I have been working to ensure that our Chapter continues to function smoothly and effectively since John's recent resignation as Chapter Director. We sincerely thank John for his leadership and efforts on the Chapter's behalf.
As you may have heard, I have assumed the Chapter Director's job again on an interim basis. To date, I have made the following changes:
Hugh Waller will become Assistant Chapter Director, replacing Wayne Parmer and Rick Stanley (thanks, guys!).
Tom Fisher will become Chapter Rider Educator. Mike Share will be in charge of Public Relations. Ann Bartlow will take my place as Phone Coordinator.
All other current staff persons have agreed to continue in their present roles. I thank them very much for their efforts on our behalf. Of particular note is the appointment of Hugh as Assistant Chapter Director. As stated at the December Chapter meeting, the person taking the Assistant Chapter Director job should expect to assume the Chapter Director position (which should come no later than July).
On January 4th we will complete a very important planning session to determine what we want to do in 2001 and beyond. This will be reported on at the January Chapter meeting.

Personally, I am excited about the possibilities that exist for us. Please always remember that a chapter's strength lies in many members making contributions through input and personal involvement. Chapters are happiest when the activity level is high. With our focus on planning, 2001 will be a great year!
Ride safe and often,

EPA To Set New Emissions Standards For Bikes and ATVSAMA Press Release # G00035, November 22, 2000
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The federal Environmental Protection Agency is taking steps to clamp down on emissions from off-highway motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and may set new, stricter standards for streetbikes, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.
On November 17, EPA Administrator Carol Browner signed an official document declaring that off-road motorcycles, ATVs, and snowmobiles cause air pollution. That declaration is the first step in a process that will lead to proposed emission standards for those vehicles. Currently those classes of vehicles don't need to meet any federal emissions standards.
Besides setting out to propose rules governing emissions from new off-highway vehicles, the EPA said it will seek comment "on possible emission reductions from highway motorcycles as part of this rulemaking." The EPA indicated it will take a close look at California's strict emissions standards for streetbikes as a possible model for national standards.
The EPA is seeking comment in a variety of areas including:
Technologies that may be available to reduce emissions, and the cost of those technologies;
The timing and level of new emission standards;
Test procedures for measuring emissions from vehicles and engines; and
Compliance programs, including production-line and in-use testing by manufacturers.
The EPA directs those interested in commenting to check the Federal Register notice, which is available from the EPA Air and Radiation Docket by calling (202) 260-7548 (refer to Docket A-2000-01). Comments also may be made by e-mail to: [email protected].
Also, you can see the Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking and related documents on the EPA Office of Transportation and Air Quality web site at www.epa.gov/otaq.
The EPA said there will be further opportunities to comment later when it publishes a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in the Federal Register.
More information may be obtained by contacting Margaret Borushko at: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Transportation and Air Quality, 2000 Traverwood Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48105; or by e-mailing [email protected]. Telephone: (734) 214-4334.
Bob Lumsden hails from Bookhaven, Mississippi, very close to Natchez and Vicksburg. We had been talking about a long weekend motorcycle run to visit the Civil War sites in that area, and the weekend of October 6-8 looked like a great time to get away.
We prepared our GL-1500's and departed about 2:00 p.m. on Thursday for an evening stay in Mobile. The weather was sunny and warm, and we rode along I-10 directly into the sun. With the pit stops and a series of big drinks of liquid (plus a few candy bars), we made it to Mobile at about 7:30 p.m. It was dark by then, but we were safely in our motel and had worked up a good appetite.
From a previous stay in Mobile to attend a Civil War re-enactment at Ft. Blakely in April, we knew that there was a good seafood restaurant within walking distance of our motel. We strolled over and enjoyed a nice quiet meal and a couple of adult refreshments.
The next morning, we headed west to our destination for the morning, Beauvoir, just west of Biloxi. This is where Jefferson Davis spent his retirement years while writing his memoirs. The old home where he stayed became a retirement center for southern Civil War soldiers in the late 1880's. It now has a very nice museum, and the grounds have been restored to look as they did when the retirement home was in full usage.
It began to sprinkle at noon as we pulled into the parking lot. We toured the museum and then rode down the street a block or two
to eat a late lunch. We covered the bikes and went inside just as a thunderstorm hit. The waitress was charming and allowed us to sit at the table and kill an hour or so waiting on the rain to subside. It never did, despite us stretching the time by indulging in a very rich chocolate brownie and ice
cream for dessert.
We decided to hook a ride to the nearest casino and hope the rain would
subside. After two more hours of feeding nickels and quarters into machines that gladly accepted them, we determined that this was not an appropriate way to invest for the
retirement years. Rain or not, we had to leave.
We returned to our bikes, put on the rain suits (in the rain), fired up the bikes, and pulled into the 5 p.m. traffic. We rode north toward Brookhaven in the light rain and approaching darkness. The trip required about four hours, part of which was spent negotiating a winding two-lane road with rain and on-coming headlights.
Bob has many childhood friends in Brookhaven, and we stayed at the home of his friend Ernie, who owns a Harley. We would arise Saturday and take a long ride to Nathez and Vicksburg with Ernie leading the way.
The next morning, the weather had turned cool but was sunny. We rode west on U.S 84 (same one that goes through Dothan) and took a quick tour of Natchez. Ernie showed us a short section of the original Natchez Trace in the downtown area behind some store fronts and homes. We then rode on the restored Trace for about 15 miles and
turning west on a little country paved road. We were headed toward the location of Alcorn State College, near the Mississippi River.
The road was twisty and hilly. At one point, we passed an overgrown area with a small sign pointing to a state historic area. It was the location of an old plantation which had burned down during the Civil War. You would remember it from the movie "Gone with the Wind," when the characters returned to Ashley's old home place after the Yankees had burned it down - tall columns with vines growing on them.
We stopped at Grand Gulf where there was a Civil War battle. It now has a nice little museum and reconstructed town. The original town was destroyed in the battle.
Vicksburg was next, but it now was about 3 p.m. and was turning colder. We rode along the national park road where the Yankee troops were entrenched. The highlight of the visit was to stop at the museum housing an old Yankee gunboat. The boat had sunk in the Mississippi River during the battle for Vicksburg and was raised a few years ago in very good shape. It now is stored under a special display shed next to the museum housing artifacts taken from the wreck. Wonderful site for Civil War buffs!
By now, it was 4:30 p.m. and a cold front had hit. The wind picked up and the temperature dropped. We put on all of our warm clothes and headed for the barn by the quickest way possible. A good night's sleep was in order. On Sunday, Bob and I departed under bright sunshine and cool weather. We took the
back roads back toward Mobile and stayed again at the same motel. The ride was quite enjoyable until we hit the heavy traffic just
west of Mobile.
Monday we had good weather and left after our usual Waffle House breakfast. The ride back was uneventful, and we got home about 5 p.m. Total mileage was about 750. I did not keep track of my gasoline usage.
We did not have enough time to really visit the sites and tour the Civil
War homes. My wife is interested in taking a more extended vacation in that area, and I think it certainly will be worth it.
Bob and I are already thinking about the next trip. This time, we will head to Charleston, SC. Just think how many Civil War locations we can visit once we retire!
