When I first came in contact with these pieces, I immediately felt that they offered a sincere and direct window into Janek's soul. I am delighted by the challenge to perform the music's abrupt changes from recurring moments of tranquility and bliss to forceful interjections that border on insanity exactly as they were written." Danae Drken BIS SACD 1756 Label Code 419 Price Code P BRAHMS SYMPHONY NO. 1 Symphony No.1 in C minor, Op.68 Liebeslieder-Walzer from Op.52 & Op.65 (orchestrated by the composer) Hungarian Dances Nos 1, 3 & 10 (orch. by the composer) ARTISTS: Swedish Chamber Orchestra / Thomas Dausgaard

A weighty symphony, swaying Viennese waltzes and fiery Hungarian dances make up the colourful programme when Thomas Dausgaard and his Swedish Chamber Orchestra engage with Johannes Brahms in Opening Doors, the teams acclaimed series of Romantic orchestral composers. Johannes Brahms was only twenty years old when Robert Schumann hailed him as one whose genius gave rise to the greatest symphonic hopes. It is therefore striking that he didnt complete his First Symphony until more than twenty years later, in 1876 even though the earliest sketches for it date back to 1855. Brahms who once said that he constantly heard the giant Beethoven marching behind him had such a deep respect for what his great predecessor had achieved with the genre that he for a long time doubted that he would ever be able to write a symphony of his own by the time he did, it must have been gratifying to him that it was hailed as Beethovens Tenth. While working on the symphony, Brahms composed his Op.52, the cycle Liebeslieder-Walzer for piano four-hands (and song ad libitum). He kept the forces as flexible as possible: the waltzes were performable with or without voices; if used, the vocal parts could be sung either by soloists or by a choir. Even so, he was soon asked for another version, for choir and orchestra. Brahms initially rejected this idea, but finally agreed to make a partial orchestration: selecting eight of the Op.52 waltzes, he supplemented them with an early version of one of the not yet published Neue Liebeslieder-Walzer, Op.65. Around the same time, he was asked to orchestrate another collection of dances composed for piano four-hands: his first set of Hungarian Dances, which had quickly become a great hit. It took him four years to comply with this wish, and even then he only accepted to orchestrate three of the dances, leaving the field open for various other arrangers (including Dvok) to satisfy the demand for more.

BIS SACD 1827 Label Code 419 Price Code P CHRISTIAN POLTERA PLAYS SAMUEL BARBER Samuel Barber: Concerto for Cello and Orchestra Op. 22 (1945) Sonata for Cello and Piano, Op. 6 (1932) Adagio for Strings, Op. 11 (1936) ARTISTS: Christian Poltera, cello, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra / Andrew Litton, Kathryn Stott, piano.

On previous discs, Christian Poltra has combined concertos with chamber works by composers such as Frank Martin and Arthur Honegger. The recipe proved highly successful, resulting in more rounded portraits of each composer, as well as of the performer himself: while Poltras performance of Martins Cello Concerto was described in Gramophone as having an inspirational intensity to compare with the celebrated Du Pr/Barbirolli recording of the Elgar Concerto, the reviewer in Fanfare praised him for playing with the kind of semi-arrogant, swashbuckling carefree attitude that suits Honnegger to a tee. As he now proceeds to Samuel Barber some twenty years younger than both Martin and Honegger Poltra opens his programme with the Cello Concerto, tailored especially for the Georgian-born cellist Raya Garbousova in 1945. The 25-minute long work is one of only three concertos by Barber, and is remarkable for the way in which he balances out the natural lyric expressiveness of his earlier music with a more urgent, acerbic style, highly rhythmic and intense. That lyricism and expressivity is of course most famously heard in the enormously popular Adagio for strings, which closes the disc in a performance by the strings of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under Andrew Litton. But before that, Christian Poltra and his regular chamber-music partner Kathryn Stott gives a performance of the Sonata for Cello and Piano, composed while Barber was still a student, but brilliantly written for the two instruments.

