This may be done prior to the child’s birth. MARRIAGE We are unable to accommodate all of the requests for weddings at Stella Maris. To marry here, at least one party to the marriage should be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass for one year before asking to schedule a wedding. As Catholics, we believe that God has a plan for marriage. Cohabitation before marriage is not part of God’s plan and decreases the chances of success in maintaining a permanent union. Cohabitating couples should separate and live apart before requesting the Sacrament of Matrimony. More information is available from the parish office regarding guidelines for weddings and parishioner status. Diocesan policy requires at least six months’ notice before setting a wedding date. SACRAMENTAL POLICY In order to receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation, students in Grades 2 and 8 must attend TWO FULL YEARS of religious instructions if they are NOT in our Catholic School system. No more than THREE (3) classes can be missed during the year of sacramental preparation. The facilities and services of Stella Maris Parish are available to its active members. This includes use of the Church for Baptisms, Weddings, and other sacramental events and includes parishioner status in our parochial schools. Active membership is determined by three things: being registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time, faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, and the use of the envelope system in support of the parish. N.B. If you are attending Stella Maris but not receiving envelopes, then you are not registered. Please call the Parish Office for registration information. PLEASE PRAY FOR ALL THE SICK IN OUR PARISH If anyone wishes to receive Communion and is unable to come to Mass, call Jason Vaughan at 843-883-3044. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK My dear people,

Somewhere in the not too distant past, I recall telling someone how much I would like to see some snow this winter. As the saying goes, be careful what you ask for. It was beautiful, wasn’t it? And I am sure our children made the best of it. At least, I hope they could put down their smart phones and gadgets long enough to get out and connect with nature. How about our weather forecasters? They were spot on as to timing and conditions. There is always a downside to dramatic weather events and I hope you were all able to travel safely, keep warm and avoid frozen or broken pipes. We, of course, have had snow before, but I don’t remember snow in the midst of such extreme cold leaving us to wonder how long the roads might re-freeze at night.

Work began on the church floor on Tuesday, but didn’t get far. It was thought the workmen would be off Wednesday and return Thursday. By Thursday evening, it was clear they would not even be able to get here Friday given the slush on the roads, the freezing night temperatures and the many bridges and overpasses in the area. This left the church unusable, but it is just as well. Given the predicted lows, it would be difficult to heat the church this weekend.

If you checked our website about cancellations, you read what I hope you all know: there is no obligation to attend Sunday Mass in extraordinary circumstances. An ice and snow storm in Charleston is obviously an extraordinary and dangerous situation. We will celebrate our Sunday Masses but anticipate decreased attendance. While on the subject of common sense and Mass attendance, let me reiterate my hope that people who are ill will likewise remain home, not only for their own good but for ours as well. The flu is around.

Fr. Antony and I will be attending the Convocation of Priests in Myrtle Beach this week. Our thanks go to Deacon Vaughan for providing Holy Communion services while we are gone and for those who will be watching over the Rectory and church buildings in our absence.

We are hoping for some warm, sunny days this week; enjoy!

SCOUT SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5TH, 2017

Each week Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts across the Nation pledge to do their Duty to God. God is central to Scouting, and is key to the success of our Cub Scout Packs and Boy Scout Troops that serve the four parishes East of the Cooper. In the 1940’s, as part of the annual celebration of the founding of Scouting by Lord Baden Powell, Scout Sunday was conceived to make people in houses of worship aware of Scouting, and to allow Scouts to live out their “Duty to God”. Our units are blessed with support from parents who serve as leaders, priests who serve as religious awards counselors, and Bishop Guglielmone. Although Scout Sunday occurs only once a year, our Scouts and their leaders strive to carry out their Duty to God every day, winter, spring, summer, and fall. Thank you for supporting Scouting, and please let the leaders know how we can support you! We are always on the prowl for service projects. Contact your local Cub Master or Scout Master for details.
