lengths back in second at the line, 1 3/4

lengths to the good of Godolphin=s Siskany (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}).

Stay Foolish and Christophe Lemaire lead Princess Zoe and Joey Sheridan

Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia

Longines Red Sea Turf H. Cont. from p1

Edging over to the fence to save every scrap of ground in this

turf marathon, Lemaire and Stay Foolish were under minimal

pressure from G1 Prix du Cadran victress Princess Zoe (Ger)

(Jukebox Jury {Ire}) into the first bend, and Siskany was poised in

the garden seat in third on the fence. Nayef Road (Ire) (Galileo

{Ire}), who=d half-reared at the start, was also among the first

flight farther off the fence.

Stay Foolish was able to maintain a steady rhythm heading

toward the backstretch, as Nayef Road took over second and

Siskany was third with Princess Zoe to his immediate outside in

fourth. Inching a bit farther in front down the backside, the bay

continued to hold the advantage under a mostly motionless

Lemaire as noses pointed toward home. Nayef Road began

sending out distress signals and started to drop back while

Siskany came with his bid at the 600-metre mark. Princess Zoe

appeared to be winding up three deep just off the top pair and

Sonnyboyliston snuck up the inside leaving the turn. However,

Lemaire had done a beautiful job of conserving his mount=s

energy, and Stay Foolish lifted again to shake off his pursuers

and glide down the lane an easy victor. Sonnyboyliston bested a

game Siskany for third and Baron Samedi (GB) (Harbour Watch

{Ire}) ran fourth, another two lengths back. Princess Zoe tired to

10th.

AI have been a trainer for a long time and this is one of my

happiest moments,@ said Yahagi, who trained a pair of Breeders=

Cup winners last November including GI Breeders= Cup Filly &

Mare Turf heroine Loves Only You (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}),

whom he also sent out to victory in the G1 Longines Hong Kong

Cup. AI thought before he could win, absolutely. I knew he was

training well so we had some confidence before the race.

AHe is a one-paced sort of horse so this distance of 3000m

must help him. To lead was one of our tactics and I depend on

Christophe [Lemaire] to decide what is best in the race; I trust

him. It is a great day for Japanese racing, proving how strong it

is.@

AOnce again I took the lead and he was very comfortable in

front,@ said Lemaire. AHe used his stamina. What a performance.

He was quickly away so we didn=t stop. I am really, really happy.

He=s an easy horse, he likes to gallop. He doesn=t have a big turn

of foot; that=s why I took the lead. The ground is good, inside the

rail is good. When they are good they keep going.

AWe don=t have many long-distance races in Japan. Two

thousand metres, 2200m is a little bit short for him and today he

dominated the race. Running free like this he was unbeatable.

AWe=re happy to win these races, international races are very

important. We want to provide a good image of horse racing in

Japan. Once again they [the Japanese runners] have shown that

they are true competitors and big challengers internationally.@

Ben Coen, aboard Sonnyboyliston, said, AHe ran well off top

weight after not having a run in nearly five months. I=m very

happy with him. He jumped and got a nice position, travelled

around well and hit the line well, so I am looking forward to the

rest of the year with him.@

AI jumped well and travelled to a point, but the short side of

two miles in this ground meant it probably just quickened a bit

away from her,@ said Princess Zoe=s rider, Joey Sheridan. Cont. p3

Stay Foolish receives a pat from Christophe Lemaire | Racingfotos.com

Longines Red Sea Turf H. Cont.

He added, AShe didn=t disgrace herself and she pulled up fine

which is the main thing. The Gold Cup trip on that ground is ok,

but on the short side of two miles, she didn=t disgrace herself

and I=m sure Tony [Mullins, trainer] will have her ready for the

Gold Cup.@

Although his scores have been few and far between, Stay

Foolish did win at first asking all the way back in December of his

2-year-old year and was then third in the G1 Hopeful S. of 2017.

Successful in the 2018 G2 Kyoto Shimbun Hai, he has performed

with credit for many seasons in Japan and was second on

Valentine=s Day in the 2021 G2 Kyoto Kinen. He failed to finish

the 2000-metre G2 Sapporo Kinen last August and was off the

board in three more Japanese starts, all at group level in 2021.

Prior to Saturday=s front-running heroics, he was fifth to fellow

Japanese shipper Glory Vase (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in the G1

Longines Hong Kong Vase going 2400 metres at Sha Tin on Dec.

12.

More international challenges beckon for Stay Foolish, who is a

possibility for Flemington=s G1 Melbourne Cup over 3200 metres

in November.

ALooking forward, I hope we can go to Australia for the

Melbourne Cup later in the year,@ Yahagi added.

Pedigree Notes The late Stay Gold sired 56 black-type winners, with Stay

Foolish one of 39 at the group level. Led by dual G1 Prix de l=Arc

de Triomphe runner-up Orfevre (Jpn), the bay has 10 Group 1

winners to his credit. Stay Foolish is one of two black-type

winners out of King Kamehameha (Jpn) mares for the stallion,

with the other being the dual Group 1 winner Indy Champ (Jpn).

A winner of the Listed Turquoise S. over 1600 metres in her

native land, Kauai Lane (Jpn) also ran third in the 1800-metre G3

Hokkaido Shimbun Hai Queen S. Cont. p4

AUTHORITATIVE VICTORY IN NEOM TURF

CUP By Kelsey Riley

Fresh off major showings at the Breeders= Cup and Hong Kong

International races, Japan brought a formidable squad to Riyadh

for the Saudi Cup card on Saturday, and the nation got a

remarkable evening off to a fast start by lodging first blow with

Authority (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) leading every step of the way to

take the G3 Neom Turf Cup. Cont. p5

The connections of Authority are all smiles at the award ceremony

Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia

G3 Neom Turf Cup Presented By Jahez Cont.

The winner of a pair of Group 2s going a mile and a half and

2500 metres in 2020 as a 3-year-old, Authority was upped to

two miles during the first part of his campaign last year. He was

a neck second in the G3 Diamond S. at Tokyo before finishing

down the field in the G1 Tenno Sho Spring, and was

subsequently dropped back to 2500 metres to defend his title in

the G2 Copa Republica Argentina. He came on the international

radar, however, with his second-place finish to superstar

Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) in last year=s Japan Cup, and

was making his first start since on Saturday and his first

international run.

Breaking on top and encouraged to stay there by Christophe

Lemaire, Authority soon found himself in an easy canter on the

lead.

Last year=s G1 Coronation Cup

winner Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour

Watch {Ire}) raced wide in

midpack from his wide gate with

the Aga Khan=s Ebaiyra

(Distorted Humor) one path to

his inside and America=s Channel

Cat (English Channel) behind

them. Authority arrived at the

top of the stretch traveling best

and was never in danger,

extending his lead to up to three

lengths and ultimately hitting

the line a length and a half clear

of a mildly rallying pack that was

led by Kaspar (Ger) (Pivotal

{GB}), a former German runner

now trained locally. Ebaiyra got

up for third in her first start for trainer Francis Graffard following

the retirement of Alain de Royer Dupre. There was drama

further back as Channel Cat was squeezed between a tiring

Pyledriver and a closing Grocer Jack (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB})

and came down, but both he and jockey Joel Rosario were

deemed ok after the incident.

AI had the best horse in the race,@ said Lemaire. AI settled the

pace the way I wanted, without any pressure. Then he used his

long acceleration and did the same he used to do in Japan. He

was very comfortable and at the end his strength made the

difference. I knew he could stay the trip very well. The ground is

firm, which we wanted. The plan was to go to the front and it

worked out. I knew he would be very relaxed. At about 2000

metres I let him go; he did very well.

