Health and tnessThey t together like a great marriage

CARL WEBERSPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Health and fitness are two of the keys to a better life experience. And, like any good marriage, there are ground rules to help provide the best experience. Here are some tips to help light your way.

1) Keep the pounding to a minimum. Choose a treadmill or a softer surface if you like to run or walk vigorously.

2) Vary the muscle patterns you use for aerobic exercise. At your gym, try 10 minutes each of rowing, cycling, stair stepping, and elliptical back to back.

3) Keep your heart rate up while lifting weights by varying opposing muscle groups. Go from biceps to triceps, leg extensions to ham curls, bench press to lat pull downs. Less rest between sets gets the work done in half the time.

4) Maximize your pure water / clean air / sunshine ratios. Exercise outdoors when possible.

5) Add some new flavour. Try yoga, pilates, Tai Chi, dancing, hiking or get a hula hoop. If it isn’t fun, you won’t keep it up.

6) Don’t forget to breathe fully. Remember, the best six doctors are air, water, sunshine, rest, exercise and diet.

7) Think of getting a workout buddy to help keep you motivated and accountable. Or get a dog.

8) Include flexibility, aerobic fitness and strength work in the ratios appropriate to your age.

9) Discover your weakest health link and work primarily on that. Move from weak link to weak link until you haven’t any left.

10) Up the pace of your household chores by 25 per cent and call it a workout. Crank the tunes.

11) Work on your health when you’re feeling healthy, not just when you have symptoms. Get a massage, maximize your Vitamin D levels, eat whole foods and organically when possible, tune up your spine and nervous system, and before you know it you’ll be experiencing fewer symptoms.

12) Don’t try to change anyone but yourself. Practice random acts of kindness daily.

13) Sit down to eat anything and stop before you feel full. Think twice before you put anything on your hair or skin that you wouldn’t eat. Avoid chemicals.

14) Become the most positive person you know. 15) Trade your TV and computer time for people time. Health and fitness are both a great marriage and a great way

to celebrate life. Celebrate well!Dr. Carl Weber, BPE (Hon), DC, owns Honu Family

Chiropractic.

Dislike routine? Try a hula hoop, and go outside to enjoy the fresh air.

NAOMI HORBATCHSpeciAl to the NewS

Every new year we make the resolution to lose weight and eat healthy and by the third week of

January, all the good intentions fade and we are back to our old habits.

So why is it so hard to lose weight? What are we doing wrong? It is not one magic fad diet or supplement that will bring the weight loss that

we seek. Here are some tips (aside from exercise) to help you achieve your healthy body weight.

1. Don’t look at the scale as a measure of success. There is a psychological stress that happens when

we are about to step on the scale. Instead, try on a pair of pants that you would like

to fit into and put them on every few weeks. The body doesn’t like to release weight until it

trusts you will stick to your new habits.2. Instead of saying “ I want to lose weight”

say “I am working on weight release”. The mind doesn’t want to lose anything, it wants to keep it.

3. Feed yourself every two to three hours. The body processes food, medication, vitamins and herbs every four hours. What you ate at 8 a.m. is used up by noon. Eat something light before bed.

4. Keep a stable blood sugar by eating small amounts frequently. Anxiety, nausea, crankiness around 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. can be attributed to low blood sugar so the body holds

onto body fat. 5. Understand that foods have a

healing effect, nutritional effect, or cause inflammation in the body. Find out your blood type and check out www.dadamo.com to learn more about how different foods react to different blood types.

6. Heed your digestion. As we age, our bodies do not make as many digestive juices. The body needs to break down fats, oils, sugar, lactose, starches, and proteins. If you are not digesting your food, you are not absorbing nutrients of the food.

7. Pay attention to elimination. Undigested foods in the colon can cause gas, bloating, foul breath and other symptoms. Bowel movements should be two to three times a day.

Think of a train coming into the station (consumed food); a train needs to leave the station to make room (bowel movements). If trains are always coming into the station and nothing exits, a backup occurs.

