Saving for the Holidays Just Got Easier! As enjoyable as the holidays are, you may be relieved that all the decorating, baking and shopping is over, not to return until next year! If you spent more than you planned and charged what you couldn’t actually afford, you will likely be paying for those purchases throughout the New Year. Educational Systems FCU wants to help you make next season trouble and debt-free!

Before the fruitcake becomes too stale to even consider eating, think now about putting cash aside for next year’s holiday season. By beginning today, you’ll save yourself the stress of trying to come up with gift money at the last minute, or purchasing everything with your credit cards.

Our Sub-Savings Account makes saving throughout the year easy. It’s simple! You determine the amount you want to save each month and we’ll automatically transfer money from your checking account to a special savings account earmarked for the holidays. In November, the balance of the account will be available to you—just in time for your holiday shopping!

To know how much you will need to set aside each month, first calculate how much you expect to spend on all holiday expenses next year (that includes cards, wrapping, decorations, food and entertaining, as well as travel). Divide by the number of months left in the year: that’s the amount that will be automatically transferred.

To set up your Sub-Savings Account, please visit your nearest branch location, our website, or give us a call at 800.356.6660.

As members of Educational Systems FCU, you have the opportunity to elect members of our Board of Directors. Two incumbents are eligible for re-election this year to serve on the Board.

The following directors, Dr. Jerome Clark and Mr. George Denny, have indicated to the Nominating Committee their desire and ability to continue for another term of three-years on the Board of Directors. After careful consideration, the Nominating Committee has nominated these individuals to the Board of Directors. Each candidate has agreed to serve if approved by the general membership.

Members may petition, the board’s secretary, if they wish to include additional names for nomination. Valid petitions must be signed by 1% of the members (374 members) to the attention of: Board of Director Secretary, c/o Karen Jung, P.O. Box 179, Greenbelt, MD 20768-0179. Included with the petition must be a statement of qualifications, biographical data and a signed certificate by the nominee stating that he/she is agreeable to the nomination and will serve if elected. All petitions must be received no later than February 11, 2011. If no candidates qualify through the petition process, there will be no election by ballot. Nominations will not be accepted during the Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2011, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Greenbelt Marriott, located at 6400 Ivy Lane, Greenbelt, MD.

2011 BOARD OF DIRECTORS NOMINEES

TIP #1: Believe it or not, a simple tube of silicone caulk may be your best investment this heating season. Polyurethane caulking is a good all-around choice for sealing your home from drafts and leaks. Inspect places to be caulked outside your home like gutters and downspout seams, plumbing and furnace vent pipes, flashing seams between roof and siding, and around door and window frames.

TIP #2: Weather stripping exterior doors and windows is an inexpensive heat-saver. To detect heat loss, just hold your hand at the edge of a window or door frame on a windy day. If you feel a draft, weather-strip the area. You could see substantial savings on your electric and heating bills.

TIP #3: It is good practice to have your roof inspected every 3-5 years for any punctures, cracks or breaks. A well-maintained roof can also lower your energy bills and help to prevent costly water damage.

TIP #4: Another thing to watch out for during the winter months is frozen pipes. If you ever have a frozen pipe situation, it can be big trouble and expensive to correct. One of the simplest methods to help prevent water pipes from freezing is to wrap them with heating tape. The heating element warms the pipes and prevents freezing.

TIP #5: Be sure your storm windows and doors are in place and in good condition. Even if your window frames and doors are caulked and weather stripped properly, heat may still escape.

Properly installed storm windows and doors can cut your home’s heat loss by 50 percent.

TIP #6: Check exterior doors for wear and tear. Look for signs of leaking around the sill and threshold. Make sure weather stripping and seals are okay. Inspect your home for torn or water spotted insulation. Carefully examine your exterior siding and replace any missing or damaged fasteners or screws.

TIP #7: Always remember to clean out and inspect rain gutters for leaks or holes. They should be slanted so water drains away from your home. If you find that your gutters are full and need to be cleaned, do so immediately. Not cleaning them could result in further unnecessary damage to your home.

Celebrating 55 Years (continued from page 1)

Attention students in Prince Georges, Charles, Calvert and St. Mary’s counties, the annual “Read and Hit a Home Run” with the Bowie Baysox and “Pinch onto Books” with the Blue Crabs reading programs have begun! Students have the opportunity to take advantage of two different reading programs. Both programs encourage students to read a certain number of books outside of their regular curriculum, and once the students have completed the reading, they will be awarded with a free ticket to a baseball game in the spring. To help students keep track of their reading, they can pick up a “Read and Hit a Home Run” or “Pinch onto Books” bookmark from their school’s reading specialist or teacher.

Help your Credit Union support education by taking advantage of both reading programs today!