AThe Japan Cup is one of the best races in the world; my horse

was beaten by a Triple Crown horse in Contrail. The level in

Japan is very high so it gave me a lot of confidence running

second that day.@

Trainer Tetsuya Kimura said after winning with his first

overseas runner, ATo win a race like this is unbelievable. It was a

great ride from Christophe Lemaire from the front. It is the

highlight of my career. We started thinking about this race when

he finished second in the Japan Cup. He likes racing left-handed,

so that was one of the reasons for coming here. All going well,

he will go to Dubai next month for the Sheema Classic. I would

like to thank the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia for giving us the

opportunity to come here.@

Jockey Martin Dwyer said of Pyledriver, who eventually

finished 11th of 13 finishers, AThe draw hammered me--my only

hope was there was so much pace in the race on paper and I

hoped it would give me a chance

to get inside, but it didn=t, they

went slow and I was trapped

deep with no cover. I had no

petrol left but it was no fault of

the horse. We live to fight

another day.@

Pedigree Notes Authority comes from one of

the top families in Japan as of

late. His dam, Rosalind (Jpn)

(Symboli Kris S), is out of the GI

American Oaks and Yushun

Himba (Japanese Oaks) winner

Cesario (Jpn) (Special Week

{Jpn}), and therefore Rosalind is

a full-sister to G1 Kikuka Sho

(Japanese St Leger) and Japan Cup winner Epiphaneia (Jpn), who

has started his stud career remarkably well as the sire of three

Group 1 winners from his first three crops including the

Japanese Fillies Triple Crown winner Daring Tact (Jpn).

Epiphaneia and Rosalind=s siblings also include the champion 3-

year-old and Classic-winning Saturnalia (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa

{Jpn}) and champion 2-year-old Leontes (Jpn) (King

Kamehameha {Jpn}). Authority is one of 15 group winners for

Orfevre, formerly a very popular runner in Japan and winner of

the Japanese Triple Crown and two G1 Arima Kinens and twice

runner-up in the G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe. Orfevre is the

second-richest Thoroughbred of all time having earned a shade

over $19-million.

DANCING PRINCE GIVES JAPAN, LEMAIRE

FOUR ON THE CARD IN THE SPRINT

By Alan Carasso

Sent off the betting favourite in international markets on the

strength of his form at home, Dancing Prince (Jpn) (Pas de Trois

{Jpn}) made all the running beneath a white-hot Christophe

Lemaire to give both the country and rider a fourth victory on

the Saudi Cup undercard in the G3 Riyadh Sprint.

Soon in front from a favourable draw, the last-out winner of

the G3 Capella S. at Nakayama in December, showed the way in

advance of longshots Beehive (GB) (Fountain of Youth {Ire}) and

Rudy Trigger (Arg) (Cosmic Trigger {Arg}), as Good Effort (Ire)

(Shamardal) took the trail from fourth. Nursed along on the turn

while easily retaining the call, Dancing Prince kicked further

clear in upper stretch, with Good Effort emerging as the lone

possible danger, and hosed up to score by daylight. Chain of

Love (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), in a bit tight between the

commonly owned Gladiator King (Curlin) and Switzerland

(Speightstown) nearing the straight, finished well for third, while

defending champion Copano Kicking (Spring At Last) ran on

admirably to complete a Japanese 1-2-4 finish.

AThis is unbelievable,@ said Lemaire, the perennial leading rider

in Japan. AI knew this was a very good horse and it=s easy when

you are riding good horses. I=m so happy for connections. I have

been in Japan for two years with the restrictions and no travel,

so I was fresh tonight. My horses were just too good tonight. I

don=t know what to say.@

Pedigree Notes Dancing Prince is the lone stakes winner for his sire, a 15-year-

old son of the late Swept Overboard (End Sweep) and three-

time Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed over turf sprint trips,

who stands at Lex Stud on the island of Hokkaido.

Dancing Prince's dam, who won just $7,000 from four trips to

the races, has pedigree appeal of her own, as she is a half-sister

to Durandal (Jpn) (Sunday Silence), a three-time Japanese

champion who posted the most important victory of his career

in the 2004 G1 Mile Championship, defeating the Lemaire-

ridden two-time champion Dance in the Mood (Jpn) (Sunday

Silence).

JAPAN ON SONG IN THE TURF SPRINTBy Heather Anderson

Sunday Racing=s group winner Songline (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn})

was up to the scrutiny on the world stage and delivered the G3

1351 Turf Presented By STC 1351 to Japan by a neck over

American hopeful Casa Creed (Jimmy Creed) in Riyadh on

Saturday. It was the second win on the night for jockey

Christophe Lemaire and the Japanese contingent.

The Listed Kobai S. went to Songline last January, and, after an

unplaced run in the G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas that April, she

improved to second in the G1 NKH Mile Cup in May. The bay

dropped a spot in the G3 Sekiya Kinen returning off a break in

August of last year, but then stepped up to win the 1600-metre

G2 Fuji S. on Oct. 23. A final 2021 run in the G2 Hanshin Cup

resulted in a 15th-place finish, but she was still the third choice

on Saturday.

Songline raced in midfield as Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire})

cut out the running with Pogo (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}) and Third

Kingdom (GB) (Make Believe {GB}) shadowing his hoofsteps. The

pace was hot as the field entered the turn and the 4-year-old

filly was still several lengths off the vanguard cornering for

home. Lemaire steered Songline out into the center of the

course, and she began to let down as Naval Crown clung on to

the lead with a quarter mile remaining. Happy Romance (Ire)

(Dandy Man {Ire}) was making a similar move to Songline=s

inside as Naval Crown and Pogo faded, and just a length behind

the top four was the ominous presence of American Grade I

winner Casa Creed.

It was a true rubber match between the determined fillies,

with the two exchanging blows and neither giving an inch in the

straight. Cont. p8

Christophe Lemaire celebrates aboard Songline, his second winner on

the night | Racingfotos.com

G3 1351 Turf Presented By STC 1351 Cont.

Songline thrust her nose in front of Happy Romance with 50

metres to travel, but Casa Creed had hit high gear and had

reached her saddle towel on her outside. Songline=s margin

shrank with every stride, but she just lasted as Casa Creed

snatched second by a neck over a gritty Happy Romance as the

trio finished in a tightly packed bunch. There was a gap of 3 1/2

lengths back to Lauda Sion (Jpn) (Real Impact {Jpn}) in fourth.

Trainer Toru Hayashi said, AThis is the greatest moment of my

career. I have been training for only four years and it is my first

time racing a horse outside of Japan, so for Songline to do thisY I

think I am dreaming!

AShe is such a brilliant filly and the ride from [Christophe]

Lemaire was perfect. The owners also deserve great credit for

their ambition in coming here. As a 3-year-old last year she

raced well in this counter-clockwise direction over a mile and

she has a lot of natural speed, so we thought we could run well

coming back in distance a little.

AThanks also to Authority (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) from Japan for

winning the first race. That made me think we had the

momentum and that Songline could also run well, and it is

amazing that she did!@

Of Casa Creed=s second, rider Luis Saez said, AWe ran pretty

good. He finished strong. After the second jump we were getting

there but it was too late.@

AShe=s run absolutely superbly,@ said hoop Tom Marquand. AI

think it=s [a] testament to her heart more than anything that she

could come out here and run so well. To be honest, we were

hoping for that, but it=s tough racing out here so for her to have

gone so close is great.@

Pedigree Notes Already the sire of 16 stakes winners with his oldest foals just

5-year-olds, Kizuna has 10 group winners among that bunch

with G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup heroine Akai Ito (Jpn) leading the

way. She is out of a Symboli Kris S mare, just like the 1351 Turf

winner.

The first foal out of her four-time winning dam who specialized

at 1200-1400metres, Songline is followed by the winning 3-year-

old Teegarden (Jpn), by Duramente (Jpn). Her dam, a half-sister

to dual Japanese group winner Jeune Ecole (Jpn) (Kurofune), did

not produce a foal to the cover of Real Steel (Jpn) in 2020.

Luminous Parade has a yearling colt by Real Impact (Jpn) and

visited Songline=s sire Kizuna in 2021.

Under the unraced third dam are the group winners Renforcer

(Jpn) (Symboli Kris S), Northern River (Jpn) (Agnes Tachyon

{Jpn}) and the G1 Shuka Sho/G1 Nassau S. heroine Deirdre (Jpn)

(Harbinger {GB}). The Classic-winning French champion 3-year-

old filly Sonic Lady (Nureyev) is the fourth dam and boasts the

Classic-placed descendants Furner=s Green (Ire) (Dylan Thomas

{Ire}) and Lady Lupus (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire}), both also group

winners.

Winter Derby cont. from p1

AHollie [Doyle] set a nice pace [aboard Al Zaraqaan], which I

was able to just sit off,@ said winning rider Cieren Fallon. AI

wanted to get him comfortable, which is important on this track

with the undulations, and then when Hollie started to get a bit

of a breather in I wanted to keep the pressure on. He stays a

mile-and-a-half and I didn=t want to get done for pace. Towards

the end he picked up well, he was still a bit unorganised and

tried to run around a bit, but he found his feet in the home

straight and won like a good horse. He=s obviously the best

horse in the race and isn=t having much of a blow. He didn=t

really handle the track and his natural ability pulled him

through.@

Maureen Haggas added, AAlenquer is a pretty solid horse with

pretty solid form and Lord North had been off for a long time.

