OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Mercy Parish is a Catholic community that worships God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people on a journey. Our goal is that the life of each person leads to the Lord.

LET US PRAY In your love and kindness please pray for the sick of our parish, especially: Lisa Martinsky, and Patricia Bilz.

Please also remember the deceased of our parish and their families, especially: Lucille Barnes, Juan Cevallos, Lilian Rodriguez, and Kenneth Deubel. Please join with us in praying one OUR FATHER per day for all those who have no one to pray for them. THE SANCTUARY LAMPS burn this week in memory of: Kathryn Padovano, Helen Mulzet and for Claudia Limon.

If you would like more information about reserving a Sanctuary Lamp in memory of a loved one or for a Special Intention, please call the rectory office at 201-391-5315.

IS RCIA FOR YOU? There are many reasons why you may want to become involved in the RCIA. Do any of these fit you?

• I have never been baptized. 1

• I am married to a Catholic and attend Mass, but just don’t know what the next step may be.

• I have been baptized in another Christian denomination and wish to become Catholic.

• I have been baptized Catholic, but have not received any other sacraments.

Do you know someone who might be interested in being in full communion with the Catholic Church? Ask, encourage and invite them to this program. The journey begins with one small step!

Upcoming sessions: January 28, February 4 at 10:30AM in the Parish Center. Call John Rokoszak at 201-391-3590 or email [email protected] for more information.

Pastor’s Column Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

As I write this, the US Catholic Church has just concluded “National Migration Week,” January 7-13, to reflect on the significance of migration in our nation’s history. Last Monday, we commemorated Martin Luther King, Jr. and his lifelong efforts toward equality for all, especially racial equality. And we are now within the Church’s, “9 Days for Life,” January 18-26, surrounding the “Annual Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children” on this 45th Anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade decision which made abortion legal in the US. At the heart of each of these topics is justice. Jesus tells us that the greatest and first commandment is: “You shall love the Lord your God,” and the second is similar: “love your neighbor as yourself.” These two “loves” involve justice, as understood in the Old Testament, Hebrew term for justice, seddaqah – which means right relation, balanced relation – with God, with self, with others – most profoundly in our relations with the most vulnerable. The Book of Exodus spells it out: "You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry (Ex 22:20-23).” God’s measuring stick for justice is how we treat “the widow, the orphan and the alien,” – a scriptural description of “the weakest and the most defenseless among us” – the “least ones” of Matthew’s gospel – for they lacked significant legal rights or means on their own; they were absolutely dependent on the kindness of others for their very existence and survival. This “kindness” was a requirement, an obligation – it was not simply an option. And so we are invited to reflect in these days on the contribution of migrants: who among us does not have a family history, in living memory of migration to this country? So we pray for a sense of “right relation” with the migrants of today, to see them through the eyes of Christ. We pray for their needs and we pray for our own hardness of heart towards the alien. And we reflect on the real progress around equal rights in the 50 years since the death of Martin Luther King, we pray in gratitude while praying still for the road that remains to be travelled. And with great pain, we reflect on the 60 million children “orphaned” by abortion since 1973 in the US – equivalent to the current total populations of New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland combined. Just imagine if we had these 60 million souls living among us today along (Continued in next column)

Why Follow Jesus Why follow Jesus? Because he asked. It is as simple as that. We have received an invitation from the Son of God to follow him. Our mission: To bring good news to the poor and gain everlasting life. Not a bad deal. Think of the other invitations you’ve received—to weddings, birthday parties, showers, family reunions: Nothing compares to the joy and glad tidings of Christ’s invitation to salvation. So, like the first disciples, abandon your nets and say goodbye to anyone or anything that is holding you back, and follow Jesus. Don’t forget to ask others to join you along the way. For as Boston Cardinal Sean O’Malley reminds us: We must never tire of inviting people to come into the Church, to discover the beauty and light inside. Part of our mission is to build up the body of Christ, the Church, by being an Inviting and welcoming community. In fact, it is in the very act of invitation and welcome that we maintain our bearings and stay the course of Jesus. - Patrice J. Tuohy Taken from Prepare the Word

with their own children! Imagine the pleasure of their presence and the wonderful contributions they would make to the Church, to society, even to Social Security! We pray for what we have lost but we pray also for their parents—for the psychological, spiritual and sacramental healing of every man or woman who, because of pressure, because of fear or for any other cause, has participated in any fashion in abortion.

God bless you all!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”

- Mark 1:17 Jesus’ call to “Follow me” is a call to all Christians! The call is in the here and now, in our present circumstances, not when we think we are “ready” or have everything in order. Good stewardship of our God-given gifts means that things aren’t always going to go according to our schedule and that God has a much better plan in store for each of us.
