The Brandeis Academic Debate and Speech Society is currently ranked second in the naon, and has also received three consecu-
ve Club of the Year awards from the country's top collegiate debang society. Members say their success is due to their inclusivi-
ty....anyone may join without tryouts, and the club then uses their strengths. While some debate topics can be entertaining, the
club also focuses on serious issues, such as exploring social jusce on campus and around the world.
Elizabeth Stoker, class of 2013, has won a Marshall Scholarship, the fourth Brandeis student to be granted the award since its in-
cepon. Following graduaon, she will study at the University of Oxford. Elizabeth has integrated academics and applied ethics in a
paper on disability and ethics, presented at a regional conference this year.
The incoming Freshman class this year, Brandeis Class of 2016, promises to connue to produce outstanding achievers. Two-thirds
ranked in the top 10 percent of their high school graduang classes, and 93 percent were in the top quarter. Leading up to their
arrival at Brandeis, they worked for the disadvantaged in urban America and in the upper Amazon, parcipated in communal and
religious organizaons, made films and music and studied and traveled widely. One student, Cameron Wolfe is assistant director of
an online store, The Pencil Promise, that donates a backpack to a school in a developing naon, for every backpack that is sold.

On Sunday, December 16 a theatre loving group of 64 Brandeis members and guests attended our annual Asolo opening production, this year , the stellar musical , "1776", directed by Frank Galati.
We gathered at 11:30 pm in the Cook Theater for an exciting panel discus-sion led by Asolo Literary Manager, Lauryn Sasso, with three actors from the production sharing their background of how they immersed themselves in the historical charactor to "become the stage character", how the gifted
director Galati inspired their performances, and a background of the event and the times. After the discus-sion , luncheon, provided by Mortons Market, was enjoyed by all on the mezzanine where we could enjoy being together before the 2:00 curtain.
As befits a musical about the giants who created the Declaration of Independence , this production is filled with towering performances that give the men backbone, brains and humanity, as Galati captures the tension and rancor of the time. It is a powerful show done in thrilling style with an impressive cast and orchestra. If Ameri-can history were taught with as much zest as you'll find in the Asolo Rep's "1776", we'd all be far more familiar with the story of our nation’s birth.
November 9 was a sensational day for BNC Sarasota! Our eyes were opened first to more than 25 Study Groups, multiple Special Events, ex-citing upcoming General Meetings, as well as holiday parties, University on Wheels, mentoring opportunities and so much more. This group has happenings to appeal to everyone. We then had a beautiful brunch and time to reconnect with friends and make new ones, too. Our successful event was hosted at Temple Beth Sholom in their spacious social hall. Next, we had our eyes opened to 3D Digital Film Making created by the students at Ringling College of Art and Design, another Sarasota treasure. Bradley Battersby, the head of the Digital Film Making department and the writer, pro-ducer and director of 5 films himself, excited us all with an outstanding presentation. An animated speaker, he taught us about the history of 3D as well as showing a documentary about the making of the film, done with the West Coast Black Theater and Ringling students. Over 180 members and guests were wowed by what is being created in our mists. How lucky we all are to have many cultural resources in the area and such an active BNC group to bring them to us.

Chanukah Party…Chanukah Party…Chanukah Party…
All Jazzed Up!All Jazzed Up!All Jazzed Up! On December 7
th, the 2012 BNC Chanukah Party was held at Temple Sinai.
A/er a wonderful brunch, catered by Affordable Custom Caterers. Ellen
Klein led the group in a fun game of Chanukah Trivia, and with hubby
Rabbi Richard’s assistance, rewarded each person who answered her
ques8ons correctly with a sack of chocolate Chanukah gelt. Some smar8es
even got two prizes!
We then were delighted by Be;y Comora, a versa8le jazz vocalist. With
enthusiasm and a great sense of humor, she performed jazz numbers from
the 1920’s through the 1940’s. Assisted by our own vamps, Shelly
Youngelman and Marcia Rabb, and a couple of feather boas as props,
Be;y brought down the house with a rowdy version of “Hard Hearted
Hannah.”
As is tradi8onal for our Chapter, we shared some of our holiday cheer with
Hope Family Services, a women’s shelter in Bradenton that we support at
this 8me of year. Almost $700-worth of personal goods and cash dona-
8ons were collected from members for Hope Family Services.

I had more fun this aernoon than I’ve had in years! I went to Sherry
Linhart’s Flower Arranging study group. How was it? Low-key and
lovely. Very relaxing and fulfilling. And much more creave than I
expected.
She commented about containers, explained a few arranging princi-
ples, gave us a few do’s and don’ts, made some points about using
greenery and leaves that grow in our backyards and neighborhoods,
pointed out the fresh and dried flowers and leaves she brought for our
use, answered a few quesons, and ZOOM! We were off and running.
As we all filled the vases we had brought, or used containers that were provided, the ideas flowed. We shared flowers,
leaves, berries, branches and ideas. We took construcve cricism from Sherry and from one another. It was great!
And it was good to see a few members I don’t see oen at the study groups I aAend.
As we were winding down, I asked Sherry if she would do a reprise next year. “Maybe,” she said, noncommiAally.
“We’ll see.” I sure hope so. And if she does offer Flower Arranging next season, take my advice: Don’t miss it!

SUSTAINING THE MIND: SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND SCHOLARSHIPS
Did you know that Alzheimer's disease alone affects 15 million people worldwide? Maybe you or a family member or
friend is one of those people. As the populaon ages and this number increases, the need for neurological and neuro-
degenerave disease research becomes increasingly important.
Brandeis University researchers are already pioneering strides in the field of brain-related disorders, including Alzhei-
mer's and Parkinson's diseases. Sciensts in the areas of neurodevelopment, neurodevelopment disorders and neuro-
degeneraon are trying to understand the fundamental biological processes underlying brain funcon. These Brandeis
professors and students are dedicated to the basic research that has already led to breakthroughs in our understanding
of neurological diseases. Educang tomorrow's sciensts is important; that's why invesng in scienfic research and
scholarships at Brandeis is an investment in the future. Plus Brandeis is commiAed to ensuring that it helps meet the
financial needs of students doing outstanding work in science's fastest-growing arena. We invite you to join the Brandeis Naonal CommiAee's "Sustaining the Mind: Scienfic Research and Scholarships"
campaign to establish an important fund to foster research in neuroscience and neurodegenerave diseases, and to
establish an endowed scholarship fund for students in the sciences.
