I was truly honored and humbled by all the well wishes and blessings that I received. I want all of you to know that Erica and I felt like we had really become a part of the Temple Beth Torah family. Thank you so much to everyone who made it happen. Two things occurred during that special Shabbat Installaon service that were parcularly special and moving. First, the prayerfulness that was a part of our sanctuary as we experienced Shabbat with one another was nothing less than awe -inspiring. Everyone could feel the presence of the Divine as our hearts spoke out as a community of Jewish souls. I remember closing my eyes during the Shema and hearing a beauful chorus of voices singing in unison as Cantor led us in the prayer. This experience reoccurred throughout the service every me we liſted our voices in unison. We are blessed to be able to connect to God each me we reach out as individuals, but there is something miraculous and marvelous when we feel that special connecon as we do so together. It’s almost as if an extraor- dinary and unexplainable spark sets in moon a surge of joy and peacefulness that we feel when we pray with one another. I definitely felt it that Friday night, and for all who were there, I hope you sensed it too. Secondly, the evening reminded me of a teaching from our Talmud: “It is not the place that accords honor to a person; rather it is the person who accords honor to the place.” (Taanis 21b) Our synagogue, and our sanctuary in parcular, holds a special place of honor, it’s true. But it’s the people who enter into the sanctuary, who come together in comradery and friendship, that give that “place” it’s true honor. The Shabbat Installaon service was a place of kavod – honor – because of the people who filled its pews. The more people who fill the walls of the sanctuary and our synagogue, the more honor we receive from our Creator. That Friday night, the sanctuary became more than just a room. It became a trans- formed space of love and compassion, wherein the honor of God’s presence was bestowed on each and every one of us. Thank you for making the evening such a special one! Dear Congregants,

Words cannot adequately express the deep appreciation I feel for the wonderful weekend that was afforded to me and my family as I was installed as your new rabbi. I was truly honored and humbled by all the well wishes and blessings that I received. I want all of you to know that Erica and I felt like we had really become a part of the Temple Beth Torah family. Thank you so much to everyone who made it happen.

Two things occurred during that special Shabbat Installation service that were particularly special and moving. First, the prayerfulness that was a part of our sanctuary as we experienced Shabbat with one another was nothing less than awe-inspiring. Everyone could feel the presence of the Divine as our hearts spoke out as a community of Jewish souls. I remember closing my eyes during the Shema and hearing a beautiful chorus of voices singing in unison as Cantor led us in the prayer. We are blessed to be able to connect to God each time we reach out as individuals, but there is something miraculous and marvelous when we feel that special connection as we do so together. It’s almost as if an extraor-dinary and unexplainable spark sets in motion a surge of joy and peacefulness that we feel when we pray with one another. I definitely felt it that Friday night, and for all who were there, I hope you sensed it too.

Secondly, the evening reminded me of a teaching from our Talmud: “It is not the place that accords honor to a person; rather it is the person who accords honor to the place.” (Taanis 21b) Our synagogue, and our sanctuary in particular, holds a special place of honor, it’s true. But it’s the people who enter into the sanctuary, who come together in comradery and friendship, that give that “place” it’s true honor. The Shabbat Installation service was a place of kavod – honor – because of the people who filled its pews. Parents and Grandparents,

Have you been listening to your little ones sing “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and “Let it Go!” incessantly for the past year? As the Frozen phenomenon continues to take the world by (snow)storm, I am thrilled to announce that this year, even Purim is freezing over as Temple Beth Torah presents Frozen! The Purim Spiel. A colleague of mine sent the script down from New Jersey, and after I’ve made a few minor edits and get my ducks in a row, I’ll make an audition announcement. Please check your weekly email this month for the notice.

Now, historically, our cast for the Purim spiel has been holding at about 20 cast mem-bers. Given how much our kids here at TBT love Frozen, I’m asking that you encourage your kids to come join us this year. I will happily rehearse the large group musical numbers first so that the younger cast members do not have to stay for the entirety of the rehearsals.

Purim this year is on Wednesday, March 4th. Our celebration will begin at Temple Beth Torah with our second Triangle Dinner where all of the food is shaped like Haman’s hat! We will then adjourn to the sanctuary for the reading of Megilat Esther, the scroll of Esther, and then we will conclude with our Frozen spiel (written to be under 30 minutes). The entire evening is guaranteed to be a blast for all ages. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to send me an email at [email protected].

One more thing: I ask for forgiveness in advance for the increase in Frozen lyrics being sung in your house-hold. If you have had any adverse reactions in the past, you may want to invest in a set of earplugs.

Dear Friends.

Traditionally, as we begin a new year, we reflect on the past and make plans for the future. As we look back, we see that 2014 was a pivotal year for the temple: the year we welcomed our new spiritual leader, Rabbi Rosenkranz! As we look for-ward and begin to make plans for the new year, I hope you will find a meaningful way to include Temple Beth Torah in your life.