The only thing that concerned me was the trip on this track. He

has good form over a mile-and-a-quarter, but this is a sharp

track. Having said that, he was quick into his stride and was able

to get himself a good position. He wasn=t pretty coming down

the hill and was a bit unbalanced. For him to win like that,

having found the track a challenge, bodes well.

AI think he may have been more ready than we thought

because he wasn=t blowing much afterwards. The guy who rides

Alenquer at home every day, Jason Favell, does an unbelievable

job because he is not an easy ride. You would not believe how

badly behaved he is at home compared to how he behaves at

the races. The performance the horse has put in today is all

down to Jason. All being well, Alenquer will head for the [G1]

Dubai Sheema Classic next. He was second to Mishriff at York

and deserves to have a crack at a race like that.@

Pedigree Notes Alenquer is the second of five foals and the lone scorer

produced by a winning half-sister to Listed Junioren-Preis victor

Wilder Wein (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). The February-foaled

bay is a half-brother to a 2-year-old colt by Galiway (GB) and a

One Night Stand, who snagged a Jan. 15 handicap over six

furlongs at this venue, finished fifth here in the Feb. 5 Listed

Kachy S. and lined up for this second black-type start coming

back off a Feb.12 handicap fourth at Wolverhampton. Sharply

into stride for an immediate lead, he was stoked up off the

home turn to poach a decisive advantage entering the final

furlong and kept on resolutely under a late drive to hold closing

rivals for a career high.

AIt was pretty straightforward, he was sharp and I think he

won the race from the gate,@ said rider Hollie Doyle. AHe gets six

[furlongs] so I was rattling on a bit, but I wasn=t too worried

about kicking on between the three and the two [poles]. He=s

seen it out well, it was his first win over the trip and he looked

just as effective over the five [furlongs].@

Trainer Scott Dixon added, AHe ran a class race from a bad

draw in the [Listed] Kachy S., when they swamped him late on,

and we felt he had to use plenty to get over from that [outer]

draw. The owners were mad keen to go for this so we weighed

up the pros and cons and it has worked out perfectly. This is by

far his best ever run and opens up more doors for us. All the

horse has done is improve and hopefully we can keep it going to

see where the ceiling is. The fact he has done that a shade cosily

in a decent field begins to get you excited. The Sprint final is

over a stiff six at Newcastle and I don=t think that will be his

thing if I am honest. We would love it if the [All-Weather

Championship] finals were still here as he loves going around a

bend and loves the downhill section. We don=t need to do too

much with him now on the all-weather as there is no reason

why he can=t be just as good on the turf. We will have a look at

those good handicaps and maybe even listed races.@

Daumier | Bronwen Healy

DIAMOND DELIGHTFOR DAUMIER

The G1 Neds Blue Diamond S. at Caulfield has been a special

race for Anthony and Sam Freedman in recent years, and they

struck again on Saturday with an outstanding performance by

Daumier (Epaulette).

The Freedman stable has now won Melbourne=s showpiece

2-year-old race three times in the last four years, having

previously won it with Lyre (Lonhro) in 2019 and Artorius (Flying

Artie) in 2021. In between times, Hanseatic finished second

behind Tagaloa.

Saturday was all about Daumier, the Godolphin homebred

who won the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (Colts and Geldings)

on debut on January 26 before a last-start third placing in the G3

Blue Diamond Prelude (Colts and Geldings).

Ridden by Mark Zahra in Saturday=s $1.5 million feature,

Daumier sprinted out of the pack early in the home straight and

then fought hard to withstand the late challenges of

Revolutionary Miss (Russian Revolution) and Jacquinot (Rubick)

in a desperate finish.

AJust proud of the whole team,@ Sam Freedman said. AIt=s been

a fair sort of build-up to this, but the staff at Pinecliff and

Flemington B I stand here and do the interviews after a win like

this, but they=re doing all the hard work. Mark Zahra gave him a

great ride. To Godolphin, they=ve supported us with a handful of

horses every year, and everyone there is a pleasure to deal with,

they let us place the horses as we wish.

ATo the horse=s credit, he really knuckled down there late. This

colt has shown very good ability from day one, and it=s nice to

see it come to fruition. Ultimately we needed to find a couple of

lengths today B it was the same story probably with Artorius last

year. He worked super in blinkers on Tuesday. You=ve got to be

right on top of your game for a race like this, and thankfully he

was today.@

Daumier is Godolphin=s fourth Blue Diamond winner, following

on from Sepoy in 2011, Earthquake (Exceed And Excel) in 2014

and Lyre (Lonhro) in 2019.

Daumier is the first Australian Group 1 winner for Epaulette,

who himself won the G1 Golden Rose in 2012 before being part

of the Darley stallion roster from 2014 to 2020.

Now standing at the Jockey Club of Turkey Stud Farm, who

purchased him in September 2021, the Commands stallion is the

sire of 303 winners from 526 runners. His 17 stakes winners

include Champion South African 2-year-old Soqrat and G1 Del

Mar Oaks winner Red Lark (Ire).

AIt=s just the nature of this business sometimes B we had to sell

Epaulette, and he=s gone to Turkey,@ said Godolphin Australia=s

Managing Director, Vin Cox. AYou have to make decisions like

that from time to time. But the good thing is we=re fortunate to

now have this 2-year-old colt by him, who=s won the Blue

Diamond at his third start. It doesn't get much better than that.

AIt=s a wonderful result, and it was a great performance by the

horse today. The reason we all breed these horses and race

them is that you want to win races like this, particularly these

Group 1 races for 2-year-olds, so to pull it off is a fantastic effort

from all involved.

AObviously the Freedman team have done a superb job, but

it=s not only them. Results like this are also a credit to our team

on farms right around Australia. They all put in such outstanding

work to raise and educate these horses and get them to the

point where they can go on to do things like this on the

racetrack. Everyone puts in a lot of effort, and results like this

are a credit to all of them.

ATo have four Blue Diamond winners to our name now is

fantastic. Clearly we=re one of the bigger investors in the game,

but it=s not like we=ve been around for 100 years. We=ve only

been going for 20-odd years in Australia, so a one-in-five-year

record in this race is something quite remarkable.

AWe=ve had a lot of luck from giving a few horses to Anthony

and Sam Freedman to train for us in recent years, and they

seem to be developing a bit of a bad habit of winning this race,

Vin Cox and Sam Freedman with the

Blue Diamond trophy | Bronwen Healy

so that=s something that we=re very happy to be a part of as

well.@

One of the most remarkable aspects of Saturday=s result is

Daumier=s date of birth B November 26, 2019.

AIt=s quite amazing for such a late foal to get to the point

where he's winning a race like this as a 2-year-old,@ Cox said. AHe

was always a nice horse while he was growing up, and he was

very much a forward-looking type, albeit such a late foal.

AI remember in the very early days of his education with the

Freedman stable, they came to us and told us that he was a

particularly nice horse. So we were always quite hopeful with

him, and he=s proven the Freedman team right.@

Daumier is the second foal out of Illustrate (Street Cry {Ire}),

whose dam Parables (Lonhro) won the G2 Surround S. and G3

Silver Shadow S. and placed in the G1 Flight S.

Illustrate herself was unraced, but she is a half-sister to Marble

(Exceed And Excel), who placed in the G3 Gold Coast Guineas

and Listed Mick Dittman Plate.

Daumier=s older half-brother Depiction (Exceed And Excel) has

been a winner this season, while Illustrate subsequently went to

Brazen Beau and produced the yearling colt named Ukiyoe. She

returned to Brazen Beau again last spring.

AIllustrate has made a great start with two winners from her

first two foals to race, including a Blue Diamond-winning colt,

and she=s turning into a fantastic broodmare,@ Cox said. AWe=re

very excited about what could be still to come in the future.@

VERRY ELLEEGANT DEFENDS CHIPPING

NORTON CROWN Champion mare Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) lifted her

Group 1 count to 11 at Randwick on Saturday, and in the

process she did something she had never done before in her

remarkable career. Previously the winner of 10 different Group

1 races, the versatile 6-year-old lined up in the TAB Chipping

Norton S. and successfully defended her title from 12 months

ago. It was the first time in her career that Verry Elleegant has

won the same race twice.