8. Body cleanse. There are many types of cleanses: liver, colon, gallbladder, yeast, and parasite. Just as you would clean out the chimney to your fireplace from buildup, your body needs to be cleansed as well.

It takes three weeks to make and break a habit; stick with your lifestyle change and focus on how your feel instead of what the scale says.

This information is for educational purposes only and not meant to replace any medical treatment your doctor has provided.

Mortgages 101Collateral vs. standard charge mortgages – what are the pros and cons?

Since an increasing number of lenders are moving towards collateral charge mortgages these days, it has never

been more important to understand the differences between a collateral and standard charge mortgage.

The primary difference is that a collateral charge registers the mortgage for more money than you require at closing – up to 125 per cent with one major bank – instead of the true amount you need to close your transaction (as is the case with a standard charge mortgage).

The major downside to a collateral mortgage becomes evident at your mortgage renewal date. For borrowers who want to keep their options open at maturity and have negotiating power with their lender, this isn’t the best product feature because

collateral charge mortgages are difficult to transfer from one lender to another. In other words, if you want to change lenders in order to seek a better product or rate in the future, you have to start from the beginning and pay new legal fees, which range from $500 to $1,000.

With a standard charge mortgage, in most cases, the new lender will cover the charges under a “straight switch” in order to earn your business.

In addition, with a collateral charge, it could be difficult to obtain a second mortgage or a home equity line of credit (HELOC) unless your home value significantly appreciates.

Lenders offering collateral charge mortgages promote the benefit that it makes it easier to tap into your equity for such

things as debt consolidation, renovations or property investment.

A standard charge mortgage gives you the ability to move to another lender at renewal should you want to without incurring legal fees, and many borrowers find it more beneficial to keep their options open. If you need to borrow more with a standard charge mortgage, you have the option of a second mortgage or a HELOC, which also enables you to take money out as your mortgage is paid down.

Navigating through the mortgage process alone can be tricky. Working with a mortgage broker ensures you receive the product and rate catered to your needs.

The bottom line on tax returnsGrass isn’t always greener on the other side

Anne PleySpeciAl to the NewS

Why does my neighbour get a bigger income tax refund than I do?

This is a popular question and the answer runs the gamut of the income tax scene.

There are many income tax deductions to choose from, but they are not universal. How many of them you can use to decrease your taxable income depends on your individual situation.

For instance, your neighbour to the left claims his spouse because she has no earnings. This deduction is not available to you because your spouse makes a good income.

Your neighbour to the right has a wife to claim but he is retired and it may be more advantageous for him not to claim the spousal deduction but to split his pension from work with his wife (for the sole

purpose of filling out the tax form). This transaction transfers up to half

the pension income from the taxpayer’s taxable income to his wife’s. It also transfers some tax paid on the pension to the wife, who may then receive a refund even though she has never contributed any income tax.

The neighbour across the street gets a deduction for each of his four children. They are active in sports and dancing and he can use the deductions provided for these pursuits.

Two children go to college and he can claim the tuition and education fees. Two children have braces and he claims a medical deduction. As a widower, he has no wife so can claim the equivalent to spouse deduction for a child.

But my neighbour works where I do, and has the same deductions.

I would guess your neighbour is being taxed at work as a single individual while you filled out the employer TD1 with a wife to claim. Because your wife earns too much, you can’t claim her. So you haven’t paid enough tax to handle your needs and will either have to pay more or receive a

small refund. Taxed as single, the

neighbour has paid in more than you have and will get a bigger refund.

Here’s a secret: It’s not about refunds. It’s about the

bottom line. Consider this: The person with a big refund has over paid, given the government a large amount of money to use interest free, and has probably been living day-to-day on credit cards at exorbitant interest.

Financial advisorsWho needs ‘em? You do

AARON VISSIASPECIAL TO THE NEWS

If we all had the time to research and take courses about investing, we could do it

ourselves—it’s not rocket science—but it would be a full-time job. You owe it to yourself to meet with a advisor to work out a plan for you.

The key to finding the right advisor is in asking six questions in the initial meeting before discussing your personal finances.

