When frogs are just teensy tadpoles theyre already croaking like adults researchers have observed for the first time
They not only croak when attacked but when they cannibalistically attack members of their own species as well scientists find
Tadpoles or pollywogs are frogs in their young larval stages They dwell entirely in the water and look somewhat like fish
Frogs are well known for croaking with each species having its own unique call Now researchers are discovering that tadpoles can speak up as well (albeit much more softly)
Evolutionary biologist Miguel Vences at the Technical University of Braunschweig in Germany investigated the tadpoles of a frog s p e c i e s f r o m w e s t e r n M a d a g a s c a r Gephyromantis azzurrae which prefers living in cool shallow fast streams These pollywogs are carnivores preying not just on insect larvae and shrimp but also on tadpoles of the same and other species
Vences and his colleagues found these predator tadpoles called out while attacking prey by making rapid clicks perhaps by snapping the
hard sheaths over their jaws together They called out significantly more often when they were hungry or when attacking tadpoles of the same species
Most animal sounds such as in birds frogs and crickets are produced in the context of reproduction and therefore by adult animals usually males Vences said It is very rare that young animals and especially larvae are producing sounds except maybe in birds where of course the young are known to chirp as loud as the adults
What are the tadpoles sayingThe experiments showed that smaller tadpoles made fewer calls and were less likely than the big guys to use a combination of different call

types suggesting the sound of the clicks might yield clues about the size of the tadpoles making them They might be used to chase away other members of their own species the scientists speculated Their findings will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the journal Naturwissenschaften [Read about tadpoles with three eyes]
Tadpoles of another frog species were a l s o r e v e a l e d earlier this year as capable of calling out mdash the South American horned frog Ceratophrys ornata However t h e y m o s t l y sounded off when attacked emitting brief clear metallic notes by pushing air out their lungs when tadpoles of their own species attacked them These distress calls might prevent the tadpoles from cannibalizing each other
I find communication a marvelous thing in nature modern society art expressions technological development and its evolution towards complex adaptive systems said herpetologist Guillermo Natale at the National University of La Plata at Buenos Aires He and his colleagues detailed their findings regarding South American horned frog tadpoles online Feb 26 in the journal Acta Zoologica
When it comes to future research into tadpole calls we need additional experiments showing that the tadpoles actually hear these sounds and alter their behavior accordingly mdash that is they escape when they hear the sounds even if there is no one attacking them or they become themselves more aggressive when hearing such sounds around them Vences said
Vences suggested that additional research on tadpoles could help b e t t e r u n d e r s t a n d amphibian ecology and evolution
In Madagascar we are realizing only now h o w d i v e r s e i n m o r p h o l o g y a n d feeding modes these l a r v a e a r e w i t h extremely different oral structures and some of
them now apparently even with albeit simple systems of acoustic communication Vences said The true depth of specialization and competition in frogs which is important to explain their extraordinary diversity in the tropics may well take place at this level rather [than] at the level of adults

PNHS Pe t o f t he MonthBy Rachel Shirk PNHS Adoptions Coordinator
Steve is a 2 year old ball python His owners bought him as a baby but quickly became overwhelmed when he wouldnt eat Every month for 2 years the owners took him back to the pet store where they bought him and the pet store would force feed him With a pencil
As you can see in the photo Steves head is only about as big as a quarter He only weighs 87 grams He is so emaciated that his under belly in concave is some places He has very little muscle and struggles to keep his head up Steve has severe scarring on his esophagus from the metal on the eraser end of the pencil scratching his throat He is afraid to eat He needs to be fed with a syringe everyday to keep him alive
After Steve eats he slithers up my sleeve and hides out for a few minutes When hes ready he sticks his head out and will slowly come out I hope that with daily holding and some TLC he can be adopted out someday
December 2010 Board Meet ing MinutesPresent Saille Schumacher Brenda Huber Dale Drexler Aimee Kenoyer Guests Norm Hill Rachel Shirk Julie Sharkey Ariel Spade Rami Bryson
First topic was coverage of the NL Editor spot (a Board-appointed position) after Emily Johnsonrsquos term is up in January of 2011 Since no volunteer had stepped up two options were put before those present for discussion first to pay someone from the membership who would be willing to produce the NL for $50month second to pay a professional to produce the NL for $75month A call to the artist who did our ECRE graphics (Amanda Bloom) to get an idea of what wersquod be looking at for cost netted us a great deal as well as another side job for Amanda shersquoll be taking over from Emily after Januaryrsquos edition of the NL All Board members present voted in favor of hiring Amanda
Second topic of discussion was deterioration of the membership list and records in the recent past No motions were made or voted on but it was agreed to have sufficient oversight during 2011 to prevent recurrence

them now apparently even with albeit simple systems of acoustic communication Vences said The true depth of specialization and competition in frogs which is important to explain their extraordinary diversity in the tropics may well take place at this level rather [than] at the level of adults

Hey PNHS Itrsquos a new year and with it a newly-elected administrationhellipand although there are some familiar faces there was also some fresh blood on the ballot with this election and I am certainly looking forward to finding out who will be on the PNHS 2011 Board My first term 2009 was a great year for PNHS with the backing of an outstanding cadre of Board Members we made several key changes and worked to bring PNHS more fully into the 21st Century In the last year Jenn has raised the bar for me ndash we have an Expo to host (with the Beanfarmrsquos help) and have new records for both our yearly garage sale and our yearly Auction to try to beat I donrsquot know about you but Irsquom VERY excited about the coming year and canrsquot wait to get back into harness Your 2011 Board is officially sworn-in at the end of Januaryrsquos general meeting so look for the new Board Member contact information in your February Newsletter
Wersquoll be having a lot of your favorite old stand-byshellipmonthly speakers and activities Herps-of-the-Month fundraisers a BBQ in the summerhellipplus possibly a few new things this year so keep your eyes open and read your newsletter to follow the changes
In the 4 frac12 years Irsquove been a part of PNHS wersquove grown hugely in membership wersquove secured Federal status and legitimacy as a non-profit wersquove expanded our fundraisers and our Outreach program wersquove revolutionized our Adoptions program for internet-friendliness (thanks to some energetic and net-savvy Coordinators) our website has matured tremendously (thanks to our webmaster Geoff) newsletters look better than ever and last but not least we have introduced a ton of fun new activities to keep PNHS interesting and attract new members Wersquove also worked very hard to get our name out into the community and our efforts have produced some fantastic results However there is still more work to be done to get our mission out into the community and make sure people know who we are and that wersquore available as resource in a variety of ways One of my main goals for the year ndash aside from keeping cohesion and providing interesting activities for you our membership ndash is to continue to work to increase our exposure in the greater community and online through grass-roots efforts
I have some ideas of what Irsquod like to do this year but am always up for suggestions Have a herp contact whorsquod be a great guest-speaker Have a business or contact that could help us increase community exposure Have an idea for a fun activity Contact me and let me know I value everyonersquos input and am hoping to work with you to make this another great year for PNHS Thanks for asking me back and I really hope to do you proud and make you glad to be a member

By Charles Q Choi LiveScience ContributorMSNBC 121410

After Steve eats he slithers up my sleeve and hides out for a few minutes When hes ready he sticks his head out and will slowly come out I hope that with daily holding and some TLC he can be adopted out someday

types suggesting the sound of the clicks might yield clues about the size of the tadpoles making them They might be used to chase away other members of their own species the scientists speculated Their findings will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the journal Naturwissenschaften [Read about tadpoles with three eyes]