The temple is a sacred community where we can inspire and engage each other, share tradition and ritual, and be lifelong learners. At Temple Beth Torah we care about and support each other, value our diversity, and practice living according to Jewish values. Together, as a temple community, we work to-wards repairing the world for our generation and generations to come.

With Rabbi Rosenkranz we can continue to cultivate the sa-cred, as we learn about everything Jewish, from our heritage to our holy texts, affirm our relationship with Israel, and expand our worship experiences.

At Temple Beth Torah, we value Jewish literacy, beautiful ser-vices, and meaningful relationships. My wish for you in this new year is to find inspiration here with us: to bring spirituality into your daily life, to nourish your intellectual passions, and to enjoy a warm and supportive extended family.

Our preschool rings in the secular New Year with our own new beginnings. We are delighted to welcome five new families to our preschool community, who join our return-ing families. We look forward to sharing the best of our preschool program with these new friends. The new calendar year also ushers in the savings period for early registration for the next school year. On Wednesday, January 14, 2015, Temple members, along with current and alumni families, will have the opportunity to register for the next school year at current preschool rates. We will extend that benefit to the general community begin-ning Monday, February 2, 2015, continuing through February 15, 2015. After that date,

both returning and new registrants will be subject to the new preschool rates. Please note: registration for our youngest age classes, Play & Learn (our version of Mommy & Me, for children ages 15 months to 2 years) and Music Together© (for children birth to age 5) is continu-ous and ongoing.

The coming month will bring exciting new areas of interest to stimulate curiosity and promote learning in all of the classrooms. A continuing focus in the school is Gemilut Chasadim, (Acts of Lovingkindness). A point of great emphasis of the Fall and Winter holidays is the lesson of giving to others. The generosity of our preschool families fostered a very successful food drive which began in November, and continued throughout the Winter holidays. In addition, many children brought in gifts for the preschool toy drive to benefit the Gladys Alpert Jewish Family & Children’s Services Agency. The PreK classes (armed with Chanukah cards created by them and the 3’s classes) brought tears of joy to the residents (and staff) at Morselife Geriatric Center when they sang Chanukah songs and chanted the Chanukah blessings dur-ing their recent field trip. Additionally, we promote these lessons of Gemilut Hasadim and Tzedakah each week dur-ing our Friday morning Shabbat Program. Whether the children bring in coins or canned food, they are learning

through action the early lessons of social justice.

The holiday of Tu B’Shevat will give us another opportunity to teach our children ways to take care of the world. For the holiday, all of the classes will explore the concepts of recycling and replanting. Their creative energy will be displayed in the free form sculptures the children create in the classroom from recyclable materials. Additionally, you are invited to join us in the playground on Wednesday, February 4, for our annual ceremonial tree planting. Each year, the Volunteer Parent Organization (VPO) donates a tree that becomes part of the playground area. Each child will have an opportunity to shovel dirt and

take ownership of the newest tree. Our immediate world is further enhanced by our thriving butterfly, herb and vegetable gardens, which provide an optimal venue for teaching about nature. The children till the soil, plant the seedlings, and water their gardens. They truly delight in the “fruits” of their labor. From sculptures to seedlings, the children learn about the many ways to take care of our earth and to share its many gifts.

We are very proud of our continued partnerships with community members who bring parts of their world to our children. Last month the threes classes enjoyed a visit from Deputy Ira Peskowitz. This month the children will learn about construction from Mike Lent and receive a fire fighter demonstration from Jeff Siegel. In February, Ginger, from Dr. Lisa Feldman’s office will provide all the classes with a playful program on dental care; and, the PreK classes will be visited by Gabe Margasak for a program on the Everglades. Our oldest preschool groups recently visited Whole Foods, as a culmination to their nutrition unit in December. This month, those children are looking forward to an exciting field trip to Wellington Community High School, where they will be treated to a band performance to enhance their unit on musical instruments. We also extend a special thank you to Amy Bergman from the Commission for Jewish Education and the PJ Library® for collaborating with us for the very successful Tot Shabbat/Chanukah Program presented last month.

On behalf of the entire staff, I would like to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2015!

