DIRECTOR’S MESSAGEDIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Chamber President, 2012Chamber President, 2012

Remember the Etch-A-Sketch?

Most of us old enough to remember the 60’s may recall a toy called the Etch-A-

Sketch. The Etch-A-Sketch drawing toy was (and still is) a flat red box with two knobs

that guide a drawing tool around a flat screen which etches whatever your mind can

imagine onto the screen. What’s unique about the toy is that you can design an endless

amount of drawings and pictures over and over again, but unlike computers today, there

is no SAVE button. When you’re finished with your project, you have to shake the

device and it erases all you’ve done before you can begin again. It’s a simple but I

ingenious toy with no memory.

Januaries are a lot like a newly shaken Etch-A-Sketch – a blank screen with our

hands on the knobs. As Chamber Members and Business people we’ve erased last year

and are now looking forward to starting over once again with a whole new perspective

on the coming year. So what new creation are you going to create? How are you going

to reach out and connect you and your business to the rest of the world? Whatever you

did in 2011 is gone and all you can focus on now is what’s in front of you.

I want to invite you to include the Chamber of Commerce in your drawing plans this

year. As you turn the knobs and begin to put 2012 together, make a commitment to use

the many resources your Chamber has. Connect with the 300+ other businesses, find a

spot in our CornFest, market your company in our parade, display your logo on our

soon to be new website, bring your business cards and brochures to display in our

lobby, and participate in Hometown Halloween or golf tournament to spread the word

about you. Use us.

I love the Etch-A-Sketch, because it reminds me that what I’ve done in the past is

gone and no longer visible, and that what really matters most is not what I’ve done

yesterday, but what I am going to do today!

NLRA Poster Requirement Delayed Until April 30

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has postponed the effective date of its employee rights notice-posting rule until April 30.

Most private-sector employers must post a new notice issued by the NLRB entitled, “Employee Rights Under the National Labor Relations Act.”

This poster requirement was scheduled to be implemented on January 31, 2012, but on December 23, 2011, the NLRB delayed implementation in response to a request by a federal court judge hearing a legal challenge to the poster requirement.

The National Association of Manufacturers has challenged the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) poster requirement on multiple grounds. This is the second time that the NLRB has delayed implementation. Because this issue remains in litigation, there is a chance that this posting deadline will be delayed one more time.

Q & A Sheet

A questions-and-answers sheet about the “Employee Rights under the NLRA” poster requirement is available at

calchamber.com/requiredposting.

For more information about purchasing the poster as part of the CalChamber Required Notices Kit, visit the Cal-Chamber Store.
