The Baptism of Jesus Christ, which we celebrate this weekend, gives us an opportunity to reflect on what our own baptism means. A good place to start is with the word baptism. Its origin is the Greek word – baptizo – which means “to plunge or immerse.” By being baptized Jesus was immersed into humanity. Jesus Christ – God with us –was plunged into a very dysfunctional world … a world full of selfishness, injustice and fear. Consequently, we have a God who understands humanity. He understands our hurts. He gets our wounds. He feels our pain. Oftentimes the question arises: Why was Jesus baptized to begin with? After all, John the Baptist was preaching a baptism of repentance. Because Jesus had no sin, why would He accept baptism? Not only was Jesus immersing Himself into humanity. He was also setting an example. By humbly accepting baptism, Jesus was modeling behavior for us. But Jesus isn’t simply an example to follow. He’s a life to be lived! Christianity is not simply about being a good person by following Jesus. As important as that is, to be a Christian means to be drawn into the inner life of God. To be a Christian means to share in Christ’s relationship with the Father. Christ was plunged into humanity, but we’re immersed into Divinity at baptism. That’s what Christ meant in John 17 when He said, “I in them and you in me.” That’s what Saint Paul meant when he exclaimed that “you’re IN Christ” (2 Corinthians 5). Jesus Christ has dwelled in us since our baptism. Therefore, we are sons and daughters of God the Father. Friends, the last line of the Gospel this weekend is this: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Because of our baptism, God the Father is saying this to us! God bless you, Father Matthew Guckin January 10, 2021 Our Lady of Mt. Carmel 064

No Christmas Envelopes!!! Are you missing your Christmas envelope? The Post Office has informed me that they are understaffed because of COVID illnesses. Also, there has been an immense increase in their volume due to online shopping. Some mail has moved fine but other mail did not. I have been told that there are no guarantees bulk rate mail will be moved. We appreciate your continued support of our parish. In fact, we depend on it. Please plan to make a Christmas donation to the extent you are able. There are several ways to do this. You can donate through Parish Giving simply by going to www.parishgiving.org (this is how I support the Church). Or, you can send a check (with "Christmas" on the memo line) to 235 E. State Street, Doylestown, PA 18901. Finally you can place an envelope with your check in it in the collection basket at Mass (please write "Christmas" on the envelope). I truly appreciate any support you can give to the parish. God bless you, Father Matthew Guckin

Please remember to save your grocery receipts from McCaffrey’s and Altomonte’s and place them in the baskets at the church entrances. These two local grocery stores will give a donation to Saint Vincent dePaul based on your purchases.

SCAM ALERT! Please be advised that there are a number of nationwide scams that have started to affect the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the parish of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The scams are texts and emails asking for assistance, gift cards and/or money. Please know that the clergy and staff of Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish would not ask for assistance in these manors. We have designed programs such as Sunday collections, the Giving Tree and authorized Missionaries to collect funds. Any email soliciting for donations from Fr. Matthew Guckin, Fr. Paschal Onunwa, Fr. Matt Brody, Msgr. Charles Hagan or Fr. Harold McKale should be ignored. These are scam emails and are fraud. Please feel free to call the Rectory Parish Office at 215-348-4190 with any concerns.

Weekday Mass & Snow Removal Friends, in an attempt to keep everyone safe, we will not have public Mass on weekdays if the School District cancels school. A few weeks ago one of our workers was unable to see a person who was walking to Mass near the church. He was driving a vehicle removing snow. Thankfully, no one was hurt and an accident was avoided. Please listen to the radio or TV reports for Central Bucks School District and school clos-ings. If local schools are closed I ask that you watch the daily Mass on our livestreaming option. God bless, Father Matthew Guckin

The most common occasion for making an Act of Spiritual Communion is when we cannot fulfill our obligation to attend Mass on a Sunday or Holy Day of Obligation, whether because of illness or bad weather, or some other reason outside of our control. You can make an Act of Spiritual Communion at any time and make multiple times a day-even on days when we have been able to receive the Eucharist. Each Act of Spiritual Communion that we make increases our desire to receive sacra-mental Communion, and protects us until we can receive Holy Communion sacramentally again.

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION (St. Alphonsus Ligouri)

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramen-

tally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

What is the Prayer Chain? Our Prayer Chain was established many years ago for anyone needing prayers for a variety of situations happening in their life. The situation may be social, finan-cial, health related or simply a personal concern that might be needed for spiritual support. A request may be made by yourself or by someone on your behalf. To request prayers, please call Barbara at 215-345-6219; she will take any information you wish to share. She will in turn pass your request along to the person heading up the email chain. The email contact list has over 40 dedicated persons who are ready to begin praying. All requests will remain on the list for approximately one month; however, the duration may exceed the one month time if needed. Should you wish to become a member of the prayer chain, please call Barbara; an email address is needed. Often the question of “How do I pray?” is asked. The answer is simple – ANY WAY YOU WISH. It could be a Rosary, a single prayer, an aspiration or just asking God to support those who requested help.

An Examination Of Conscience Quick Guide

1. Where do we place our passion? Politics, The News or God? That is, where do we spend down our time and energy?
