Transit Changes Impacting Palliser, Bayview, Pumphill

With the MAX Yellow route 304 that started on Decem-ber 23, 2019, our communities now have transit service from Southland Leisure Centre and Glenmore Landing to Heritage Park, Rockyview Hospital, Mount Royal University, Marda Loop, downtown and return. Prior to the MAX Yel-low, accessing these locations would have required trans-fers to other buses.

With the introduction of the MAX Yellow BRT, a number of other transit service changes have also occurred, which impact the communities of Palliser, Bayview, and Pumphill. Here is a summary of some of the changes:

Routes 95 and 99The former routes 16 and 84 have been replaced with the new routes 95 and 99.

Bus route 95 operates from the Southland LRT station and then in a counter clockwise loop through Palliser along Pal-liser Drive to Oakridge (similar to the former bus 84); how-ever, it then comes back eastbound along Southland Drive instead of 98th Avenue. The other significant difference is that it will be running only from Monday to Friday during peak periods with no service on weekends.

Bus route 99 operates from the Southland LRT station and then in a clockwise loop along Southland Drive to 24th Street to Oakridge and then back along Palliser Drive to the Southland LRT station. Route 99 through Palliser is similar to the former 16, but the 99 bus route now extends service from Southland LRT station through the communities of Willow Park, Maple Ridge and Acadia and connects to the Heritage LRT station (similar to the eastern part of the for-mer 79/80 bus route).

Service to Southland LRT StationFor transit service between the Southland LRT station and our communities, the options are to take buses 95 and 99 which run along Palliser Drive, or buses 125 and 126 which run along Southland Drive. Route 56 has been modified, but it will provide access to Heritage LRT station and An-derson LRT station with bus stops along 24th Street and 90th Avenue.

Route 56 no longer services the Southland LRT station; however, you can connect to the MAX Yellow route 304 at the Co-op Station stop at 24th Street and Southland Drive or at the Glenmore Landing Station stop at 90th Avenue and 14th Street.

Please refer to the Calgary Transit website for further infor-mation including route maps, trip planning, schedules, and other route changes at www.calgarytransit.com.

PREsIDENT’s MEssAgEVolunteer at the January Casino

We need a few more volunteers for our upcoming casino fundraiser. Casinos generate much of the funding we use for community events and upkeep and

improvements at the community hall. If you have time to spare, please contact the office and we will find you a job.

Email [email protected] to assist us.

Serve Your Community as a Board Member of PBPCA

We are always happy to have new neighbors join our CA Board. Being a Board member is a very reasonable time commitment and it is a great opportunity to meet com-munity residents. Community members are welcome at our meetings on the first Tuesday of each month. Think of it as a test drive to see if you would like to come along for the ride!

Email me at [email protected] to learn more.

Join Us at the PBPCA Annual General MeetingA great way to learn about the activities your Commu-nity Association board engages in is to attend the PBP Community Association Annual General Meeting. You can find out what we’ve been focused on, learn about our upcoming initiatives, and join us for snacks and drinks! The 2020 meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb-ruary 4, at the community center and starts at 7:00 pm.

The Rink is Up and RunningWith winter settled in, our rink is now in operation with the ice in place. As a kid growing up in the community, I spent countless hours at the rink playing shinny with friends. Take advantage of our rink shelter, one of our major projects from the last few years, to put on the blades, take a well-deserved break, or to watch your kids.

On behalf of the Community Board and staff, we wish you a Happy New Year and great 2020!

Regards, Jay Nelson

Toboggan safetyEmergency Medical Services (EMS) would like to remind parents and children of a few toboggan/sledding safety tips as the winter season continues. Injuries may result from collisions with stationary objects on the hill, such as trees or rocks, or even collisions with other people. Unprotected falls can also result in more serious injury if you lose control at high speeds. However, everyone can be safe and have fun on the toboggan hill by following these reminders.

Equipment•Always ensure your toboggan or sledding device is

in good repair. Inspect it for any damaged or missing parts before each use;•Be certain the operator is fully capable of staying in

control of the sled at all times;•Children should wear a certified, properly fitted helmet

designed for other high impact sports such as hockey, cycling, or climbing.

