BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

• Valerie Jane Morris Goodall was born on April 3rd of 1934 in London, England.

• She’s a primatologist, ethologist, anthropologist, and UN Messenger of Peace.

• She’s considered to be the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees.

• She has been married two times. The first time with Hugo van Lawick and they had a son, Hugo Eric Louis. And the second time with Derek Bryceson. Both marriages were difficult.

KEY FACTS IN HER LIFE

• She studied for 55 years the social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania.

• She’s the founder of the Jane Goodall institute and the Roots & Shoots program.

• She has served on the board of the Nonhuman Rights Project since its founding in 1996.

SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES RELATED WITH CHIMPANZEES

• She discovered that chimpanzees could use “tools”, a characteristic that in that time was thinked it was only unique of humans. She discovered this when she observed a chimpanzee using a stick to “fishing” termites in a hole.

• She discovered that chimpanzees weren’t only vegetarians. They also ate meat. She observed that they hunted in groups and that they usually hunt small primates such as the colobus monkey. She also observed that they share the prey equally between them .

• She discovered a tendency of agression between different chimpanzee troops. Goodall observed condutes of cannibalism from the dominant females to the baby chimpanzees, for maintain their dominance.

ENVIROMENTAL ACTIVISM

• Goodall is the former president of “Advocates for Animals”, an organisation based in Edinburgh, Scotland, that campaigns against the use of animals in medical research, zoos, farming and sport.

• She’s a patron of population concern charity “Population Matters”, and is a currently an ambassador for “Disneynature”.

• In 2011, she became a patron of Australian protection group “Voiceless”, the animal protection institute.

ROOTS & SHOOTS

• Jane Goodall founded “Roots & Shoots” in 1991.

• She founded it with the goal of bringing together youth from preschool to university age to work on environmental, conservation and humanitarian issues.

• The organization has local chapters in 132 countries , with 8000 local groups and 100000 young people involved.

JANE GOODALL PRESENT ACTIVITY

• In the present, Jane Goudall is a very important and busy activitist in favour of the nature’s rights.

• She travel all around the world trying to make aware people of being better with the animals, with the environment and in general with the world.

PERSONAL OPINION

• In my opinion, Jane Goudall is one of the most important scientist women and person in this world. The way that defend the ones that have no voice and how she makes aware people of being better with environment and with living beings, her way of being and more other things make her a great person and living being.