A jaw-dropping winner of the Melbourne Cup in early

November with 57 kilograms on her back, Verry Elleegant

returned to action with a seventh-placing in the G2 Apollo S. two

weeks ago. She was sent out as favourite for her second-up

performance on Saturday, and she lived up to expectations on a

testing Heavy track.

Cruising into contention at the home turn for jockey James

McDonald, Verry Elleegant sprinted to the lead in the straight in

Page 18: JAPAN DOMINATES SAUDI CUP UNDERCARD

what looked like a winning move. But she began to peak on her

run late in the race, and longshot She=s Ideel (Dundeel {NZ})

emerged as a distinct threat on her outside. Verry Elleegant

responded to that challenge with all of her well-known fighting

qualities, holding on for a 0.14l win.

AThat=s touched me a little,@ said trainer Chris Waller, who has

now won the Chipping Norton 10 times. AShe is just an amazing

horse to work with. I am blessed to be in the position I am to

work with these great horses, great people that work behind the

scenes, as has been the case with this horse from day one B

even before she got to me. She=s a real piece of work, fights like

a tiger. I thought the second horse might have had us at the

100-metre mark, but that=s when the Verry Elleeegant qualities

pop in and she lifts to another level, and that=s just her. She is in

for a great prep.

AObviously this race has been pretty good to us, and this is her

second time as well. The Ranvet has always been the plan for

her next run, then the Queen Elizabeth B so three weeks and

three weeks. It works out perfectly.@

Sunday marks the 70th birthday of the unbeaten Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner and

highly influential sire Ribot. The occasion was commemorated on Saturday with an

elegant ceremony in Pisa, attended by the mayor of Pisa, and with a 'Ribot Day' at San

Rossore Racecourse, featuring the annual Ribot Cup. Ribot was bred by Federico Tesio

and born in Newmarket, England and trained in Italy. Ribot is pictured above in August

1960 at Darby Dan Farm in Lexington, KY, where he stood the majority of his stud

career and is buried. | Keeneland Library/Meadors Collection

Emblem Road (outside) overtakes Country Grammer

to win the Saudi Cup | racingfotos.com

EMBLEM ROAD ROLLS TOSAUDI CUP VICTORY

By Kelsey Riley

The world=s richest horse race contained plenty of

international star power, with the likes of GI Kentucky Derby

winner Mandaloun (Into Mischief) facing off with defending

winner Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), G1 Champion S. victor

Sealiway (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) and GI Breeders= Cup Distaff

victress Marche Lorraine (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}), but in the end it

was a new name written among the global racing elite with the

locally trained Emblem Road (Quality Road) springing the upset

in the $20-million G1 Saudi Cup. Though he has raced exclusively

in Saudi Arabia since being purchased for $80,000 at OBS June in

2020, Emblem Road traces his roots back to Kentucky. Bred by

Brian Moore=s Brushy Hill Enterprises out of the Bernardini mare

Venturini, Emblem Road was born at Threave Main Stud in Paris,

Kentucky. His mating was planned by the late Mike Recio, whose

South Point Sales Agency sold him for $230,000 at Keeneland

September in 2019.

Now owned by Prince Saud bin Salman Abdulaziz, Emblem

Road came into Saturday=s 1 1/8-mile race off the back of three

straight wins, but looked likely to have blown all chance at the

start when breaking slowest of all from gate five. Rider Wigberto

Ramos didn=t panic, however, and kept Emblem Road in touch

with the pack but still with plenty to do as the Dubai raider

Secret Ambition (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) moved to make

the running. Amr Zedan=s Country Grammer (Tonalist) raced in

Secret Ambition=s slipstream while Art Collector (Bernardini)

kept the frontrunner company to the outside, with Midnight

Bourbon (Tiznow) tracking the GI Woodward S. winner.

Wigberto Ramos celebrates his Saudi Cup triumph | JCSA

Saudi Cup cont.

Mandaloun and Mishriff raced in the three and four paths

while stalking the pace, with Marche Lorraine and Sealiway

further toward the back. Emblem Road, meanwhile, began to

circle the field as they ran into the bend, quickly picking off rivals

while traveling five wide. By the time they straightened, Emblem

Road was running on the heels of his stablemate Making

Miracles (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), likewise running a bold race at long

odds. With Art Collector having called it a day at the quarter

pole and Secret Ambition soon dropping back on the rail, it was

a tussling Country Grammer and Midnight Bourbon who

inherited the lead, but Emblem Road soon arrived on their

outside, with Making Miracles also rallying gamely in behind. As

Midnight Bourbon ceded, Emblem Road grabbed the lead from

Country Grammer at the 50-meter mark and hit the line a half-

length the best. Making Miracles stayed on for fourth, while the

Uruguayan raider Aero Trem (Brz) (Shanghai Bobby) grabbed

fifth at huge odds. Marche Lorraine was sixth, while Mandaloun

faded to ninth and Art Collector 12th. Sealiway and Mishriff

were distanced in 13th and 14th, respectively.

Emblem Road and Ramos returned to raucous celebrations in

the King Abdulaziz Racecourse stands, and Prince Bandar Bin

Khalid Al Faisal, chairman of the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia,

summed up the occasion: ATo have a locally trained horse

perform that way is very emotional. I=m very happy for the

connections, and I=m happy for Saudi Arabia. I think Mishriff, a

Saudi-owned horse [the 2021 Saudi Cup winner], did amazing

things to spread the love of horses. And now to have a

locally-trained horse win it [the Saudi Cup] is extremely special,

and I=m really excited about what this means for the future of

horse racing in Saudi Arabia.@

Ramos explained how he put his knowledge of the course to

good use. AMy horse ran a great race and I broke good and my

horse was very strong,@ he said. AHe wanted to go early, but I

took my time with him and took a little hold and saw another

horse, so then I just waited for the 500 metres to ask him. The

key on this track is that you have to be near the front when you

pass the 800 metres. If you=re near, you are in a good position

and outside is the best part of the track. It=s a big turn, so when

you put a horse who comes from behind all the way on the

outside, they finish a lot better. I knew that I could do it, but

now that I=ve done it, I still don=t believe it. I beat so many good

horses and this is the biggest race in the world. I think he could

go on to the Dubai World Cup. He=s the kind of horse who can

do it.@

Emblem Road has won seven of nine starts and has never

been off the board, and he has raced exclusively over this track.

He broke his maiden going a mile by 6 1/4 lengths in November

of 2020 three weeks after running a debut third, and he won a

pair of allowance races in late December and early January of

last year before being put away for the season. Emblem Road

was second on return on Aug. 28 before winning a local stakes

race by 14 lengths. He rounded out the year with a five-length

victory in November and returned a winner once again in a

Jan. 15 stakes over Great Scot (GB) (Requinto {Ire}), who was

Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia

third in last year=s Saudi Cup but only made it as far as the also

eligibles for this year=s edition.

Flavien Prat and Joel Rosario aboard runner-up Country

Grammer and third-place Midnight Bourbon, respectively, had

positive feedback on their mounts. Prat said, A[Country

Grammer] ran great. When I pulled away I thought I was going

to win, I thought it was going to be enough and that my horse

was doing the hardest, but the winner was just too good and

finished harder.@

Rosario said of Midnight Bourbon, AI thought he ran really well;

it was probably a little bit different with him but he showed

heart. He did great.@

Florent Geroux said of Mandaloun, ANo good. He just wasn=t

there today. We knew the locals were good horses but we

thought the outside horses might be better.@

Ryan Moore and David Egan provided insight on the well-

beaten European fancies. Moore said of Sealiway, who was

running on the dirt for the first time, AHe started really well. He

had more speed than I expected and the pace was strong, and

once he got shuffled back he got some kickback and he didn=t

know what to do. He=s a good horse.@

Egan said of Mishriff, AHe didn=t jump as sharp as last time but

I did a similar thing and kept him out wide. He got there with

ease but once I turned into the bend I was struggling from a long

way out. I hope he=s alright, there=s obviously something amiss.

He=s better than that.@

Pedigree Notes:

Saudi Arabian themes run along the bottom of Emblem Road=s

pedigree, too: his second dam is the four-time Grade I-winning

filly Ventura (Chester House), who was bred by the late, great

Saudi Arabian breeder Khalid Abdullah of Juddmonte Farm.