BIS SACD 2013 Label Code 419 Price Code P EMILIA AMPER - TROLLFAGELN ARTISTS: Emilia Ampera, nyckelharpa & vocals, Johan Hedin: nyckelharpa / Anders Lfberg: cello / Dan Svensson: percussion, guitar, vocals / Olle Linder: percussion, guitar / Helge Andreas Norbakken: percussion / Strings from the Trondheim Soloists

Emilia Amper, one of Swedens most exciting young folk musicians, is also one of the finest nyckelharpa players in the world today. (In fact, she can even boast of being a World Champion on the instrument, a title she won in 2010.) For Trollfgeln, her first solo disc, she has devised a programme which demonstrates the numerous facets of her own musical personality, and of her instrument. With its roots stretching back to medieval Europe, the nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle) almost died out in the middle of the twentieth century, but has made a remarkable comeback and is attracting an increasing number of performers in Sweden and around the world. Firmly grounded in Swedish traditional music, Emilia Amper has also worked with musicians from many other backgrounds, and regards folk music as a common international language, and a way of combining tradition with spontaneous improvisation in a playful reflection of our own times. Consequently, on Trollfgeln (The Magic Bird) a traditional dance tune such as Bredals Nckapolska stands next to Emilias own take on rock music, Kapad (Hijacked). Similarly, Ut i mrka natten (Into the Dark Night), a song about budding love that shes written and composed herself, is contrasted with Herr Lager och skn fager, her setting of a poem from the late 1800s describing the sad outcome of a love affair. Solos are mixed with settings in which Emilia is joined by a string ensemble from the famous Norwegian chamber orchestra the Trondheim Soloists, or by another well-known virtuoso on the nyckelharpa, Johan Hedin, as well as by some of her regular collaborators: Anders Lfberg, Dan Svensson and Olle Linder.

BIS SACD - 2017 Label Code 419 Price Code P THEN RENAISSANCE AIRS AND DANCES Arrangements for Brass Quintet of Francisco de la Torre: Danza Alta sobre La Spagna Tielman Susato: Basse danse Mon Desir; Gaillarde II / Allemaigne VIII; Danse du Roy; Pavane Mille Regretz; Bergette Sans Roch; Passe et Medio; Gaillarde XV Le Tout Carlo Gesualdo: Tu muccidi, o crudele; Tamo, mia vita; Dolcissima mia vita John Dowland: The Earl of Essex Galiard; Semper Dowland semper Dolens; Lachrim The Frog Galiard; If my complaints ; Sir John Smith his Almain; The King of Denmarks Galiard; M. The brass quintet as we know it is a modern constellation, but ensembles of wind instruments, involving shawms and sackbuts, were a staple before the Renaissance had even begun. Every princely court had its players, and soon every decent-sized town across Europe would follow. The music that such groups played would have varied from the ceremonial to more lightweight material, such as popular dances and settings of chansons. Arrangements of music of this kind still form an important part of the repertoire of most brass ensembles, including Stockholm Chamber Brass. Having earned international recognition for their several recordings of resolutely contemporary works, the five members here return to their roots, in a varied programme which mixes dances from Tielman Susato's famous Danserye collection, lute pieces by John Dowland, five-part madrigals by Carlo Gesualdo and excerpts from operas by Monteverdi. The disc opens with a fiery version of Francisco de la Torre's Danza alta sobre La Spagna, with trumpets that seem to announcing the start of a joust the same trumpets that in Pur ti miro, the closing love duet from Monteverdis L'incoronazione de Poppea, express the most tender feelings for each other. A set of French chansons includes the drinking-song Tourdion, a perennial favourite, while the melancholy of Dowland's Lachrimae is clothed in the mellowest sounds imaginable. The arrangements are by present and former members of the Stockholm Chamber Brass as well as by musicians with whom they have collaborated closely, including the trombone virtuoso Christian Lindberg.

