January 6-12 1 Nephi 1-7 “I Will Go and Do” 1. Storytime- Show the “Lehi’s Family Studied the Scriptures” picture from The Friend (below). Tell them that we’re going to be learning about their family this week. Point out family members in the picture and tell them the names of them: Lehi (dad), Sariah (mom), Nephi, Laman, Lemuel, Sam, and their sisters (we don’t know their names). What are they reading? Lehi’s family lived a long time ago, but they knew the scriptures were important. Read and discuss “Nephi Gets the Brass Plates” from The Friend https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/friend/2020/01/nephi- gets-the-brass-plates?lang=eng or show the video from the church’s website: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/media-library/video/2010-12-04-chapter-04-the-brass-plates?lang=eng. Then use the cutouts (below) to have the kids act out the story found in 1 Nephi 3-4. The Scriptures Are of Great Worth - Read 1 Nephi 5:21-22 and tell them to listen carefully to what their family carried with them in the wilderness (the records, or scriptures). Why did they carry them with them? (Because they were of “great worth”). Why are they of great worth? Remind them that the scriptures teach us about Christ. Summarize the things Nephi and his brothers did to get the brass plates (traveled a long distance, gave up gold and silver, hid in a cave, etc.). Even though it wasn’t easy, they did it because they knew they were important. Talk about ways we can be better at treating the scriptures like a treasure and what sacrifices we have to make to understand and learn from the scriptures. 2. Lehi’s Family Scripture Sorting – Read/summarize the first paragraph from the family manual: The Book of Mormon begins with an account of a real family experiencing real struggles. It happened in 600 BC, but there are things about this account that might sound familiar to families today. This family was living in a world of increasing wickedness, but the Lord promised them that if they would follow Him, He would lead them to safety. Along the way they had good moments and bad moments; they experienced great blessings and miracles, but they also had their fair share of arguments and contention. Rarely in scripture is there such a lengthy account of a family trying to live the gospel: a father struggling to inspire faith in his family, sons deciding whether they will believe him, a mother fearing for the safety of her children, and brothers dealing with jealousy and contention—and sometimes forgiving each other. Overall, there is real power in following the examples of faith that this family—despite their imperfections—demonstrated. Show Book of Mormon Video Clip (The Lord Delivers Nephi from His Rebellious Brothers) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7dURlxNiFC4 or just summarize how Nephi’s brothers treated him in Nephi 7. What were some good things family members did in this story? What were some not so good things? Discuss which family members we want to be like. Lehi’s Family Sorting Activity: Cut apart the description cards below. Take turns choosing one out of a pile. Read what it says and decide if that family member’s action is something that showed faith and was Christlike or not. Set the description cards by the pictures of the family members they describe. Remind them that nobody is perfect and we’ll all have times when we fall short, but we can learn from our mistakes. Even though Laman and Lemuel complained and weren’t always nice to Nephi, what were some things they did that showed faith? (went into the wilderness with Lehi even though they didn’t want to, went back to get the brass plates, etc.) 3. Murmuring – The family manual states, “Perhaps your family would benefit from noting the difference between Laman and Lemuel’s response to the Lord’s commands and Nephi’s response. What can we learn from 1 Nephi 2:11–13; 3:5–7 about murmuring? What blessings come when we exercise faith?” Review how Laman and Lemuel murmured and talk about what it means to murmur. Let the kids pretend to murmur. Give examples of things they could be asked to do. Let them take turns “murmuring” like Laman and Lemuel might have and responding positively like Nephi would. How does it make people around you feel when you murmur? How does it affect yourself and others when you don’t murmur? 4. “I Will Go and Do”- Watch the Book of Mormon video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quZYkq22fVk. Tell them to listen carefully to what Nephi’s response was when Lehi asked him to go back to Jerusalem to get the plates. (“I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded”). Even though he knew it wouldn’t be easy, he said he’d obey what his father (Lehi) and the Lord asked him to do.

“I Will Go and Do”

2. Lehi’s Family Scripture Sorting – Read/summarize the first paragraph from the family manual:

The Book of Mormon begins with an account of a real family experiencing real struggles.

(went into the wilderness with Lehi even though they didn’t want to, went back to get the brass plates, etc.)

3. Song: Sing Nephi’s Courage from the primary songbook. This clip has a cute video to go along with the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BukLvMplJRk

Badges and Scenarios: How can we be like Nephi? Put on a badge (below) that says, “I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded” (idea from manual). Family members take turns giving scenarios while other family members respond by repeating the phrase on their badge and telling how they’d react to that situation (Your mom tells you it’s time to read scriptures, but you’re having lots of fun playing with your new toy and don’t want to put it down, Dad says it’s time to go to church but you’re tired, your neighbor needs help with doing some work, etc.).

Poster Idea from Manual (if time/interest): The family manual says, “The principle in 1 Nephi 2:20 is repeated often throughout the Book of Mormon. How can your family members apply it to their lives as you study the Book of Mormon together this year? Perhaps you could make a poster together featuring the Lord’s promise in this verse and display it in your home. It could serve as a reminder to periodically discuss how you have seen the Lord prosper your family when you have kept His commandments. Consider noting these experiences on the poster.”

5. I Can Go and Do – Read “A Nephi Attitude” story from The Friend https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/friend/2020/01/a-nephi-attitude?lang=eng. Discuss some things that we can DO and ways we can have better Nephi attitudes.

6. Courageous Hot Potato (in this month’s Family Fun section of The Ensign)- When Nephi’s brothers Laman and Lemuel complained that the Lord required hard things (see 1 Nephi 3:5), Nephi said he would “go and do” whatever the Lord commanded (see 1 Nephi 3:7).

Have everyone sit in a circle. Give someone a small, soft object (beanbag, tennis ball, balled-up sock, etc.). Play “Nephi’s Courage” on the Sacred Music app (no. 120 in the Children’s Songbook) while family members

pass the object around the circle. Pause the music at a random moment. Whoever is holding the object when the music stops will explain one faithful act they will “go and do” this

week. Discussion: What are some things the Lord has asked us to do that seem hard? How can we be more faithful

in our responses to those commandments?

7. Treat – Make a treat to show love for others and think of some specific things those people might need and ways you could serve them with a “Nephi Attitude.” Could also do a family service scavenger hunt to practice having a “Nephi Attitude” (https://www.sixsistersstuff.com/family-service-scavenger-hunt/ ).
