Ted, KC, and Jack Hoppe's 1950ʼs Sloop "Black Jack" is now berthed at the Aeolian Yacht Club A Dock. She was a creation of William "Barney" Nichols, a local East Bay boat designer and builder way before his time. His Buccaneer design inspired Ben Seaborn's famed ʻThunderbirdʼ plywood hard chine racing sloops. It too embraced the use of epoxy and fiber cloth to make faster lighter boats.
Barney Nichols was a long-time Aeolian member for a good portion of the clubʼs history. Nichols hard-chinned sloops with a cutaway full keel with about 29 feet displaced about 7200 pounds. His boats earned respect throughout the area beating the best the Spaulding and Nunez Brothers could produce.
These Buccaneer class designed hulls were launched in the Oakland/ Alameda estuary sharing their build time between Jack London Square and the Aeolian Yacht club for finish and delivery. In those days, the Aeolian rail car ramp and decent wood shop was quite busy. Nichols hired and apprenticed many of the boat building legends of the San Francisco Bay Area including a very young Sven Svendson whom had a hand in building "Black Jack" which has many similarities to his loved folk boats.
Twelve boats were produced with "Black Jack" the remaining survivor of this once loved class. Nowadays "Black Jack" is a very active Master Mariners boat including being the Marconi 4 class Champion in this yearʼs Master Mariners regatta. The Hoppeʼs are really happy bringing this great girl back home to the Aeolian.
As the Brochure from 1957 says……."The Nichols Buccaneer is a fast, smart performing San Francisco Bay built hard chine sloop that lends itself well to class racing, single-handed sailing and family cruising.” In 1957 her retail price was $12,000 (fitted out with sails, motor and anchor).

" Black Jack" captain Ted Hoppe.
WEAREONFACEBOOK–Welcome!!
Hello Aeolians! I am very excited to announce that we have good activity on our Aeolian Yacht Club Facebook Page. This is a great place to post pictures and tell us a little bit about your activities related to our club. With many of us having smartphones and free available Facebook apps for our phones, posting comments and pictures is a great way to share the Aeolian experience real time and a great way to get impromptu cruise outs together or have a meet-up at the club. If you are already a member of our Aeolian Yacht Club Facebook Page, you have capability to invite others to the group. Please invite all of your Facebook friends that are members of Aeolian Yacht Club. Aeolian members can also search for our page directly on Facebook and request access to the page. Have a Happy New Year Everyone! Sincerely, Stefan A little about me: My wife Ada and our 6 y.o. daughter Anika have a Cal, s/v Luna Loca, berthed at the Aeolian. Work has kept us from being active except for taking our boat out. If you'd like to catch up for an impromptu event on the water or with kids, throw us a comment on Facebook. We'd love to hear from you!