BIS SACD 2047 Label Code 419 Price Code D BRAHMS AND HANDEL VARIATIONS Johannes Brahms: Piano Sonata No.3 in F minor, Op.5; Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op.24 ARTISTS: Jonathan Plowright, piano It was in October 1853 that the 20-year-old Johannes Brahms completed his Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, while staying with Robert and Clara Schumann in Dsseldorf. The work had occupied him for some months at least since the summer of the same year, when he had encountered Franz Liszt, and had heard his recently completed B minor Sonata. Strictly speaking, he may only have heard parts of it: according to some reports, Brahms fell asleep during the performance It is tempting to see the younger mans sonata as a response to Liszts work, but whatever the case may be, its heroic scale, unconventional layout and high quality made it one of the most impressive sonatas since those of Beethoven and Schubert. Significantly, Brahms never wrote another piano sonata, as if he had said as much as he wanted to say in that genre. Instead he would go on to compose in more concentrated formats, but he also wrote a series of large-scale sets of variations, among which the Handel Variations must be considered his crowning achievement. Completed in September 1861 and dedicated to Clara Schumann, the work shows Brahms at the height of his powers, confirming his position as the preeminent preserver and representative of tradition. In fact even Wagner saw its significance when Brahms played it to him, commenting that it showed what could still be done with the old forms by someone who knew how to use them. Performing these landmarks in the19th-century literature for solo piano is the British pianist Jonathan Plowright, hailed in Gramophone as one of the finest living pianists, and here making his dbut on BIS.

MUSICAPHON SACD 56942 (2 CD Set) Label Code 247 Price Code B ARTHUR HONEGGER (1892-1955) COMPLETE SYMPHONIES Throughout his life as a composer, Arthur Honnegger, born in 1892 in L eHavre, France, as the son of Swiss parents, combined within himself the characteristics of the French- and German speaking cultural circles, which made him one of the most appealing musicians of his time. Manysidedness and openness with respect to the most varied styles, the desire and the skill to build on the (German-Romantic) tradition, as well as the courage to take up new themes and forms distinguish his oeuvre, which he created primarily in Paris, his permanent place of residence since 1913. He was among the six composers w ho in a curious way became members of a supposedly programmatic group, for ther establishment of the Groupe des Six came abouot more of less coincidentally. In fact, Honegger abstained from the Groupe des Sixs joint theoretic statements, yet participated in mutual projects such as the collective ballet Les Maries de la tour Eiffel (1929/30). By and large, he proved to be an artist who could productively work together with the most diverse personalities including movie producers, radio authors, playwrights of the most disparate provenance, or composers of the moset varying stylistic directions. From youth onwards, he was influenced most stongly by Richard Wagner, Max Reger, and Richard Strauss, thus by German late-Romantic music. The focus of his attention was the detailed and serious involvement with each individual instrument, as was best to be achieved in chamber music. At the same time, however, he had a sense for the provocative and unconventional, as he demonstrated in his programmatic orchestral works Pacific 231 (1923) and Rugby (1928), or in his film scores. With the titles relating to the modern world, they quickly became famous. Honeegger cultivated within himself a mixture of enfant terrible and solid craftsmanship, which made him to an- if not the- outstanding composer in the circle of the Six. Everything centres on love in The labyrinth of hope, sorrow, optimism, disappointment and joy. This music is a small selection of the utterly incalculable amount of printed music that appeared between 1610 and 1640. At the sonic centre is the "chitarra espanola" which was explicitly conceived as the accompanying instrument for all the pieces; during these years, it began its soaring flight which has continued up to the present day.

