Dear Janssen School Community,

We are almost two full months into the school year and The Janssen

Way is everywhere: classrooms, hallways, lunchroom, recess, and

Morning Paws. The Janssen Way is the practice each day of our com-

munity values: kindness, honesty, respect, and responsibility. Do our

students make some bad choices during the day? They do, yet what is

rewarding is how our staff works with them and how our students learn

from their mistakes. Our school culture is based on our behaviors each

day. By knowing the expectations, reflecting and tweaking behaviors,

and supporting each other, our culture continues to grow.

Last month I referenced our district’s vision: Students will grow as

problem solvers to reach their potential in academics, arts, and co-

curricular. During this month, our teachers continued their learning on

problem solving and provided opportunities for students to problem

solve inside and outside our classrooms. It is so awesome to hear from

our students their thinking when identifying a problem and coming up

with a solution for that problem. At Janssen, we refer to these behav-

iors as “owning their work”. We have only begun to focus on students

as problem solvers and we are very excited to continue our learning to

support our students with these set of skills so they can transfer their

knowledge at home and community.

As I continue to visit our classrooms, I am noticing the continuous form-

ing of positive relationships with staff and students. We see that when

our students have a belonging to our school and they have adults with

whom they can connect, they feel cared for and safe. Building positive

relationships with our students is a vital component to them reaching

their potential.

The last thing that I want to share with you is saying thank you to all

our parents during drop-off and pick up times. Thank you for being

safety conscious and patient. Our supervisors have noticed this and ap-

preciate all of us working together to make Janssen a safe place. Safety

in school is extremely important to us and we continue to review our

practices to continually improve.

BACKGROUND CHECKS

If you are interested in volunteering at school,

whether in your child’s classroom or chaperoning

a field trip, you need to have a completed back-

ground check form on file with the school dis-

trict. Please keep in mind that these take 2

weeks to complete. If you are not sure if you

have a completed check on file or if you have any

questions, please contact the school office.

EMERGENCY MEDICATIONS

Please be aware that emergency medications

that are provided for use during the school day

will not be accessible before or after school

hours. Parents and students must plan ahead to

have emergency medication available during

school activities such as clubs and sports. If an

emergency arises and a student does not have

their emergency medication available, 911 will

be called.

TITLE 1 INFORMATION

At the Westside Elementary PTO meeting on

Thursday, November 8, at 6:30, in the library,

there will be a short presentation explaining Ti-

tle 1. They will share how our schools benefit

from these funds as well as inform parents about

our programs. You are invited to join us for this.

VETERAN’S DAY PROGRAM

Janssen Elementary will be having its annual

Veterans’ Day Program on Thursday, Novem-

ber 8 at 2:45 in the big gym. The veterans from

VFW Post 10544 in Combined Locks are spon-

soring their annual veterans cards contest. Stu-

dents in grades 1-4 will be creating cards for vet-

erans. First, second and third place prizes are

awarded in each of these grade levels. These

cards will be sent to veterans on duty in various

parts of the world. Families and friends are wel-

come to attend.

JANSSEN PBIS MONTHLY NEWS

Here is what is happening at Janssen this

month!

Monthly Character Trait

Our character trait this month is respect, with

an emphasis on manners. Our paws and think

questions at morning Paws will focus on how

students show respect both at school and in the

community.

Dog Bones

Students have been collecting dog bones for good

behavior like crazy! This shows that our bull-

dogs are showing they understand the expecta-

tions and are following the Janssen Way. Our

bulldog Buddy has to get one more “hit” (fill one

more bucket with dog bones) and the students

will earn a schoolwide celebration!

MVP

We had our first group of MVP’s chosen for Sep-

tember. Their pictures and a description of what

makes them MVPs are displayed on the wall

across from the office.

JANSSEN COUNSELOR CORNER

Happy October Everyone!

Here are some of the things happening in Life Skills classes and around Janssen for the month of Octo-

ber:

National Bullying Prevention Month

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Schools all across the country will be focusing on in-

structing students about bullying and how to handle bullying. For all Life Skills classes I will be doing

two lessons that address bullying. These lessons have already begun and will occur over the next three

weeks. Students will also be discussing bullying in their classrooms with their teachers. Of course our

discussion of this topic does not end there. We reinforce the importance of a positive school environment

by focusing on the values of our Janssen Way and by working with our students on social and emotional

skills to handle conflicts and problems.

Red Ribbon Week

October 23-31 is Red Ribbon Week. This week focuses on educating students to be drug and alcohol free.

In honor of this topic, I will be delivering age appropriate lesson to all grades on keeping bodies healthy

and making safe choices about what we put into our bodies. The 1st and 2nd graders also will receive an

extra lesson from the High School Peacemakers program, also focusing on healthy choices. These les-

sons will be taking place in the beginning of November.

Brr...I guess it is Fall

As you have noticed, our weather has taken a turn for the chilly. Please remember to send your children

to school with the appropriate attire for the weather. Students do go outside for recess two times a day,

weather permitting, so please ensure that they are bundled up.

Looking Ahead to the Holidays

Every holiday season we are fortunate to have several offerings to give to families in need, including

Thanksgiving dinners and a Culver’s Christmas dinner. If you feel like your family would benefit from

some of these opportunities, please do not hesitate to call or email me. Your information is kept private

between myself and our seasonal giving committee.

When to Keep Your Child Home

Children should be kept home from school when they don’t feel well. It is important to get the rest they need to

recover, and to prevent the spread of germs to other children and the staff. If you are unsure of when to keep your

child home, please contact the school nurse or your family medical provider.

The following symptoms may suggest a communicable disease. Children who have the following symptoms should

be kept home from school until a doctor has seen them, they no longer have symptoms indicating a communicable

disease or they have received treatment for at least 24 hours for certain diseases.

SORE THROAT

An oral temperature of 100.4 or higher indicates a fever. If your child has a temp of 100.4 or higher at school he/she will be sent home. Your child will be excluded from school until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product).

If a fever is accompanied by a sore throat, stomach ache or head ache it may be strep throat. Strep throat is diagnosed by a throat culture obtained at a medical clinic. If your child is diagnosed with strep throat, your child will be excluded from school for 24 hours after initiation of appropriate antibiotic and fever free without the use of a fever reducer (Tylenol or Ibuprofen product).

If your child has an episode of vomiting and/or diarrhea at school, he/she will be sent home. Anyone with these symptoms will be excluded from school until symptom free for 24 hours.

A cough may be a sign of many different illnesses. If a cough is accompanied by a fever, sore throat, body aches or any other symptoms you should keep your child home. Any cough that lasts for more than several days should be discussed with a doctor.

Rashes and infected sores needed to be diagnosed by a medical provider. Many skin rashes such as impetigo, scabies, chicken pox, Fifth disease or Hand Foot and Mouth disease are very contagious. Students may return to school once the rash has been diagnosed and treated for 24 hours or cleared by a doctor. Open sores from illnesses such as chicken pox and impetigo may need to be covered at school with bandages for several days.

Symptoms that prevent the student from active participation is usual school activities OR student is requiring more care than school that can safely provide.

Janssen School Book Fair

The Follett Book Fair will be held in the LMC and open during

conference hours.

The whole school is excited about our upcoming book fair. An amazing

selection of books is headed our way! Mark your calendar so you can be sure

to join the fun. You will also have a chance to contribute books to your child’s

classroom library. A percentage of the sales will benefit our LMC.

The Kimberly Youth Wrestling Program is open to all youth in grades 4K through 6th grade.