Emblem Road=s dam, the unplaced Venturini, was the first live

foal out of Ventura and was purchased by Brushy Hill for

$62,000 at Keeneland November in 2016 in foal to Temple City.

The resulting produce was the Canadian listed-placed Kunal, and

Emblem Road is the mare=s second foal. She has a 2-year-old

colt by Nyquist. Ventura has since produced the G3 Prix de

Lieurey winner Fount (GB) (Frankel {GB}). The dual South African

Group 1 winner Queen Supreme (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus})

appears under the third dam Estala (GB) (Be My Guest).

PINEHURST TOUGHS IT OUT IN SAUDI

DERBY by Alan Carasso

The Saudi Derby had been won by horses based in Japan in

each of its first two runnings and the island nation swept the

first three races on Saturday's Saudi Cup undercard. Given a

positive ride by Flavien Prat over a racing surface that seemed

kind to front-runners, Pinehurst (Twirling Candy) had his full

battling qualities on display and withstood a late charge from

Sekifu (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) to register a half-length success in

the $1.5-million test, upgraded to Group 3 level for the first time

in 2022.

Off to a good start from a wide gate, last year's GI Del Mar

Futurity hero found his way to the front after the opening 400

meters, as the locally trained I Am Magic (Ire) (Magician {Ire})

tried to keep pace inside, with Cattleya S. hero Consigliere (Jpn)

(Drefong) close in tow. Cont. p8

Flavien Prat, Jimmy Barnes and Humberto Gomez receive their

trophies following the Saudi Derby | Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia

Saudi Derby cont.

Maintaining a slender advantage on the turn as I Am Magic

retreated, Pinehurst was narrowly in front turning for home as

Sovereign Prince (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) chimed in three out, kept

finding into the final eighth of a mile under a vigourous ride and

boxed on gamely as Sekifu pulled back the winning margin to a

half-length. Consigliere was rather one-paced in third, while the

previously unbeaten Alnaader (KSA) (Teletext) fought on

bravely to be a creditable fourth.

AI=m very proud of him and happy for my team,@ winning

trainer Bob Baffert said from afar. AIt=s exciting to win after

coming up short a couple of times over there. I hate when they

show that 100-meter line on the screen because I=ve lost so

much money in that last 100 meters at that track the past two

years, but we got it done today.@

Baffert suggested that Pinehurst, who was exiting a runner-up

effort in the seven-furlong GII San Vicente S. Jan. 29. would run

next in the G2 UAE Derby at Meydan Mar. 26 over a more-

demanding 1900-meter journey around two turns.

Pedigree Notes:

One of his sire's seven top-level winners and 14 graded

winners, Pinehurst hails from a talented and deep Sabine Stable

family.

His dam, acquired by breeder Fred Hertrich III for $95,000 at

Keeneland January in 2015, is a daughter of Sabine's dual stakes-

winning Win's Fair Lady, whose Grade III-winning daughter First

Passage (Giant's Causeway) produced GIII Molly Pitcher S.

heroine Berned (Bernardini). The colt's third dam, the Grade III

winner Win Crafty Lady, not only bred MGSW & GISP Graeme

Hall (Dehere), but also $1.65-million Fasig-Tipton Calder grad

and future GISW Harmony Lodge (Hennessy), whose Grade III-

winning son Stratford Hill (A.P. Indy) coincidentally stands stud

in Saudi Arabia. Cont. p9

The one-eyed Un Ojo | Coady

UN OJO RALLIES LATE TO CAUSE REBEL

BOILOVER by Alan Carasso

A one-eyed horse, as his name would imply, Un Ojo (Laoban)

took the shortest way around over an increasingly rain-affected

Oaklawn main track, and found his best stride in the final 50

yards, outfinishing an unlucky Ethereal Road (Quality Road) to

cause a 75-1 upset of Saturday's GII Rebel S. in [not-so] Hot

Springs.

Ridden for pace from his inside draw, Kavod (Lea) dueled

inside of heavily favored GIII Southwest S. hero Newgrange

(Violence) passing under the wire for the first time and made

the running just off the inside through an opening couple of

furlongs in :23.42. Un Ojo scraped paint from midpack early on,

then was slipped a bit of rein by Ramon Vazquez to ease into

third as the Rebel field reached the half-mile marker.

About the same time that John Velazquez began to get serious

aboard the previously unbeaten Newgrange, Vazquez was after

Un Ojo to take a shot up the fence approaching the entrance to

the stretch. Unable to take full advantage at that juncture, Un

Ojo was shuffled back to about fourth position as Ethereal Road,

trapped out for the entire trip, rolled up outside of Newgrange

to make a line of three about three-sixteenths from home.

Despite doing it toughest over

what appeared a very sticky

surface, Ethereal Road hit the

front at the furlong grounds and

looked as if he was home free,

but Un Ojo found his second

wind closest to the rail with a

sixteenth of a mile to race and

was home narrowly best. Barber

Road (Race Day) raced in the

slipstream of the eventual

winner for much of the race,

lost a bit of momentum when

swerving toward the fence

nearing the final eighth of a mile

and attacked the line to just

miss second. Newgrange could do no better than sixth.

Un Ojo graduated at second asking for this trainer at Delta

Downs Nov. 5 and was fourth on 15 days' rest in the Jean Lafitte

Futurity before joining the barn of Tony Dutrow to take

advantage of the state-bred program in New York. A narrowly

beaten and troubled second in the New York Stallion Series S. at

Aqueduct Dec. 18, the March foal was exiting a strong finishing

runner-up effort behind Early Voting (Gun Runner) in the

modestly rated and widely criticized renewal of the GIII Withers

S. at the Big A Feb. 5.

AI=ve loved this horse since day one,@ said assistant trainer

Ricky Courville, who said that Un Ojo lost his eye in a paddock

accident as a foal. AI knew he had the talent to be this kind of

horse. I always had the confidence in him. He just improved so

much every single day, every single race. This is a dream come

true. Two strong efforts in his last two races. He closed really

well in the last two races with [trainer] Mr. Dutrow, who has

done a great job with the horse. He sent him down here for us

to run and he came here. We were hoping he would close good.

He kind of laid a little closer than we thought. He grinded away

today.@

Pedigree Notes:

Un Ojo is the first graded winner and fourth stakes winner

overall from the second crop to the races for the late Laoban,

who passed away at the age of eight last May. He is the sire's

10th black-type winner and third winner at the graded level

overall.

Southern Equine Stable, who

raced Laoban to a 27-1 upset in

the 2016 GII Jim Dandy S.,

acquired the colt's multiple

stakes-placed dam for $40,000

with this foal in utero at the

2018 Fasig-Tipton New York Fall

Mixed Sale at Saratoga. Risk a

Chance is a daughter of GSW

Seeking the Ante, whose four-

time stakes-winning daughter

Mineralogist (Mineshaft)

produced SW Can You Diggit

(Tiznow). Un Ojo's third dam was

dual-surface Grade I winner

Antespend, acquired by Chester and Mary Bromans'

Chestertown Farm for $900,000 as a horse of racing age at the

1997 Keeneland April Sale who became the dam of the

Bromans' GI Florida Derby hero Friends Lake (A.P. Indy).

SECRET OATH ROLLS IN HONEYBEE

by Alan Carasso

Briland Farm homebred Secret Oath (Arrogate) laid down yetanother marker on her march toward the GI Longines KentuckyOaks, streaking clear of her foes for a fluent 7 1/2-length rompin Saturday's GIII Honeybee S. at Oaklawn Park. Prohibitively favored, with GII Golden Rod S. runner-up Yuugiri(Shackleford) the only other one the bettors wanted, SecretOath had to be re-balanced after breaking a bit inward at thestart and was a joint-last into the clubhouse turn as Optionality(Gun Runner) and Yuugiri matched motors up front. A fractionkeen and racing with her mouth open as they reached thebackstretch, the chalk settled better approaching the three-eighths pole, but was hemmed in for several strides as IceOrchid (Super Saver) rolled up three wide to enter the fray. With Optionality beginning to retreat at the fence, LuisContreras grabbed hold of Secret Oath, guided her around herweakening foe, shot through an opening at the inside left byYuugiri and widened under a left-handed stick to crush. AI got a great break and good position,@ Contreras reported. AIjust sat right behind and at [the three-eighths pole], she tried topull me again. I just waited and waited. My thinking was to gooutside, but I had another horse right there, so I stayed a littlelonger. When I saw the rail open and asked her to go, she madea tremendous move.@ For his part, Lukas was not ruling out swinging for the fencesover the coming weeks. AShe=s nominated here [GI Arkansas Derby] and the [GI]Kentucky Derby,@ he said. AThe thing that I=m most happy aboutis that [Oaklawn] has changed [the date of the Arkansas Derby]from [three] weeks in front of the Kentucky Derby to five. FIRST GRADED WINNER FOR SIRE

Letruska | Ryan Thompson

A 5 1/2-length maiden winner at second asking while trying

two turns for the first time at Churchill on Halloween, Secret

Oath was only fifth in the Nov. 27 Golden Rod, but atoned in no

uncertain terms with an 8 1/4-length allowance romp going the

short-stretch mile at this venue Dec. 31. Sent off at 1-2 in the

Jan. 29 Martha Washington S., she had better than seven

lengths on Optionality on the wire and was similarly dominant

Saturday.