ACCENT 24247 Label Code 086 Price Code F BERNHARD MOLIQUE: VIOLIN CONCERTOS NO. 3 & 6 Violin Concerto No. 3 in D minor op. 10 Violin Concerto No. 6 in E minor op. 30 The virtuoso violinist Bernhard Molique (18021869) was what is today called a child prodigy. At the age of fifteen he performed violin concertos of Kreutzer and Rode in Munich; at 18 he was appointed concertmaster there and, at the age of 24, took up a position as concertmaster in Stuttgart, where he remained for almost a quarter of a century. This successful career was rounded off by a professorship at the Royal Academy in London. Contemporary critics praised the clarity, grace and purity of his playing, placing him on a par with Paganini. Anton Steck one of the leading German baroque violinists with a weakness for the romantics has taken on the task of changing this state of affairs. He has gone into the archive and dug up the violin concertos of Molique. Having freed them from the dust of decades, he is now presenting with the support of Larpa festante (on historical instruments) conducted by Christoph Spering two concertos that are not only able to convince listeners with their demanding, virtuoso violin parts, but can also surprise them with their completely new treatment of the orchestra. Unfortunately we know absolutely nothing about the life of Charles Doll. Not even his approximate birth and death dates are known. From his six collections of instrumental works published between 1737 and 1754 we can logically infer that he was a Frenchman, a viola da gamba virtuoso, and a composer. The chronic dearth of further information about this musicians is evidently the reason why music historians have either completely passed him by or relegated him to mere footnote, in the shadow of his contemporaries Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray who are generally regarded as representing the best and technically most difficult works for viola da gamba. Petr Wagner get Doll's music out of his undeserved shadowy existence. ARS 38519 Label Code 448 Price Code F SANGERLIEBE, HOCH UND HERRLICH. Martin Luthers reformation of ecclesiastical music by means of his own hymns, the transformation of Catholic liturgical elements and domestic music practice were echoed in regionally-determined song books or manuscripts. Luthers hymns furthermore served as models for personal religious rewritings, the so-called contrafacts. Zu Gottes Ehr und deinem Trost includes contrafacts of Luther hymns by Lower Saxon, Pomeranian and related noble houses from two hymnals (1586/1592) published by the famous printing press at Barth and from a manuscript by Elisabeth of Calenberg. The hymn Gelobet seistu Jesu Christ, the text of which came from the convent at Medingen and rewritten in part by Luther, derives from the Witzendorff manuscript at the Lneburg Council Library, while the Magnificat, which documents the survival of Catholic elements in the religiosity of the Reformation, comes from the Barth hymnals as well as a rare cantional (Wittenberg 1573) preserved in the Barth Church Library as well as the convent at Isenhagen. Likewise discovered in the Barth hymnals as well as the cantional: a passion in song form as a further document of early Passions, against the backdrop of which the great Bach Passions appear in a new light.

Overture No.4 in d minor Duet Se Freundschaft, edles Band for Soprano, Alto, String and B.c. ARTISTS: Miriam Feuersinger, Sopran Franz Vitzthum, Countertenor Barczi/Capricornus Consort Base Philipp Heinrich Erlebach is one of those composers who was utterly forgotten by history. Originally from East Frisia, he arrived at the court of Rudolstadt in Thuringia at the age of 24 to serve as music director, remaining there for the rest of his life. This was why he was forgotten: during the course of history, the lustre of the court faded and the collection of over 2500 works by himself and others, amassed by Erlebach during the course of his life, was destroyed by fire. Thus this once significant composer "from the Province" faded from memory. Only a few works by Erlebach have survived, but these give an indication of what artistic treasures have most likely been lost. With the present CD, the Capricornus Consort of Basel is making a first attempt to introduce a representative crosssection of those works of Erlebach that are still within grasp. They are strongly influenced by the French style, as is particularly evident in the two grand OvertureSuites which bear the mark of Lully. As a contrast, the Ensemble performs three secular arias sung by countertenor Franz Vitzthum and soprano Miriam Feuersinger. In the concluding duet, the two voices attain such a fantastic harmony that one can hardly distinguish precisely which of them is singing.

