Welcome to 2015… It is important for all to check out the agenda for the January meeting. (see page 3) It is longer than usual and lists some im-portant decisions to be made. Part of the extra length is due to the addi-tion of a new separate item ‘Editors Re-port’. This item gives your Ed an opportu-nity to hear from members regarding Clipper content and format. (I have already received

a good idea from one of the officers during a preliminary discus-sion - which I plan to implement) and also to discuss ‘side is-sues’ I happen to get involved in when interacting with other SAM constituencies on items which need to be brought to the attention of SAM 21. An example is Item B of the Editors Report which could affect the Chapter treasury or, alternately, separate members. Your active participation in the scope, content and format of the Clipper will be truly appreciated.

By the time this issue reaches you the Annual SAM 21 Awards Banquet will be only days ahead. The good news is, that there will still be time to RSVP if you get right on it. (see pages 6 and 7 for complete information) This is the only ‘spouse included on purpose’ event that we produce, always appreciate their humoring us and hope they enjoy meeting and greeting those who they usually know only through the telephone. There will be a drawing with at least 1 model (airplane that is)

engines/motors (including a Speed 400 power kit), and miscella-neous kits and stuff. You will have to be there to claim a prize.

Attention All Fashion Conscious and Cold People: We interrupt this message to bring to your attention that Brian Sargent is looking for 8 or more people to complete a new order for the stylish and warm Embroidered SAM 21 jackets at a reasonable price. Space limits details here, but Brian will be happy to supply them. If you may be interested, contact Brian at: 408-656-3662 or <[email protected]>

… From The December

Meeting

AMA 27944 Over and Out…

Above: Brian Chan and Alan Peterson and Jeff Mate seem unimpressed with Ken’s progress on his BoxKar wing and his ‘I won!’ election proclamation.

Left: Newly elected President Ken Martinez, shows his Benny Boxcar framework

Above: An example of SAM 21 ‘multi tasking’: four people doing four different things at the same time. Brian Chan says “Hi Mom” for the camera while Ted Kafer, behind, carefully checks empen-nage construction to ensure conformance to rules, Rick Cutler, left, checks his smart phone and Ken Martinez checks BoxKar plans...

We now resume our regularly scheduled ‘lies and exaggera-

tion’ for which this column is well known…

I take some space here to say a special thanks to Gary Leo-pold, Dave Lewis, Dr. Joe Poco and Lescher Dowling for their service during the past two years. All, except Dr. Joe have served before, and all, including Dr. Joe, deserve extra praise for stepping up when all else fails. The good news is that we have two new officers, President,

Ken Martinez and Secretary Alan Peterson, for the next two years, a third, Ted Kafer, who has previously served (some time back), and a returning (perennial) officer, Treasurer Lescher Dowling who is a glutton for punishment. Having had the ’new officer’ experience myself, I can understand if they are anxious. Let’s make their job as easy as possible by help-ing out whenever help is needed and participating in the busi-ness and activities of the Chapter. Otherwise, why are we here? Oh, the ’otherwise’ is: to HAVE FUN! I have some ideas regarding the ’officer’ problem (recruiting)

that I plan to share with you in the future.

Fred Terzian seems pleased with his gift. Much to his dismay - no winners...

Dang it Dr Joe, I wanted that one!!!

Santa Loves Dave...

Poor Ted. No one will sit by him and from the looks of the empty bag and tiny yellow ‘gift’ on the table in front of him he has a right to look bemused...

Perennial Treasurer doing his thing, thinks he’s Bob Cratchet

Dang it !!!

Our other Dave tries to save the wrapping paper - gave up

Dang it Dr Joe, I wanted that one!!!

Former President Leopold tries to ‘kiss up’ to Santa. Didn’t work...

I guess $20 bucks wasn’t enough?

Santa’s huge gift

Dang it Dr Joe, I wanted that one!!! What the

heck is this???

That’s $20 Cash!

Above: To everyone’s delight, Santa Claus himself showed up carrying a large, red striped gift being opened by Dr. Joe, above right, who was by far, the busiest Gift Trader. Santa’s identity (not Dr. Joe’s) was eventually revealed, but all participants were sworn to secrecy on pain of death… so you won’t find it here. You’ll just have to show up next year!

I’m sitting closest to the door so I can be 1st in the cake line...

Ho, Ho, Ho, no one knows. I got it on sale at the Walmart..

C’mon, c’mon get on with it already...

Altitude Limited Old Timer Update

A.L.O.T. Where are you? In case you were wondering what happened to the concept of including an Altitude Limited Old

Timer event in the SAM Champs as a ‘Special Event’, wonder no more as progress is being made behind the scenes to move the proposal forward toward inclusion as a Special Event at the 2015 SAM Champs.

The concept of A.L.O.T adapted to a SAM event was basically co-opted from the very popular A.L.E.S (altitude limited electric soaring) events, and was modified so as to include any SAM legal model with any motive power, except turbines, with a minimum of rules.

To remind you, the idea is to restrict powered altitude to a reasonably easy to see, common limit which, hopefully, would encourage SAM modelers to compete by building event specific mod-els or, even better, add an altitude limiting system to some of their favorite existing SAM models. We’d also expect to see more interesting engines appear since a super high powered “hot rod” type engine would not be required.

A.L.O.T. competition was proposed as a Special Event for the 2013 SAM Champs, but was poorly organized and yielded no useful data. Since then much time and effort has been spent to firm up the rules and find a replacement for the Winged Shadow, Sky Limit unit which went out of production in 2013.

The good news is that testing has shown that the currently available Hobby King Altitude limit-ing unit appears to work satisfactorily. The testing program should be completed by the time you read this, following which a concrete recommendation will be made.

The Hobby King instructions aren’t particularly easy to understand, but at your request, I can forward a re-written instruction to simplify setup.

If you would like more information, I will answer E-mails/Texts at [email protected] or on the telephone at: 925-321-1552.

WHY SO HIGH? Ed Note: This piece was published in the Clipper at least four years ago. Has anything changed?

At the risk of exposing my ignorance (again?), and starting an unnecessary controversy, I don't know about you, but the current engine run rules, except for Texaco events perhaps, invite practically out of sight powered climbs - at least almost out of sight for these tired old eyes. Sure, it's great to start the glide portion of a flight at an elevation which allows a lot of time to search for lift but, it

seems to me that the extra height only adds to the "luck" factor. I know, it's usually not possible to max out on a no lift day, even with the great starting altitude, but might it not be more efficient in terms of running a contest (fewer fly offs) and just as, if not more competitive to say, cut the currently allowed engine run times in half or by some other reason-able factor? Why not keep them in sight and more realistically compare the efficiency of the Old Timer designs flew in their original competitions. Compared to our free flight heritage how many times have you seen even well built models literally disintegrate dur-

ing the power portion of the flight? And how many "out of control" climbs happen during the first 5 seconds and the last 10 seconds of the engine flight? Look at it this way - if you were flying your "Old Timer" W/0 RC assist, would you risk free flight based on the current engine run rules? I think not. For me the most enjoyable part of each flight is when the model comes down to an altitude where you can see what it's all about - a beautiful piece of art.