One of the first activities our 7th graders take part in is decorating plain sugar cookies. Each student receives their own cookie on a paper plate. We provide different color icings and instruct the students to have fun and decorate their cookie. They are instructed, however, NOT to eat their cookie. They pass the icing around and each student creates their own designs. After the cookies are all decorated I take a picture of each student holding their cookie. Each student then places their cookie in front of them and I proceed to choose a few and either tell them that it’s not a very “pretty” design and doesn’t fit in with the rest of the cookies or that their cookie is exceptionally designed and could be anyone’s favorite. I then lead them through a discussion and someone finally realizes where I have been leading them…that we are all made up of the same “ingredients,” although we all look, act and have major differences. The one thing that is the same with all of us, however, is that we are all created in the image of God. I take their pictures and create a poster, which is now on a bulletin board in the hallway of the school. February is Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month. The Religious Action Center, of the URJ, is the organization that guides this event. RAC describes this annual event as, “a month dedicated to learning more about disabilities, disa-bility rights, how we can increase inclusion in our own communities and how we can improve the civil rights of peo-ple with disabilities across the country and the world.” Three years ago I had one of our classes take a tour of our building and identify areas that they felt needed improve-ment to be more inclusive. There are 2 mezuzot on the entrance doors to our temple. You will notice that one is placed quite lower than the other. This is so that those individuals who are in a wheelchair, or have trouble reaching the one placed higher, can still perform the mitzvah of touching a mezuzah upon entering a building. I am in the process of taking webinars through the URJ about inclusiveness of students in religious school. My staff and I will be looking into ways in which we can affect the level of inclusiveness in our classrooms. We are all aware about teaching using all modalities - visual, tactile, and auditory. The addition of using iPads in our classrooms has been an extremely positive way in which some of our students who are challenged have increased their learning in a positive way. I have shadows and aides in some of our classrooms to assist those students who require the added support so that all students have the same opportunity to be successful in our classrooms. One thing I have learned is that our language needs to be changed. One should always put the person first when describing individuals with disabilities. First and foremost, people are people; secondly, they may happen to experience one or more functional limitations. Hence, they should be referred to as “students with disabilities,” rather than “disabled students.” To assist all students, our revised Hebrew program will allow our staff to more easily adapt this curriculum to all learning styles. I discovered a book over the summer called, “Aleph Bet Yoga,” that our youngest grades are using to form their bodies into letters of the Aleph Bet. Our revised Hebrew program, starting in January, is accessible from computers and iPad/tablets. There is also an auditory component to many games and lessons. I encourage everyone to be aware of their surroundings and to make suggestions, where appropriate, so that their environment can be made more inclusive. Who knows what our 7th graders will discover this year that will make our synagogue more inclusive? We will certainly be noting, in each classroom, how this enhanced Hebrew curriculum will affect all our students in their ability to learn this material. One thing is certain - every student will know that they are all created in the image of God. Through expanding our knowledge about both disabilities and technology, we will become better teachers and our students will become more knowledgeable about their Judaism and know that they are each special in their own way - no matter how they are “decorated.”

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and we look forward to what is in store for 2015. But before we talk about 2015, let’s review some of Sisterhood’s actions around Temple. We have generously provided dreidels and gelt for our preschool friends and a box of Chanukah candles for each religious school student. We contributed to the Denim & Diamonds Gala by sponsoring the DJ and dance floor for the event [a great time was had by all]. In 2014 we also contributed $2500 towards the new High Holy Day siddurs [prayer books that you too can purchase and dedicate]. Also, in 2014 we’ve had some very successful programs, including Dinner in the Sukkah, a Member-ship Mixer, BINGOtini and Sisterhood Shabbat. We’d like to thank Barbara Barashick and Lu Powell [and the people who chipped in] for their tremendous efforts in bringing these programs to life! Programs to look forward to in 2015 include Sisterhood/Brotherhood Bowling event on Saturday evening, January 24 at 7PM at Revolutions at City Place and we’ll have our paid-up membership dinner on Wednesday, February 11, (an invitation to follow). And don’t forget, our Women’s Passover Seder is on Wednesday, March 25, 2015.

Please remember to support our Judaica Boutique during Religious School hours on Sunday mornings ,Tuesday after-noons, Wednesday mornings from 9-11 am, and by appointment, too! We have beautiful merchandise for every taste. Also, we have the order forms for next year’s Mahjong cards in the Boutique. Just fill out all the important information, turn in the form and your prepayment and we’ll accept forms for all cards through the end of January. You can make your check payable to TBT Sisterhood. Then, the National Mahjong League sends the 2015 card di-rectly to your home address that you have provided to us. Good luck and “may the Jokers be with you!”

We hope everyone has a great start to 2015 and we look forward to seeing so many of you at the Sisterhood events this year! If you haven’t joined Sisterhood yet, you’re always welcome to join us by making a donation of $36 to TBT Sisterhood!

Shalom always,

Andi Parker & Heather Andrews, Co-Presidents of Temple Beth Torah Sisterhood

A Note About WRJ

Three members of our Sisterhood participated in the WRJ SE District Biennial in October in Parkland, FL. Here’s a personal sentiment from Barbara Nussbaum as a first-time WRJ conference attendee:

I arrived at the WRJ Biennial Conference at the Marriot , Parkland Florida at 8:30 A.M. with Joy Pitterman. We left our belongings at the Front Desk and went straight to Registration and our first meetings which began promptly at 9 A.M. My first conference, a perfect choice for a new Sisterhood Board member and first time WRJ Conference attendee, was "WRJ 101." The leader was Blair Marks, President of Southeast Region WRJ and a truly remarkable woman. I learned that WRJ was founded in 1913. Since that time, the organization has been doing things to make progressive Jewish women's voices heard in order to make a difference in the world.