Letruska and trainer Fausto Gutierrez | Lauren King

Royal Delta S. cont.

When last seen at the races as the 17-10 favorite in the

GI Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff in early November, Letruska

had absolutely nothing go her way, as she attended a suicidal

pace and unsurprisingly folded, beating just one rival home.

Having since been rewarded with the Eclipse Award for her total

body of work in 2021, the St. George homebred returned to

action in Saturday's GIII Royal Delta S. and made very light work

of five grossly overmatched rivals.

Kicked straight into the lead by Jose Ortiz, Letruska crossed

down onto the rail and relaxed nicely on the engine through an

opening quarter-mile that was clocked in a comfortable :24.39.

Able to ration her speed evenly through the middle furlongs,

Letruska was confidently handled around the turn as she

continued to build an imposing advantage and glided home ears-

pricked and never out of a high gallop to get back to her winning

ways.

Letruska became a household name with a battling defeat of

multiple champion Monomoy Girl (Tapizar) in last year's

GI Apple Blossom H. and she promptly added front-running

tallies in the GI Ogden Phipps S. and GII Fleur de Lis S. A game

half-length winner of the GI Personal Ensign S. at Saratoga last

August, the bay led them on a merry chase in the GI Juddmonte

Spinster S. Oct. 10, but attended the wicked early fractions in

the Distaff and hung around to the top of the lane before

hoisting the white flag. A return trip to Hot Springs for the Apple

Blossom is in the cards, trainer Fausto Gutierrez said following

the victory.

Pedigree Notes:

Letruska's dam, third for Cobra Farm and Stan Hough in the

2009 GII Adirondack S., is a full-sister to GI Del Mar Futurity

winner J P's Gusto and was purchased by St. George Farm for

$100,000 carrying the filly that would become Letruska at the

2015 Keeneland November Sale. Magic Appeal is also the dam

of the once-raced Ocotzingo (Hard Spun), the 2-year-old colt

Prudencio (Arrogate) and a yearling filly by Malibu Moon. She

was most recently covered by Curlin.

FOY CONTENDERS BREEZE IN FLORIDA The South Florida worktab was dotted with several horses

tuning up Saturday morning for a possible start in the GII Fasig-

Tipton Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park Mar. 5.

WinStar Farm and Siena Farm LLC's 'TDN Rising Star'

Emmanuel (More Than Ready) will be in search of a third win in

as many starts in the Fountain of Youth and tuned up for the

8 1/2-furlong test with a bullet half-mile in :48.05 (1/32)

Saturday morning at trainer Todd Pletcher's base at Palm Beach

Downs.

He worked great, I was very pleased with it,@ said the

conditioner, who also breezed GII Remsen S. hero Mo Donegal

(Uncle Mo, 4f, :49.37) and GII Iroquois S. hero Major General

(Constitution, 5f, 1:02.29). Both are under consideration for the

Fountain of Youth.

AI don=t know for sure. I have to talk to Jerry Crawford about

Mo Donegal tomorrow,@ Pletcher said. AI talked to [WinStar=s]

Elliott [Walden] a little bit this morning. One of my concerns is

that it looks like it=s going to be a big field. You might enter and

draw a bad post. We might take a look at entering both Mo

Donegal and Major General. All things being equal, Major

General will probably go to the [Mar. 12 GII] Tampa Bay Derby.@

Rattle N Roll (Connect), winner of last year's GI Claiborne

Breeders' Futurity, prepped for his seasonal debut in the

Fountain of Youth by drilling five-eighths of a mile in :58.67

Saturday morning over the Gulfstream Park main track.

AIt went really well. The horse worked super,@ trainer Ken

McPeek said. AHe worked fantastic and came out of it good.

We=re going to do a little gate work Wednesday, and he=s all

set.@

Howling Time (Not This Time), unraced since his fifth-place

effort to Smile Happy (Runhappy) in the GII Kentucky Jockey

Club S. in late November, went five furlongs in :58.54, while his

Dale Romans stablemate Giant Game (Giant's Causeway)

covered a similar distance in :59.04.

Simplification (Not This Time), an excellent second in the

GIII Holy Bull S., went five furlongs in 1:02.66 at Gulfstream Park

for trainer Antonio Sano.

Bob Baffert at Santa Anita | Benoit

Want to send a “LETTER TO THE EDITOR”

of the Thoroughbred Daily News?

Send an e-mail to: [email protected]

CALIFORNIA TO HONOR EITHER

SUSPENSION OR STAY OF KY BAFFERT

RULING by Dan Ross

As had been anticipated, the California Horse Racing Board

(CHRB) will honor the 90-day suspension meted down to trainer

Bob Baffert by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) if

the trainer=s legal efforts to block the suspension aren=t

successful in the interim, confirmed a CHRB spokesperson

Saturday morning.

Likewise, the CHRB will reciprocate any stay on the KHRC=s

ruling Aif granted by a court,@ the spokesperson confirmed in an

email.

Earlier this month, the KHRC handed Baffert a 90-day

suspension and a $7,500 fine after Medina Spirit (Protonico)

tested positive for an elevated amount of betamethasone, a

Class C anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, after last year=s GI

Kentucky Derby.

If enforced, the suspension will run March 8 through June 5.

On Friday, the KHRC denied Baffert=s request for a stay on the

suspension. In the immediate aftermath of that decision,

Baffert=s legal team stated that they would seek legal

intervention in court.

ADenial of the stay is consistent with arbitrary and capricious

manner in which the stewards have ignored the facts and law in

this manner,@ said Baffert attorney, Clark Brewster.

AFortunately, we will soon procedurally eclipse the biased actors

and have the ear of adjudicators that adhere to the rule of law

instead of man.@

The basis of the CHRB=s actions is rule 1484, pertaining to

AEvidence of Unfitness for License.@

The rule 1484 states: AIf any applicant for a license or any

licensee is under suspension, set down, ruled off, excluded from

the inclosure, or otherwise barred from any racing occupation

or activity requiring a license, it is prima facie evidence that he

or she is unfit to be granted a license or unfit to hold a license or

participate in racing in this State as a licensee during the term of

any suspension or exclusion from racing imposed by any

competent racing jurisdiction.@

When it comes to what will happen to the horses in Baffert=s

care for the duration of the 90-day suspension, the KHRC ruling

states that, AEntry of all horses owned or trained by Mr. Baffert

is denied pending transfer to persons acceptable to the

stewards.@

The TDN emailed and texted Marc Guilfoil, the executive

director of the KHRC, for clarification on who the Kentucky

stewards deem acceptable, and whether that includes Baffert's

assistants, but hasn=t yet received a response.

The relevant rules in Kentucky appear unclear on the specifics

of the horse transfer process in this particular scenario.

The TDN also asked the CHRB for clarification on what would

happen to the horses in Baffert=s care in California if the stay is

denied in court. AWe are currently working through the legal

analysis with respect to whether reciprocation requires

enforcement of the terms of suspension under California rules

or Kentucky rules,@ the CHRB spokesperson wrote, in response.

The CHRB=s spokesperson did, however, highlight language in

the CHRB=s rules guiding disciplinary actions in cases where

licenses are revoked through medication violations.

The CHRB prohibits a trainer whose license is revoked because

of a medication violation from being able to benefit financially

through the period of their suspension.

AThis includes, but is not limited to, ensuring that horses are

not transferred to licensed family members or to any other

licensee who has been an employee of the licensee whose

license is revoked within the previous year,@ the rules state.