1. How long have you been in the business?

I recommend working with an advisor with at least three to five years’ experience. A seasoned professional will have seen the markets through ups and downs and be better equipped to help you through the volatility.

2. What is your overall investment strategy?

Some planners invest primarily for growth while others will be more conservative, looking to ensure that each individual’s situation is taken into consideration.

Advisors must follow the Know Your Client Rule, which requires advisors to ask specific questions to determine risk tolerance, need

for the money in future and current income/net worth levels.

3. How often will you meet with us for review and/or advise of any changes?

By asking up front what kind of service and review your potential planner will provide, you can determine some of his/her level of commitment to your plan’s success.

It is important to note that some specialize in specific areas of expertise or choose to deal with clients with a certain net worth. There is nothing wrong with this as specialized help is needed by some.

You should expect a review at least once a year, regardless of your balance.

4. What professional designations do you hold?

Advisors who invest in their education, invest in you, helping your money work harder. Those advisors who carry such designations as CFP® (Certified Financial Planner), or CGA (Certified General Accountant) have taken considerable steps to understand the financial markets and how they apply to retirement, estate planning and taxation.

5. Are you a full service planner?A full service financial provider

or advisor will have access to stocks, mutual funds, and insurance products and solutions. It is not necessary for you to have a full service provider but it is helpful if the planner has colleagues available to provide these services.

6. How do you get paid? There are several ways that

financial advisors get paid. Some advisors work strictly on commission from products and funds sold, while others work on a fee-for-service basis, taking a percentage of the assets held or charging a flat fee each year. Still other advisors use a combination of the two methods.

Remember, you are providing the advisor with business and you should come first. If you aren’t getting your questions answered adequately, find someone else you can build a trusted business relationship with.

Aaron Vissia, CFP, GBA, owns and operates Aaron Vissia Financial in Port Alberni.

Fresh Steps Behaviour Consulting

FIVE FACTS FOR A HEALTHY CHILD:

◆ GIVE RULES, as you cannot be upset with a child who breaks invisible rules

◆ BE CLEAR in your expectations, as children cannot read minds.

◆ TEACH YOUR child responsibility, as they learn from you.

◆ TAKE TIME with your child, as they look up to you.

◆ LOVE YOUR child, as they learn love from you.

factsQuickIs your kids’ behaviour baffling? Fear not, it’s normalWhat is behaviour?

Behaviour is an individual’s

positive or negative response to an action. Children behave in many different manners depending on their environment or on their physical and emotional stability.

Behaviours are habit forming mannerisms that children can use to their advantage or disadvantage depending on their specific situation. Most behaviours are deemed typical for daily living, however, when a child’s behaviour begins to affect his or her life and the lives of the family, intervention may be needed.

Children’s behaviours can baffle parents and teachers as well as annoy and frustrate. The response from a parent

or teacher can also ignite and escalate the child’s behaviour and stretch a small meltdown into an active volcano. It is important for the adults in the child’s life to understand, know, acknowledge and respect the child in question without being manipulated by the child.

Negative behaviours can be a child’s way of avoiding a situation as well as a crutch for anxieties and fears. Many children do not have the ability to voice how their body is feeling and use their behaviour as their communication.

Having patience, being able to read your child and giving a child tools and strategies to cope in difficult situations is important in decoding their behaviour. With increased language and communication

skills children will exhibit less negative behaviour.

Innately, children want to be loved, accepted, understood and nurtured. However, if a child feels that their needs are not being met through positive attention, they may revert to negative behaviour, as any attention is good attention in their eyes.

Catch your child doing something good and praise them with physical touch, high fives, stickers, treats and time together.

Noticing a child is monumental and being there for a child is life changing. Behaviours will come and go throughout the lives of children, but their memory of who was there to help and how you were there to help will last a lifetime.

