Pastor Sue’s Newsletter Article
January 2018
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being
through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has
come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The
light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.
(John 1: 1-5)
Last year at worship on New Year’s Day, I handed out a “Star Word”
to each person. It was a bookmark that had a word typed onto a star that
could serve as a guiding word for the year. My word was “goodness.”
As I reflect back on 2017 there were times when I definitely would
not have referred to what was happening as “goodness.” There were some
tough times. . . yet, out of those difficulties, God brought goodness. There
was always goodness.
Sometimes when we are in the midst of difficult times, it is nearly
impossible to find anything good, any silver lining, any sense of God’s
presence. My Star Word helped me to hold tight to God’s goodness and to
His promise to be with us and that the Light of the Savior would always be
stronger than the darkness of despair.
If you had a Star Word, how did you use it throughout this year?
I will be handing out new Star Words at worship on December 31st. If
you are unable to attend, I will have extras available in the church office.
Come by and pick one up!
May God’s blessings be with you and your loved ones as we finish
another year of loving and serving God and our neighbors near and far.
May 2018 be filled with God’s deep and abiding presence in all that is to
come.
In Christ Alone,
Pastor Sue Beadle

A Letter from Harley Ringhand, Council President
January 2018
Would I join Christ Lutheran Church?
If I were new to the Deforest area, would I choose Christ Lutheran Church for my spiritual home? Would
my family be welcomed into its midst? Would I be judged? Would I be accepted? I pondered how a visi-
tor might view our church as I looked out over the guests while serving meat balls and rutabagas a few
weeks back. CLC is rich in history dating back 170 years. Replete with customs and traditions that span
generations. In addition to traditions, our congregation is made up of members that are interwoven by
family, friendship, school, and marriage. All of which are the foundation and fabric of what is CLC to-
day, the big church on the hill.
Could this be intimidating to a visitor, a young family, a transferring member or, a member that attends
infrequently? In a word, yes. But it needn't be. We can reach out to others by saying hello, introduce
ourselves, invite them to have coffee. We all are part of that experience, that first impression, that genu-
ine interest in another.
What keeps members and non-members from attending worship services? We all face challenges to
come to worship, take part in activities and serve the church. A few of the common detractors are
health, mobility, young children, long week, nice to sleep in, youth sports, work, and many other priori-
ties. As with anything, we will not have time unless it is made a priority. Make time for Him; you will see
his hand in your lives. Besides challenges to attend, if we have made ties with others through a commit-
tee, choir, education, activity we are more likely to attend services.
Why should I do this? This is perhaps the toughest question. I am comfortable here. I have friends here.
I don’t want to reach out and be rejected, embarrass myself! I recall from a book I read that one should
bloom where you grow. In other words, if you like to cook you can relate to cooking with others. Other
examples are: raising children, antique tractors, tractor pulling, gardening - hostas, woodworking, quilt-
ing, knitting, guitar, drums and the list goes on. Whatever you share in common it is a way to remember
them and relate for future conversation. Another reason, and more compelling, is what God has meant
in your life? Can you see his hand in your life, the blessings? Do you wish this for others to experience
as well?
What can I do?
A local church challenges its members to “invite a guest to church, and the Holy Spirit will do the
rest.”
Ask members to join a committee, activity, choir, usher, ambassador, quilting, women’s bible stud-
ies, men’s bible studies, children’s education, ….
Listen to others and hear their message.
Sit with someone new during the service and introduce yourself.
Invite someone to join you for coffee after service.
If a visitor comes to our church this Sunday, will they see the Christ-like love within you? The vul-
nerability to reach out and share of yourself?
In Christ,
Harley Ringhand
Council President

Hallelujah!!
Making God’s Blessings Grow
During the fall of 2017, Christ Lutheran Church embarked on a three-year campaign
with two parts: a Capital Fund appeal and a Stewardship Campaign. Through prayer
and God’s blessings we have made great progress towards achieving our goals. Our
goal for the Capital appeal – to restore reserves, pay off the line of credit, replace the
front doors and renovate the Sanctuary is approximately $600,000 and we have
already raised $415,969 in a few short months. Our Stewardship Campaign has
resulted in pledges of more than $232,506 which will provide a strong foundation for
our 2018 budget.
We have celebrated these blessings and hope these gifts will encourage everyone to
continue to strive to reach our campaign goals. It is through these efforts that we can
continue our tradition as a congregation: to share the Word of God through worship
and fellowship; to nurture our community; to minister to all; and to witness by living
in the Word.
As we begin 2018, the Capital Campaign Team asks that all members continue to
prayerfully consider a commitment to both the Capital Fund appeal and the Steward-
ship campaign. We appreciate all you have done to make the first phase of the cam-
paign successful. Now we ask through continued prayer and God’s blessings to
continue to be successful in our efforts. A strong financial base will allow Christ
Lutheran Church to carry out the work of our Lord now and through future
generations.

The Blood Drive Thanks You!! Christ Lutheran’s first blood drive was
a huge success!! A big thank you to
Tracy Paulson for organizing the drive
and to all who donated blood. We
would also like to thank those who
donated food or beverages for the
event.
Our goal was 30 donors and we had
33, surpassing our goal. Looks like it
will be an annual event here at Christ
Lutheran.
Thanks again to all involved!!
Thank you to all those who participated in
providing gifts for the Giving Tree. We
collected 80 gifts for families and the
elderly in our community.
In addition, we were able to donate turkeys
to the families and residents of the
Community Center with extra money from
Thanksgiving.
Finally, thank you to Pam Hamele and her
team who collected the gifts and made
sure they were delivered in time for
Christmas!
Thank You to everyone in our congregation for supporting the Social
Ministries Committee in the numerous ministries we provided in 2017. You are
all very generous.
Also thank you to all of the ladies that help
provide delicious food and your time to help
with funeral lunches. You are always so will-
ing to help and the families are so grateful.
This would not be possible without your
support.
Pam Hamele

Youth Group
The Youth Group (7th—12th grade) will meet
on Sunday, January 21 from 5:00-6:30pm in
Norse Korner to help put together a plan for
your youth room. Snacks will be provided!.
Thank you to Pastor Sue for coming to the ICU
at Meriter to check on me and my family and
to pray for me after my triple coronary by-
pass. I also want to thank my CLC family for
their prayers during and after my surgery.
Each one made a huge difference, and I am
getting my strength back each day. Thank you
Lord for your healing powers!
God bless you all and have a Happy New Year!