Furthermore, trainers suspended 60 days or more are banned

from all CHRB premises, for example, and must forfeit their

stalls and remove from their barn areas all Asignage, colors,

advertisements, training-related equipment, tack, office

equipment, and any other property.@

Baffert and Zedan | Coady photo

ZEDAN OFFERS PASSIONATE DEFENSE OF

BAFFERT ON SAUDI TELECAST by Sue Finley

Amr Zedan, who sat down with Nick Luck on the world feed of

the Saudi Cup Day races Saturday, offered a passionate defense

of his trainer and friend Bob Baffert, pledging to take their

Kentucky Derby title defense of Medina Spirit (Protonico) all the

way to the U. S. Supreme Court if necessary, using his

substantial means to do so.

"Myself, my means, my resources are at Bob Baffert's

disposal," Zedan told Luck. "We are going to see this 'til the end,

and if it takes going to the Supreme Court, I will throw every

single bit of me into this. That man is a good, decent family man

and I will not stand for any more insults, any more criminal

allegation to a man that has been nothing but great to this sport

that we all love."

The comments were made hours before their Country

Grammer (Tonalist) posted a second-place finish in the G1 Saudi

Cup.

"This sport is barely hanging on by a thread," he continued.

"The last thing we need is personal biases, jealousy to kick in. All

we're asking for is an opportunity to present our case

objectively."

Eight days after Medina Spirit's win in the GI Kentucky Derby,

Baffert told a gathering of media outside his Churchill Downs

barn that he had tested positive for the presence of

betamethasone in the race, and said he hadn't injected the colt

with the substance. Two days later, he revealed that the horse

had been treated with the ointment Otomax, which contains

betamethasone, for a skin rash.

But Zedan told Luck he didn't understand--after they took a

split sample of Medina Spirit's urine to the New York Equine

Drug Testing and Research Laboratory Director George Maylin,

to prove that the betamethasone in the colt's system came from

the Otomax used for his skin rash--why the distinction between

betamethasone valerate from the topical ointment and

betamethasone acetate, which was absent from the sample,

wasn't considered by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission

(KHRC) stewards, who disqualified Medina Spirit on Monday,

Feb. 21, suspending Baffert for 90 days.

"Why did we go to Dr. George Maylin?" said Zedan. "To prove

distinction. Why wasn't that distinction considered in the

hearing? Was it just a waste of everyone's time? If you're really

so adamant about avoiding the facts, why did you waste

everyone's time and prolong the agony and suffering for all

these months if you knew you weren't even going to consider

what you were supposed to consider? That's a question mark.

But, I firmly believe again, there are calm minds, there's a lot of

wisdom that will come together."

If, however, the final judgment is that he should be

disqualified--which Zedan said he does not believe will

happen--he said he was ready to accept it.

"If, at the end of the day for whatever reason, Medina will be

disqualified, fine, if that's what the Supreme Court or whoever

the highest court authority rules. But we all need to come

together for this sport that we all love. I'm very objective, and I

have clearly said that at the end of the day, if we get disqualified

by the proper objective panel, whichever that may be, I will take

it on the chin and I will be a big boy about it. But I think once this

case is in the public domain and we've had an impartial

objective judge within the court system, there is no doubt in my

mind that we will win this."

Zedan was equally passionate in his support for his friend,

prompting Luck to ask him if he was able to be objective about

the subject because of their friendship.

"I trust in the integrity of the whole process and I choose to

stand by the greatest trainer the sport has ever witnessed. It's

not my emotional friendship with Bob. I read all sorts of articles.

I know the man, and I know the man's emotions. When Medina

passed away, it was like one of his kids passed away. The man

loves horses. He will never endanger his horses.

"Bob Baffert has been great to me," Zedan continued. "He has

been nothing but great to the sport and he does not deserve all

this misinformation. He does not deserve to be compared to

people whose names I don't even want to mention, because it's

not even proper. This guy loves his job and he's been great at

what he does, and nothing but great to everybody around him.

Do you know how many people in his barn (for whom) he has

saved loved ones and lives? There are stories that you guys

don't even know. He doesn't talk about it. I know. I am his

friend, and it hurts me so much to see a good man's reputation

tarnished as such."

CE CE: A PRINCESS, YEARS IN THE MAKING by Zoe Cadman

They say that some poker players have a Atell,@ a change in

their behavior that can give away how they feel about their

chances of winning a particular hand. Hall of Fame rider Victor

Espinoza says that the 2021 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

winner, Ce Ce (Elusive Quality) is no different.

"Most of the times I ride her, I know before I get to the gate

what kind of a race she's going to run," he said.

"So, did you know in the Breeders' Cup?@ I asked eagerly.

"Oh yes, most definitely,@ he replied. AThe minute she walked

onto the track I was like, 'oh yes,' and I looked at the rest of the

horses and thought, `oh, I feel sorry for you guys!'@

The rest, of course is history. Ce Ce took down the Breeders'

Cup and was crowned champion female sprinter at Santa Anita's

Eclipse Award ceremony Feb. 10, but not before tasting defeat

at the hands of Merneith (American Pharoah) in the GII Santa

Monica S. just days before she was crowned.

I had interviewed CeCe's owner-breeder Bo Hirsch prior to the

Santa Monica and asked him, "Win lose or draw, what has she

left to prove in her 6-year-old year?"

Hirsch was effusive and simply said, "She has nothing to prove

and she owes us nothing. I'm getting old and I love to watch my

horses run. You know, I may not live long enough to watch her

foals run so why not enjoy her another year now?"

This is something the 72-year-old Hirsch echoed in his Eclipse

Award speech, where he said, "I love this business. This is the

greatest sport in the world."

So, to find the key to Ce Ce's longevity, I set off to the Mike

McCarthy barn.

Horses love routine, and in that, champion Ce Ce is no

different. Training every morning with the sunrise at 6:30, she

sets out not to Santa Anita's main track, but to the six-furlong

training track nestled inside the turf course.

It's something McCarthy started a couple of years ago and it

has stuck.

"It's a good walk to and fro, from the training track. It's

something she enjoys and we let her take her time."

So, off we went with her. I followed Ce Ce down into the

tunnel, walking as fast as my oh-too-short legs could to try and

keep up.

Once on the training track, Ce Ce took up her customary

position next to the outrider Camacho and his pony Justin,

enjoying cuddles from her rider Lydio as the early morning sun

cast a long shadow across the track.

I'm pretty sure she would have stood there all day!

AJog one, gallop two.@ These were the instructions handed out

by McCarthy.

Off she went--nothing flashy, just doing her job, three times

around before pulling up with a pat. "She's a trainer's dream,"

explained McCarthy, later that morning. It has been a huge deal

to train a mare like her. She shows up every time, she's all

business, she's all racehorse, from breaking her maiden first

time out, something the stats say shouldn't happen," said a

deadpan McCarthy, "to winning the GI Beholder."

"We got a little sidetracked later in the year," he added. "We

had a hard time finding racetracks she likes. She seems to like it

a little harder and faster. We've kind of gotten away from that a

little bit out here in California, so she's struggled with that a

little bit."

McCarthy went on to elaborate that Ce Ce has got a little picky

in her old age, preferring the more glib race tracks of times gone

by. When pressed about her Breeders' Cup performance, the

ever-reserved trainer perked up.

"Got a perfect set up with Gamine and Bella Sofia in there.

Victor asked the question and she responded. I believe that was

probably as good a Breeders' Cup performance as you would

see on Breeders' Cup day," he said, with just a bit of pride.

As for what happened in the Santa Monica, McCarthy

conceded Baffert led a very good horse over that ran her

eyeballs out. Plus, Ce Ce was coming off a brief layoff, with the

track against her. "But I saw what I needed to see and we will go

from there," he added.

But where?

McCarthy did his best dodge-the-question dance, with the

usual `keep our options open,' followed by a list of logical

choices befitting a champion. "Oaklawn. Keeneland. Could show

up in another country. Could stay here."

"Hold on,@ I said. AAnother country?"

"Well, we are not the only place that holds racing," quipped a

now-smiling McCarthy. "There are races like the Golden

Shaheen in Dubai, or she could even try the grass. We know her

likes and dislikes and will try to play to those for the rest of the

year.@ Cont. p19

Ce Ce cont.

Is there added pressure training a 6-year-old with seemingly

nothing left to prove, I asked?

"There is a little bit of pressure because we want to do right by

her, always. I feel like we are responsible for the effort, not the

outcome. Sometimes, that's beyond our control."