Hazards•Avoid hills that are too steep or too icy;•Choose hills free of all obstacles such as trees, rocks,

utility poles, or fences; •Beware of loose scarves or clothing containing draw-

strings which could present a strangulation hazard if they become caught or snagged.

Plan ahead •Dress warmly in layers and anticipate weather chang-

es; •Consider bringing extra sets of gloves and toques to

exchange wet garments for dry ones; •Take breaks, out of the cold, to warm up; •Cover any exposed skin; •Even when properly protected from the elements, the

finger tips, toes, ears, the tip of the nose, and other high points on the face such as the forehead and cheek bones can be affected by frostbite; •If frost bite has occurred, treat it by first removing the

Be a snow AngelThis winter, when you’re shovelling your sidewalk from yet another storm, look around your neigh-bourhood and see if there is anyone who may need your help. Maybe they are elderly, or disabled, or go-ing through a serious illness that doesn’t allow them to shovel their sidewalks. Be a Snow Angel and shov-el their walks for them. All residents are required to clear their sidewalks of snow and ice 24 hours after the snow stops falling. Those who fail to clear their

sidewalks could face a hefty fine. Be a good neigh-bour and be a Snow Angel.

If your neighbour has been a Snow Angel to you, call 311 to let The City know and we will send you a letter to give them. If you are a Snow Angel, or have been visited by one, snap a photo, share it on the City of Calgary’s social media with #SnowAngelYYC.

During the Victorian period, there was an obsession with fern plants, known as pteridomania, or “fern fever”. Because of this craze, portions of wild fern species were significantly reduced, the effects of which can still be seen today.

Dear Friends,

As the Christmas lights come down, 2020 is now upon us.

While many are enjoying the wintry outdoor recreation or renewed gym passes to take that holiday turkey to task, I fully realize that others are facing difficult deci-sions to continue to keep the lights on.

Last month, Council passed a budget that effectively translates to an increase of 7.5% on the average residen-tial tax bill. Strip malls and neighbourhood shopping malls are facing increases of 14-18%. While I did not side with the majority of Council on this, I assure you that I will make the most of it and look to all opportunities to cut costs and improve efficiencies at City Hall.

This is the most entrepreneurial city in Canada. I am so proud of Calgarians, who have weathered financial and political storms over the last several years and yet here we stand. You continue to surpass my expectations in your resiliency, adaptability and innovation.

My efforts to help make Calgary more prosperous, liv-able and safe are made possible by the will of its citi-zens. Please get in touch with me ahead of March, when Council will finalize the tax rate, to share your thoughts and concerns.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you feel there is something we can help you with or an idea you would care to share with us.

Our first town hall of the year will be at the Kingsland Community Centre on Jan. 22 from 7-8:30 p.m. This community conversation will be themed on Crime Pre-vention and Safety and I hope to see you there.

Wishing you all the best this year.

Respectfully,

Jeromy Farkas(Palliser resident and Ward 11 Councillor for the City of Calgary)

Dear friends and neighbours,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season filled with joy and celebrations with friends and family.

Our government continues to deliver on key com-mitments we have made to Albertans. In the fall we introduced the 2019 Budget, a balanced, thoughtful, and pragmatic approach to getting back to balance and bringing jobs back to Alberta. We also introduced a number of bills that ensure a competitive electricity market, safety in rural Alberta, fairness for our farmers and farm workers, establishment of the responsible Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction Fund and we have begun the fight on the Opioid crisis.

In the upcoming months, our government will be host-ing Fair Deal Town Hall meetings. I urge you to take time to participate in these meetings as your voices are im-portant as we move forward. I do hope to see many of you at these meetings.

I would like to extend wishes for a blessed Christmas to members of the Orthodox Christian community, who celebrate this day on January 7. I would also like to wish our friends in the Chinese community a Happy New Year filled with luck and good fortune, as the Year of the Rat begins on January 25.

During January and February, I will be in the constitu-ency until the spring session begins in March. As always, please contact my office with any concerns or questions you may have.