Time to visit your pharmacyHere are three reasons

to kick off your new year with a visit to the local pharmacy.Clean the medicine chestDid you know that a medicine

cabinet in the bathroom is actually not the best place for your medication? Medication should be stored in a cool, dry, dark place. Old medications should be disposed of yearly. Expired and leftover medication that is not properly disposed of can be harmful to you and to the environment. Most pharmacies take old medications (free of charge) and dispose of them in an environmentally friendly manner.  You can bring in all medications, including over the counter medicines and natural health products. The best way to do this is to empty any pills into a bag and bring them to the

pharmacy. Liquids can be left in their original containers. Empty containers can be recycled where appropriate, but make sure you remove any of your private information.

Medication reviewWhile you’re at the pharmacy

dropping off old medication, why don’t you sit down with a pharmacist for a medication review? This is a relatively new service that is paid for by BC Pharmacare for most people who are taking 5 or more medications. A pharmacist will record everything you are currently taking, including prescription medications, vitamins, and herbal products. Any history of adverse reactions should be noted. The pharmacist can discuss your medications, including why they are being used and the best

way to use them. Talking to a pharmacist can help identify any problems, including unnecessary medicines and possible interactions or adverse reactions. The medication review can be shared with other health care professionals.

Buy Vitamin DVitamin D is an essential

vitamin that should be taken by all Canadians, because our latitude doesn’t allow adequate sunlight for our bodies to make enough natural vitamin D. Low levels of Vitamin D have been linked to MANY health problems, including headache, muscle pain, some cancers, Alzheimer’s Disease, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis, just to name a very few. These links cannot be proven conclusively, but there are probable associations between

low Vitamin D levels and many health problems. It has been established that Vitamin D helps prevent bone and muscle weakness because the body can’t absorb enough calcium without it. Fortunately, Vitamin D is one of the least expensive supplements you can buy. The need to supplement is not up for debate, however the amount needed definitely is. A minimum amount for anyone from babies to the elderly would be 400iu daily, but different organizations recommend different amounts. For adults, 1000iu daily is a good dose. It is not recommended to take more than 2000iu daily without a doctor recommendation.

Children are what they eatIs your child having

difficulties in school with short attention span,

restlessness, poor concentration, mood swings, and possible hyperactivity?

Children who are unable to stay seated, who are impulsive, and have difficulty following instructions may be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

ADD is becoming a very common “label” for children and even some adults. The typical symptoms are lack of concentration, shortened memory and attention span, difficulty writing and reading, impulsiveness, and being easily distracted.

The usual medical prescription is Ritalin. Some children respond well to this medication, but others do not. In any case, the underlying

cause of the behaviour disorder should be considered rather than just treating the symptoms.

Often, dietary factors such as food additives, sugar consumption, food allergies, and nutrient deficiencies contribute to and even cause behaviour problems.

In today’s fast paced society, the typical Canadian diet has become full of fast foods, refined carbohydrates, processed and packaged foods, as well as excessive sweets. Where has the healthy, wholesome, home-cooking gone?

A nutrient-deficient diet rich in saturated fats, artificial colourings, preservatives, refined flour products and sugar all contribute to learning disorders, obesity, and subsequent health conditions.

The first step to healing your child is to feed him or her whole

foods including fresh fruits and vegetables, leafy green vegetables, chicken or turkey (not processed/packaged), fresh fruit, beans and legumes, and whole grains (millet, oatmeal, brown rice, rye, spelt, quinoa).

Eliminate sugars, such as pop, candy, and fruit punches, as well as refined flour products (white bread), since destructive-aggressive behaviour is significantly correlated with the amount of sugar consumed.

Also, avoid processed cheese and luncheon meats (cold meats, bologna), which are full of cancer-causing nitrates and other harmful preservatives.

The next step is to determine food allergies or sensitivities your child may have. Since refined flour products (bread, pasta, cereal, cookies, etc) and dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt) are typically overly

consumed on a daily basis, there is a greater likelihood of developing an allergy to these foods.

Wheat and dairy sensitivities are significantly related to learning disorders, mood fluctuations, behavioural conditions, as well as digestive disorders. Naturopaths do food sensitivity testing to determine what foods may be aggravating your child.

Homeopathic remedies are also a highly effective method of treating ADD and other behavioural disorders.

There is no better time than the present to make the appropriate dietary and lifestyle changes for the health of you and your family.