Having written and reported about the conference to our own Sisterhood Board, I just have some thoughts that come from the heart and won't appear in any report. My profound THANKS to our Sisterhood Board for sending me to the convention. It was an enriching and life changing experience. I felt welcomed as soon as I arrived at the WRJ Southeastern Conference and valued as a participant. I was a "sister" to some pretty remarkable people. The lead-ership of the Southern Region are some very poised and accomplished people, including our own Rabbi Rosenkranz' mother.

I really learned a lot of useful and interesting things in 2 days. But mostly, I learned that I am a member of a National Sisterhood whose work affects Progressive Jewish women far and wide. It has done so for more than 100 years and I want to help it do so for another 100 years. We should never be wondering what they do with our dues money, but how on earth they do all that they accomplish! Please feel free to go to wrj.org and learn more about this remarkable organization and how our support of WRJ impacts Reform Judaism around the world!

A life changing experience - Lara Tessler TiBToFTY member and NFTY STR Regional Song leader

I never expected to fall in love with something so deeply until I found NFTY-STR. The North American Federation of Temple Youth, Southern Tropical Region, or, NFTY-STR as most people call it, is where I found my true passion, and myself. As an incoming freshman in TiBToFTY, I enjoyed going to cafe bagel Sundays, youth events, and services. I had always known what NFTY was, but never truly understood it. The opportunity came to attend my first NFTY event, and I was ecstatic. Temple Beth Torah hosted Spring Kallah 2011. It was my first, and my brother's last event which made it all the more meaningful. I arrived to services that Friday night excited and nervous at the same. Services were amazing. The sanctuary had never been so alive. Three hundred teens sang, danced and prayed together. At the end of the night, six girls came home with me, and were my roommates for the weekend. I later came to realize that these six girls were just a few of the role models that I looked up to for years to come. Saturday morning came, and all of NFTY-STR traveled to Lion Country Safari for a day of fun. We had services and lunch, and then song session. Song session began, and I was mesmerized by the song leader in front of me. I was captivated by his power to bring together the football player, the bookworm, the prom queen, and the hippie. He created a community singing with one voice. After the twenty minutes of song session were finished, I instantly knew I had to be a regional song leader too, so I could create that sense of community with that same passion for Judaism. With much determination, my dream came true three years later. Spring Kallah 2014 was one that I will never forget. I heard my name announced, and I was a NFTY-STR regional song leader! These past four years in NFTY have been an incredible journey full of love and friendship. The relationships I have made are ones that I know will carry me through my future adult years. I encourage any of our Temple youth to become active members of TiBToFTY and NFTY-STR. I am positive that they too, will come to experience their own extraordinary NFTY journey.

Rabbi Rosenkranz joined Temple Beth Torah on August 1, 2014. Many members have met and worked with him since then. On Friday night, December 5, 2015, Rabbi Rosenkranz was officially installed with the most moving, sacred and beautiful service. Rabbi Aaron Panken, President of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Reli-gion, was the guest speaker. Other speakers included Rabbi Erica Rosenkranz, Sara Marcus, Alan Herzlin and Can-tor Carrie Barry. Rabbi Robert Silvers, Chief Rabbi at Congregation B’nai Israel in Boca Raton, led the most heartfelt and moving installation.

On Saturday, December 6th, we really celebrated at the Denim and Diamonds Gala with great food, drink, music and fun. We thank all who attended and all who were sponsors.

The Committee for this event included Andi and Ron Parker, Lu Powell, Kate Lester, Marcia Weber, Jenny Levin, Jennifer Goldstein, Barbara Barashick, Suzi Brawer and Diane Marks. So much was accomplished in just 2 months of planning because everyone on the committee took control of their areas and worked perfectly as a team.

The TBT Annual picnic, sponsored by the Membership Committee, was held the next day. About 200 congregants enjoyed the food and games and our youngest members enjoyed the bounce house. Sponsors were as follows:

Diamond: Alesia and Steve Kaye, Judy Rosenkranz Ruby: Irene and Joel Levine, Phyllis and Ivan Seidenberg Topaz: Vicki and Brian Buckstein, Jill and Josh Cohen, Ellen and Dr. Steven Miller, Andi and Ron Parker, Lorena and Richard Powell, Rabbis Erica and Andrew Rosenkranz, Jane and Dr. Fred Shuster, Marcia and Scott Weber Linda and Dr. Walter Woolf
