from the presidentThe third season of Reel NW kicks off Friday, January 18, with Welcome to Doe Bay, a film that documents how innovative, creative individuals join together to create a uniquely Northwest musical experience. The following week, Hood to Coast follows four teams on an epic journey to conquer the world’s largest relay race. Both documentaries feature resourceful people who are motivated to attempt the extraordinary.

On television, online, and with community screenings, KCTS 9 has consistently demonstrated a commitment to independent film. Presenting these films is one of the things I love most about public television. The filmmakers take creative risks, tackle complex issues, and express points of view seldom explored in the mass media.

With POV, Independent Lens and our own Reel NW, focusing on the best in independent film from this region, we’re proud to provide a year-round platform for independent filmmakers on public television. Here at KCTS 9, we also strive to attempt the extraordinary. I hope you’ll join us.

Thank you for your support.

V cup extra virgin olive oil, divided1 large yellow onion, sliced thin1 healthy pinch of salt1 pinch black pepper, freshly cracked, or red pepper flakes 1 large clove garlic, thinly sliced lengthwise1 bunch lacinato kale, stem/core removed, leaves stacked and cut into a fine chiffonade

Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. add most of the olive oil and immediately add the onions and salt to help the onion wilt.

Cook the onions, stirring often, until they begin to brown lightly. add the pepper and garlic, stirring in quickly to prevent burning. Increase the heat and add the remaining oil and the kale.

Using tongs, quickly rotate the kale to prevent burning. Reduce the heat to medium and allow the kale to wilt and caramelize. If the kale seems dry, add more oil. Once the majority of the kale has collapsed, reduce the heat to low and allow the kale to cook slowly for 15 to 20 minutes. If the kale still seems dry, add 1 tablespoon water. Serve immediately.

Sautéed Kale with Onions serves 4

This recipe is an adaptation of a Brazilian dish of sautéed greens. The trick is in the caramelization of the kale, which sweetens it and gives it a smoky flavor.