REPORT: UAE OAKS WINNER SHAHAMA TO

JOIN PLETCHER BARN 'TDN Rising Star' Shahama (Munnings), who ran her career

record to a perfect four-for-four with an easy two-length victory

in the G3 UAE Oaks at Meydan Feb. 18, is reportedly set to give

the Mar. 26 G2 UAE Derby a miss and will instead be shipped to

trainer Todd Pletcher to prepare for a start in the GI Longines

Kentucky Oaks May 6. The news was reported in a tweet from

Dubai Racing Channel's Michael Adolphson.

A $425,000 purchase out of the 2021 OBS April Sale, the bald-

faced chestnut, bred by SF Bloodstock, debuted with a nine-

length victory in a seven-furlong event at Meydan Dec. 9 and

was accorded 'Rising Star' status off a visually impressive

2 1/2-length score in a Jan. 1 allowance. Victorious in the Listed

UAE 1000 Guineas Jan. 28, she met with some adversity in the

9 1/2-furlong UAE Oaks, but managed to overcome a poor start

and a bit of a wide trip to remain undefeated.

Owned by KHK Racing and trained in Dubai by Fawzi Nass,

Shahama is a half-sister to two-time Eclipse Award winner

Lookin At Lucky (Smart Strike) and to two-time graded-stakes

winner Kensei (Mr. Greeley). Connections paid the $200

nomination fee to make Shahama eligible for the Oaks at its first

closing stage Feb. 19.

NEW RISING STAR AT SANTA ANITA FOR

QUALITY ROAD

Baoma Corp.'s Ganadora (Quality Road), installed the 6-5

choice in this first go, slugged it out early with So It Would Seem

(Honor Code), but was peerless in the stretch, running away to

win by an impressive 6 1/2-length margin over 2-1 second

choice Lady T (Into Mischief). Mixing it up through a sharp

opening pace in :21.58 and :44.74, the $1-million KEESEP buy

kicked clear turning for home and proved much the best late to

earn 'TDN Rising Star' honors. So It Would Seem faded to

second last. Ganadora is the 11th 'Rising Star' for her sire

Quality Road and the fifth for that stallion hailing from the Bob

Baffert barn. Three of the previous four Baffert-trained Quality

Road 'Rising Stars', Corniche, Roadster and Klimt, have gone on

to be Grade I winners.

The filly is out of Grade III-placed Beloveda (Ghostzapper),

who began her racing career in Poland before being imported to

the States. Gainesway originally secured the mare in partnership

with Michael Hernon for $205,000 at the 2013 FTKFEB sale. Her

2016 Scat Daddy filly, SP Mistress of Love, summoned $1-million

at KEESEP and her 2018 filly Hana Road (Quality Road) was a

$450,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga grad before Ganadora gave the

mare her second seven-figure sale. Gainesway bought out

Hernon at the 2021 FTKFEB sale, where the mare hammered for

$510,000. Beloveda is also responsible for a juvenile filly by

Empire Maker and a yearling filly by Street Sense. She was bred

back to Nyquist.

FANCY COLTS MAKE 4-YEAR-OLD DEBUTS

ON BOTH COASTS

10th-GP, $63K, Alw/OC, 4yo/up, 7f, 5:14 p.m. ET

'TDN Rising Star' First Captain (Curlin) makes his 4-year-old

debut against a relatively accomplished field here. The $1.5-

million FTSAUG yearling kicked off his career three-for-three,

annexing the one-turn-mile GIII Dwyer S. at Belmont in July. He

has been off since finishing third as the favorite in Saratoga's

restricted nine-panel Curlin S. later that month, and trainer Shug

McGaughey told TDN's Steve Sherack recently that the son of

MGSW and MGISP America (A.P. Indy) was given a freshening

without a specific issue or injury.

AThere really wasn't anything the matter with him, I just wasn't

altogether pleased of where I stood with him, so I thought,

'Well, let's just give him some time,'@ McGaughey said. Cont. p2

He continued, ATime helped him a lot. He was at Barry

Eisaman's and he did a great job with him. He got out here and

had a really good bottom in him and he's been breezing ever

since.@

First Captain will take on the likes of GSWs Trophy Chaser

(Twirling Candy) and Dennis' Moment (Tiznow) and stakes

winners Real Talk (Gemologist) and Hello Hot Rod (Mosler).

The Bob Baffert barn has a pair of talented if lightly raced

4-year-olds signed on here in 'TDN Rising Star' Triple Tap (Tapit)

and sale topper Shaaz (Uncle Mo). The former, a Summer Wind

Equine homebred, is a half to none other than Triple Crown

winner and Horse of the Year American Pharoah (Pioneerof the

Nile) and a full to GISW juvenile Chasing Yesterday. He took his

track-and-trip debut almost a year ago, and resurfaced on

Breeders' Cup weekend at Del Mar to clear another condition.

The chestnut was last seen finishing a distant fourth to fellow

Summer Wind-bred Tapit colt and brilliant 'Rising Star' Flightline

in the GI Runhappy Malibu S. Dec. 26.

Michael Lund Petersen's Shaaz (Uncle Mo), meanwhile,

fetched $1.1 million at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale off a

:10 flat breeze. The half-brother to Grade II-winning grasser Azar

(Scat Daddy) from a very deep female family earned a gaudy

105 Beyer Speed Figure when besting another stablemate

narrowly in a maiden event on the Malibu undercard. He

crossed the line second at 3-10 in a first-level optional claimer

Feb. 5, only to be put up by the stewards in a decision that

sparked plenty of dissent on twitter. TJCIS PPs

outings, most recently going an additional sixteenth Jan. 30.

Shedding blinkers for this, the 6-5 shot zoomed to the front from

the rail, doled out splits of :21.85 and :44.38 and kept finding to

prevail by 1 1/4 lengths. Beef Winslow (Honor Code) completed

the exacta. The winner is half to Mei Ling (Empire Maker), MSW

ELECTOR (c, 4, Constitution--Oh Kay See, by Notional) stumbled

badly Dec. 26 on career debut at Santa Anita, finishing last after

a greenly run 6 1/2 panel contest behind next-out winner and

Bob Baffert trainee Shaaz (Uncle Mo). Returning for his 4-year-

old bow here at 5-1, the John Sadler trainee broke fairly amidst

the field and made his way to the rail. Vying for command in a

three-horse line, Elector shook loose coming out of the far turn,

and kicked clear to win by 4 3/4 lengths over American Admiral

(American Pharoah). Cont. p7

while sporting blinkers for the first time. The bay was in

LA MAQUINA (c, 3, Quality Road--Rubies Are Red, by Medaglia

weakening late to be fourth, but improved last out Jan. 15 when

switched to the turf her, finishing a neck second after a stretch

duel. Sent off at 4-1 this time and hustled to get up with the

leaders, La Maquina hooked up with a 70-1 longshot down the

backstretch through a :47.26 half mile. With his early four-

length lead quickly diminishing on the far turn, the grey was

asked for a second wind when 8-5 favorite Growth Capital (War

Front) briefly headed him on the outside in mid-stretch. Battling

gamely, he came back on the rail and turned his challenger away

to win by a half-length in the end. La Maquina has a 2-year-old

ICONIC ADVENTURE (c, 3, Ghostzapper--Skylighter {MGSW,

Belmont in late October, but failed to fire in his next outing

before bouncing back to be third in a one-mile Aqueduct heat

Dec. 18 won by subsequent GIII Withers S. scorer Early Voting

(Gun Runner). Let go at 10-1 while drawn outside and racing for

the first time on Lasix, the Godolphin homebred was hung wide

in the short run to the first turn. He was unhurried by Junior

Alvarado to sit towards the back and three deep, then crept

closer midway down the backside. The bay continued to

advance as one of many in with a chance heading for home,

joined the fray out wide as they straightened and out-finished

four other foes to notch a neck decision from fellow 10-1 shot

Magia Nera (Bernardini). The winner is half to Sky Painter

attempt to get another horse to load into the gate--for a hot

barn that does good particularly good work with turf sprinters.

The bay showed good cruising speed to press from third, but

briefly seemed run off her feet around the bend before finding

her footing again. Confidently handled to midstretch, she found

another gear when given her cue and accelerated willingly to

kick away a three-length graduate. Race favorite Aboukir Bay

trouble. The winner, who hails from the extended female family
