    PREPARATIONFORWORSHIP

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and withouthim was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the lightof men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, tobear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in

the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. Hecame to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receivehim, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, whowere born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but ofGod.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory asof the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John bore witness abouthim, and cried out, This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me ranks be-

fore me, because he was before me.) For from his fullness we have all received, graceupon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through JesusChrist. No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he hasmade him known.

    - John 1:1-18

Dietrich Buxtehude lived his entire life close to the shores of the Baltic Sea. He was mostlikely born in 1637 in the Danish town of Helsingborg, now part of Sweden. For almost

forty years Buxtehude served as the organist at the Lutheran Marienkirche in Lbeck. In1705, J. S. Bach traveled 200 miles on foot fromArnstadt to meet the pre-eminent Lbeckorganist and hear him play. Todays prelude on the Epiphany hymn O Morning Star, How Fand Bright(Presbyterian Hymnal#69) belongs to the genre of the chorale fantasy, in whicheach phrase of a chorale melody is developed rather extensively in a different manner. It broken into several distinct sections, and there is a striking similarity between parts of thiswork and several of the variations in Bach's Goldberg Variations.

Bach was a prolific writer of cantatas. Although many of his works are lost, around 200cantatas have survived. During Bach's tenure as a Kantor at the St. Thomas Church inLeipzig, it was part of his job to perform a church cantata every Sunday and holiday. All oBachs cantatas were related to the readings prescribed by the Lutheran liturgyfor thespecific occasion. During his first years in Leipzig Bach composed a new work every weekand conducted soloists, the choir, and orchestra as part of the church service. Three annucycles of cantatas have survived. His Cantata No. 142 (For Us a Child Is Born) is a choralwork for the first day of the Christmas season. The entire work is scored for alto, tenor, and bass soloists, a full choir, two recorders, two oboes, first and second violins, viola and

organ. TheAlleluiais the final movement from this joyful cantata.

Robert A. Hobby currently serves as Director of Music for Trinity English LutheranChurch in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Hobby was commissioned to compose three hymn settingin honor of the 40th anniversary of the ordination of a beloved pastor in Downers GroveIllinois. The hymn When in Our Music God Is Glorified(Presbyterian Hymnal#264) was one ofthe pastors favorite hymns. The heralding melody in todays joyful postlude is performedon the organs loudest stop, the Tuba Mirabilis.
