December National Health Observance: National Safe Toy and Gift Month
1-866-KTB-SERV (1-866-582-7378)
ktbenefits.com
Did you know that choking causes one third of all toy-related deaths—most often from balloons? Children under the age of 4 are often most susceptible to injury. Keep children safe by following these toy safety tips:
- Consider the child's age, interests and skill level. Look for quality design and follow age and safety recommendations on labels.
- Determine whether small toys may present a choking hazard to children under age 3. If a toy can pass through the cardboard core of a toilet paper roll, it is too small for young children and may cause them to choke if swallowed.
- Avoid toys with sharp points or edges and toys that produce loud noises and projectiles (such as darts).
- Avoid toys with strings, straps or cords longer than 7 inches that may pose a risk of strangulation for young children.
Avoid giving children under age 8 electrical toys with heating elements.
