Joseph Oganda JANUARY 7, 2018 The Epiphany of the Lord Little Drummer Boy Did you know that the only reason we say that there were three wise men is that they brought three gifts? The Bible never says their number or their names. The gifts tell us about the givers. And these special gifts--gold, frankin- cense, and myrrh--tell us much. When one king visited or sent an ambassador to another, he would give a gift of gold to show that he acknowl- edged the kingship of the other. So the first gift of the wise men tells us they recognized Jesus as King. The second gift is a type of incense, which was used in Jesus time to worship God. So this gift shows the wise men paying homage to Jesus' divinity. The gift of myrrh is oil used to anoint the dying. It reminds us of Jesus suffering and death on the cross. So what gifts do we have for Jesus? Maybe we can take a hint from the wise men. If we acknowledge Jesus as king, maybe a better gift than gold would be to pledge our obedience to him. Each day we can promise to live our voca- tion as best we can, to love those around us, and forgive those who hurt us. A better way than burning incense to pay homage to Jesus' divinity is to take time to pray throughout the day. Some people are able to attend daily Mass, others spend time in adoration before the Eucharist, or even a few minutes of their lunch break to say the rosary. As for the gift of myrrh, we can give Jesus the crosses we bear each day. When we accept suffering in our lives, especially that caused by our sins, we give ourselves to Jesus as he gave himself for us on the cross. The song "Little Drummer Boy" reminds us that the best gift is not necessarily the most expensive. Instead, it is the simple gift that only we can give. Let Epiphany remind us to offer our lives to Jesus each day. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Baptism of the Lord Christmas Time closes quickly this year. Because Baptism of the Lord falls on Monday this year (instead of the following Sunday), the Christmas season loses a week. Let us not forget to cherish our own Baptism and the charisms, the special infused gifts, that may only be used for good.

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION The adorers, the people who pray before the Blessed Sacrament during Eucharistic Adoration, would love to pray for the needs of our parishes. Each Wednesday, a book will be positioned near the front of the church during Adoration. Eucharistic Adoration is at Sacred Heart Church every other Wednesday from 7:00 am - 8:00 pm and everyone is welcome. Anyone who has a prayer need may write it in the book. Each person who comes into the church to pray during Adoration, will read the prayer intentions, and will lift those prayers to the Lord during their hour of Adoration. We will keep the book and add to the prayer list each week. If you have a prayer request, contact any of the adorers or Chris Kelley at 559-6581.

Epiphany of the Lord - Coming and going. They are alien visitors, Magi from the east, who sek out Jesus, the newborn king. They had “visas” from King Herod because he urged them on the journey. The story is about Jew and Gentile. About us and them. About coheirs and copartners, to use Saint Paul’s language. All members of the same body in Christ Jesus. All sharing the one mystery, the one grace. • How do I help people come to Jesus? • What gifts do I have? What treasures can I give? • How sill I treat the alien?
