On Tuesday 17th January 2017 Dr. Dina Borzekowski and Ms. Nisha Ligon visited Daystar University to discuss a partnership between Daystar University and Ubongo Kids to carry out research in Rwanda, focusing on the effects of media on children in Rwanda.

Nisha Ligon is a co-founder of Ubongo Kids, a social enterprise that creates interactive edutainment for kids in Africa. Ubongo Kids, which is located in Dar es Salaam has been in existence for three years. One of their best-selling edutainment products is ‘Akili and Me’, an African educational cartoon airing in Tanzania on TBCI, and in Kenya on Citizen TV on Saturdays at 9:00am and NTV on Saturdays at 10:00am. They have also partnered with Citizen TV to add Kikuyu and Luo versions of ‘Akili and Me’, a cartoon which currently airs in English, in Kenya and Swahili in Tanzania. The aim of Ubongo Kids is to encourage children to learn.

Dr. Dina Borzekowski, who mostly goes by the name Dr. B., is a research Professor from the University of Maryland, School of Public Health, Department of Behavioral and Community Health.

She has carried out research on the impact of media throughout the world.

For this current research project, Sr. Prof. A. L. Lando, Prof. Michael Bowen and Prof. Mike Kuria of Daystar University are partnering with Dr. Dina Borzekowski, Ubongo Kids, and Dr. Everiste Karangwa of the University of Rwanda to carry out research, which will provide information that will guide the expansion of ‘Akili and Me’ to Rwanda, as the enterprise continues to grow. Out of this research, the team plans to publish a paper on the effect of edutainment on literacy of children, focusing on Rwanda.

Ubongo Kids has also produced a digital platform with apps created to teach the kids alphabets, math and other simple literacy

Daystar University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with National Environment Trust Fund (NETFUND). The MOU which was signed on 12th January 2017 will focus on incubation of small and medium businesses, which are environmental friendly. The two partners will be involved in the selection, training and coaching of incubates and the monitoring and evaluation of the businesses. The National Environment Trust Fund, Green Innovations Award (NETFUND GIA) identifies, recognizes, rewards and nurtures innovative projects and ideas in environmental management.

About 30 projects out of over 10,000 who had applied to take part in the NETFUND GIA were selected to take part in the training. The beneficiaries applied for the opportunity, went through shortlisting, followed by rigorous interviews, after which the selection of successful projects was done. Some of the projects which will go through the training include Green Biofuel from Water Hyacinth (Mudheiro Mixed Secondary) from Siaya County, Banana Fibre Production and Marketing (ICOSEED) Kirinyaga County, Bones and Value Chains Isiolo County, Heri Tosheka Woven Treasures, Wote, Makueni County and Production of Black Solder Flies Larvae for livestock feeds,

The School of Business and Economics will be in-charge of the trainings that will take place in a span of 10 years. The training will focus on financial management, marketing, public relations, communication skills, negotiation, export and import as well as coaching.

Representing Daystar University was the Vice-chancellor Dr. Timothy Wachira while NETFUD on the other hand was represented by the CEO Ms Catherine Ndegwa. Dr. Samuel Murithi is the coordinator on the side of Daystar and Andrew Machora for NETFUND.

The NETFUND also hosts the Annual Green Innovations Awards (NETFUND GIA) that seeks to instill a culture of self-regulation in environmental management in Kenya.

This is phase 2 of the process. Phase one which came to completion in 2015, begun in 2014.

Daystar Christian Fellowship on Wednesday January 25, 2017 hosted three alumni in the Valley Road Campus auditorium for the Alumni Panel. The invited alumni were Rev. Tom Otieno, Mrs. Florence Wamai and Rev. Cyprian Yobera. The three who graduated in 2001, 1996 and 1995 respectively have made names for themselves in the job market and are thriving in their professions. Rev. Otieno, a Senior Pastor at Lavington United Church, Mrs. Wamai is a Communications Coordinator of Africa at World Global Alliance and Rev. Yobera is a part-time worship pastor at Daystar University.

In an interactive session, among the questions posed to them were their understanding of Daystar’s Vision and Mission, how they has helped them in their social, career and family lives and how they have applied the Daystar Vision and Mission in their lives? Their responses were mostly aligned to Daystar’s core values, centering on servant leadership, excellence and transformation. The three confessed that they have all lived out their lives as servant leaders.

The alumni also touched briefly on the January semester’s theme: Sexual Purity. Rev. Tom Otieno highlighted on sexual formation; that

is the values one holds concerning sex and self-governance. He emphasized that one should not die alone with past sexual sin and advised that it is always good to have a mentor or an accountability group where people can share experiences and encourage one another towards sexual purity. “Sexual sin is not a new thing; it has been there since time immemorial therefore, if one has already engaged in sex it is possible to stay pure from now. One should just have a repentant heart, surround oneself with good company and have a mentor or group that you are accountable to” he said.

As the discussion came to a close at 5:20pm, the take home points were:

• Relationships are meant for men and women not boys and girls.

• One gets into a relationship when they are ready for commitment.

• Sex is always a game changer in a relationship-A relationship will always be distorted when sex is involved.

The Alumni Panel L-R - Sharon Ngugi (DCF Secretary), Rev. Tom Otieno, Madam Florence Wamai, Rev. Cyprian Obera and David Mbithi (DCF Mission Coordinator)

Toward the African Revolution (Fanon, Frantz) New Editionby Frantz Fanon (Author), Haakon Chevalier (Translator), Francois Maspero (Introduction)This powerful collection of articles, essays, and letters spans the period between Black Skin, White Masks (1952) and The Wretched of the Earth (1961), Fanon’s landmark manifesto on the psychology of the colonized and the means of empowerment necessary for their liberation. These pieces display the genesis of some of Fanon’s greatest ideas — ideas that became so vital to the leaders of the American civil rights movement.

Debating Governance: Authority, Steering, and Democracy 1st Editionby Jon Pierre (Editor)Leading scholars in the field of governance examine the effectiveness of the different non-institutional strategies at the disposal of modern governments in tackling issues of urban decline, public administrations, governmental regionalization, budget deficits, and global economics.

The Thirteenth Edition’s hallmark continues to be its pioneering integration of the proven-effective SQ4R learning system (Survey, Question, Read, Reflect, Review, Recite), which promotes critical thinking as it guides students step-by-step to an understanding of psychology’s broad concepts and diversity of topics. Public Speaking: Strategies for Success (8th Edition) 8th Editionby David Zarefsky.Public Speaking: Strategies for Success gives readers the tools they need to think critically, plan strategically, and speak effectively. By thinking analytically, organizing ideas, doing sound research, and properly assessing their audiences, readers learn how to successfully inform and persuade. In the process, they build necessary skills for many other areas of life. The Eighth Edition builds on the idea that public speaking is a strategic practice. It allows readers to recognize that public speaking is an art dictated by the dynamics of an audience. By learning a set of norms and expectations and strategizing how to plan for any situation, readers are better able to achieve their public speaking goals. Students learn to prepare for any public speaking situation by assessing different strategies and developing habits of analysis and memory through examples, activities and sample speeches. Emphasis on underlying theory throughout helps readers understand how certain speakers and their audiences engage one another.