Great devotion was directed at San Gennaro, in the belief that he would ward off further evils: a richlyadorned chapel in Napless cathedral was dedicated to him and provided with its own musical ensemble, and a stream of composers (often pupils of the great Francesco Provenzale) such as Cristofaro Caresana, Nicola Fago and Gaetano Veneziano worked there. Central to the programme of I Turchini, prepared by Florio and Dinko Fabris, are performances of Fagos fourpart Stabat Mater and Caresanas canzona Sirene festose. There is a rare outing also for a motet, Antra valles Divo plaudant, written by the young Domenico Scarlatti three of whose string sinfonias are also included here when he was one of the organists in the Real Cappella; musicians in Naples regularly moved in and out of different ensembles, then as now. A booklet essay by Fabris himself splendidly underpins the popular traditions and musical and religious colour surrounding San Gennaro in a Naples still alive today; moreover, an evocation brought to potent life by the performances of Florio, with his singers and instrumentalists of I Turchini. GLOSSA 922801 Label Code 119 Price Code F GESUALDO LA COMPAGNIA DEL MADRIGALE SIXTH BOOK OF MADRIGALS To sense the emotional charge coursing through Carlo Gesualdo at the time when he was composing his Sixth Book of Madrigals, there is no better starting point than a thrilling new recording being issued on GLOSSA from La Compagnia del Madrigale. Some of the finest singers in the madrigal repertoire today including Giuseppe Maletto, Daniele Carnovich and Rossana Bertini, and they have been refining their a cappella artistry over more than twenty years with groups such as La Venexiana and Concerto Italiano now restore humanness, warmth, pictorial beauty and richness to one of the most complex cycles in all music. This marks the groups triumphant entry onto a label which has always made the exploration of the Italian madrigal repertory one of its cornerstones. Allied to the ensembles musical reading is a reevaluation of the essence of the madrigalism of Gesualdo (the Prince of Venosa) by Marco Bizzarini in an absorbing accompanying essay, which draws upon many reactions to the music made during the composers own lifetime. Bizzarini highlights the extraordinary beauty, the intense expression of the sentiments and the mastery of counterpoint in Gesualdos 23 canaps of caviar (as Stravinsky termed them). This new interpretation and its wealth of nuances offered by La Compagnia del Madrigale majestically surmounts all the dissonances and difficulties in these madrigals to lay bare the expressive intensity of the music. Graced by an attractive cover design, wholly in keeping with standards of the house, this new recording of Gesualdos Sixth Book is a joy to behold and read, as well as to listen to. Half-empty glasses on the table. A few rays of sunlight peek through the white curtains and gradually bathe the room in a golden light. Drowsy, the young woman writhes, stretches her arms, searches for the dress that still lies on the floor. Day approaches. Parting is in the air. But her sweetheart will not let her go yet. John Dowland carries us off to this ambience with his song Sweete, stay awhile. Sweete stay a while, why will you rise? asks the first line, The day breakes not, it is my heart, / To thinke that you and I must part. It is wonderful how the melody caresses the tender words. And how the blisseful kisses in the second verse unleash a short round of musical hugging and kissing. Alas! What a yearning and sighing! The song with its blisseful kisses which give the CD its title is the programs heart. Because many of John Dowlands pieces have to do with love in all its facets between pleasure and sorrow. This is also reflected in the recording. From the four Books of Songs which appeared between 1597 and 1612 Hanna Thyssen and Susanne Peuker selected fifteen of Dowlands most beautiful songs, weaving them together with several lute pieces into an atmospheric Dowland homage. It documents his great compositional mastery, and his instinct for unpretentious melodies and subtle text settings. In this way, Dowland touches the listeners heart. It is no wonder that he was venerated already by his contemporaries as the English Orpheus, and that his music has found many admirers to the present day.

Bottesini is frequently compared to Paganini, and not without good reason: both were charismatic musical personalities who captivated the public wherever they appeared, and both revolutionised the playing techniques of their respective instruments. Bottesini introduced the solo bass strung with only three strings and tuned a wholetone higher than usual in order to attain a more brilliant and sustainable sound. This musician, already a legend in his own time, not only performed as a travelling virtuoso on the stages of the entire world but also as a celebrated operatic conductor and composer. It is therefore no wonder that the Italian opera also strongly influenced his compositional production. The double bassist Alberto Lo Gatto recorded his CD with the programmatic title "Belcanto" with an Italian bass built during the18th century, played in socalled solo tuning, and his accompanist Luca Antoniotti also plays an historic instrument, an rard grand piano built in 1871. They interpret variations and fantasias based on arias of Bellini and Paisiello in which Bottesini sounds out the entire spectrum of the double bass, from lyrical expressiveness to breakneck virtuosity. Moreover, we can also hear the soprano Emanuela Galli, who sings some of the opera themes in their original versions and interprets the wellknown romance "Une bouche aime".

NEW PAN CLASSICS 10281 Label Code 250 Price Code F PROKOFIEV PIANO SONATAS 2, 4, 7 Sonata No. 2 d minor Op.14 No. 4 c minor Op.29 No. 7 b flat major Op.83 ARTISTS: Evgeni Koroliov, piano Evgeni Koroliov, born in 1949 in Moscow, although doubtless an outstanding phenomenon in the international pianists' scene, still remains an insider tip, albeit one who has long enjoyed cult status. With his recording of the 2nd, 4th and 7th Piano Sonatas of Sergei Prokofiev, we can now finally obtain an item that was not available for a long time. The 2nd Sonata, composed in 1912, is characteristic of Prokofiev's formally strict and sonically original personal style. It is marked by a modern aesthetic; numerous elements take up futuristic ideas of the period that "idolise speed and sing praises of modern machines", supporting the hypothesis that there is "a beauty of noises" as described in the magazine Muzika, the voice of the Moscow avantgarde consortium shortly after this Sonata was composed. The 4th Sonata of 1917 has a completely different character, its first movement beginning with restrain and archaic grace the oppressive sounds are explained by the dedication to a friend who had recently committed suicide. After many years abroad, Prokofiev returned to the Soviet Union in the early 1930s with a downright naive optimism. The 7th Sonata was composed there a decade later, about which Glenn Gould had the following to say: "The first movement not only contains some of Prokofievs best music, but is, in open disregard of the Soviet musical maxim of direct accessibility, perhaps the closest to an atonal harmonic plan he ever applied." Baritone David John Pike has a widely varied repertoire covering early music, oratorio, symphonic, opera and commissioned works. In his native Canada, in the UK and across Europe, he has worked with leading ensembles including Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London Philharmonic and the Schweizerkammerchor under the direction of Christophers, Dutoit, Jurowski, Marriner, Metha, Rattle and Zinman. Along with more well-known works such as Love and Deep in my Soul there are early pieces such as O Salutaris hostia (composed for small amateur choirs) that give hints of his later mature style, through to the 1928 piece I sing the Birth a work that shows Elgar's ability to adapt to more contemporary styles of 20th-century choral composition. The repertoire for solo oboe is sparse, yet oboists can boast of a true gem: the inspiration brought to Benjamin Britten by the six oboe and the verse of the Roman poetry Ovid gave rise to the cycle Six Metamorphoses. In six personifications (Pan, Paheton, Niobe, Baaccus, Narcissus, arethusa), the impeccably refined miniatures represent contradictory human features. A similar abundance of characters is also rendered by the collection fo twelve Fantasias by G. P. Telemann, one fo the most productive composers of all ti me. This unique cycle was originally intended for the transverse flute, yet its being played by the oboe is fully in keeping with the Baroquen performance practice, affording the soloist the opportunity to display to the full the instruments virtuosity, as well as the wide colour scale and expressive abilities. A repertoire spanning the period between Baroquen and contemporary music is one of the most salient features of the recordings protagonist, Vilem Veverka, the winner of a number of international competitions and an acclaimed soloist. The 70 minutes simply fly by when l istening to a solitary oboe in the hands of an artist of such distinction. ARTISTS: Vilem Veverka, oboe.

Christian Weidner calls his new CD Dream Boogie - taken from a well-known poem by the Afro-American Langston Hughes. The title stands for a music that is dream-in-motion. With the lightness of a dancer, it flows forward in continually new layers and levels of imagination. Weidner wants his music to come "out of the depths of intuition". It is fascinatingly otherworldly music that has an intimacy at the same time. There is the masterful interplay of the musicians and the poignant beauty of the melodies - a dream to dance, a dance to dream! With a sense of the subtle and understated, events are gradually transformed, space is extended, themes magnetically attract new musical fragments.
