Each year the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce Education Committee awards $1000 scholarships to four high school seniors.

One scholarship winner is selected from each of the three Lee’s Summit high schools, and one is selected from a school outside of the district. One of the applicant’s parents must be a full-time employee of a Chamber member.

Applicants are evaluated based on the following criterion: • A strong work ethic• A commitment to community

involvement• An endless pursuit of continued

growth and improvement in all facets of their lives

Interested students should have at least a 3.0 grade point average and submit a completed application no later than February 15, 2013. Applications can be found on lschamber.com.

Southeast Enterprises Wants to Make Your Trash Their Treasure

Membership Breakfast • Jan. 18

Southeast Enterprises is collecting used, tangled, broken, working or not, strands of holiday lights. Southeast Enterprises will take the lights, recycle them and keep them out of the landfill.

Chamber members can drop their lights off at the Lee’s Summit North Recycling Center, 1951 NE Douglas, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. or Saturday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Donations will be accepted now until January 13.

After collecting the lights, Southeast Enterprises will have their teams

of Jackson County citizens that are intellectually and developmentally disabled prepare them for recycling by cutting all lights from cords, sorting recyclable materials and taking those materials to the proper facilities for reuse.

How will your lights help Southeast Enterprises? All lights collected will

provide an employment opportunity that challenges and helps their team

develop and capitalize on their motivation, confidence, spirit and determination. In addition, all proceeds will be used to pay the team, as well as fund future employment opportunities.

Chamber Members Donate to Two Member NonprofitsA very special thank you to all of our members who collectively donated $178 to Coldwater, and more than 900 pounds of food for Lee’s Summit Social Services at the Holiday Reception on December 5.

Each year the Chamber and Economic Development Council collect donations at the event for the less fortunate. Once again the giving spirit of

our members was evident.

The donations were delivered to both nonprofits and were very much appreciated. Thanks again to the generosity of our members.

Lee’s Summit Medical Center Awarded “A” for Patient SafetyLee’s Summit Medical Center recently announced that it was honored with an “A” on Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The “A” score was awarded to Lee’s Summit Medical Center in the latest update to the Hospital Safety Score, the A, B, C, D or F scores assigned to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. The Hospital Safety Score was compiled under the guidance of

patient safety experts and is designed to give the public information they can use when selecting a hospital for emergency services or other health care.

Lee’s Summit Medical Center is the only hospital in the Kansas City metropolitan area to receive the highest safety rating in the latest data released Nov. 28 by The LeapFrog Group.

Community Health Fair & Legacy Park Community Center’s Birthday BashLee’s Summit Parks & Recreation, in conjunction with the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce, will host Legacy Park Community Center’s Birthday Bash and Community Health Fair on Saturday, January 12 from 7 a.m.–5 p.m. at Legacy Park Community Center, 901 NE Bluestem Road. The event is free and open to the public.

The Lee’s Summit Chamber Health Fair, held from 8:30–11:30 a.m., consists of health information and free health screenings from area hospitals and health focused businesses.

Don’t forget about the Teddy Bear Check-Up Station. Encourage your children to bring in their favorite doll or animal for a full work-up to guarantee their good health for the new year.

The 9th Annual LPCC Birthday Bash, hosted by Lee’s Summit Parks & Recreation, will be open from 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Guests can enjoy all the amenities in the facility plus take advantage of some special highlights including chair massages and a fitness expo.

Nominations Being Accepted for 2013 Res In Motus Awards The Lee’s Summit Chamber is calling for nominations for the 2013 Res In Motus Business of the Year Awards.

The Chamber is recognizing four separate award categories that best represent Business in Motion:• Sanctimonia Award- Charitable/

Service Agency (More than 20 employees enter in Magnus Category)

• Vegrandis Award- 5 or less full-time equivalent employees

• Parvus Award- 6-20 full-time equivalent employees

• Magnus Award- more than 20 full-time equivalent employees

Criteria for the awards include:• Lee’s Summit Chamber member

in good standing• Service to the community

and to the Chamber• In business a minimum of

three years• A commitment to good

business practice• Prudent business

management strategies• A history of good employee

relations.

Each year the Chamber’s Education Committee and the R-7 School District collaborate to recognize educational excellence. The Chamber and school district partner to honor 12 annual Excellence In Teaching Award recipients at an evening reception where the Teacher of the Year is announced.

This program is designed to focus on the role of the teacher and their overall dedication to service and excellence in the profession. Twelve teachers/counselors/library media specialists will be recognized by the Chamber with the Excellence In Teaching Award. Those among the 12 who are full-time classroom teachers will also be finalists in the R-7 Teacher of the Year program.

The Teacher of the Year is recognized as a representative of all the outstanding teachers in the district. The R-7 Teacher of the Year competes in the Missouri Teacher of the Year program, sponsored

by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, in conjunction with the National Teacher of the Year program.

Consider nominating the individual who comes to mind when you think of the phrase ‘outstanding teacher’ for the Lee’s Summit Chamber Excellence In Teaching and the R-7 Teacher of the Year award. You may nominate your favorite Lee’s Summit R-7 teacher, library media specialist or guidance counselor by filling out an application available at lsr7.org

The deadline for applications is January 18, 2013. Please note that nominees must have worked for five years or more in the R-7 School District. To find out if a nominee has at least five years experience in the district, please call 816-986-1017.

As we look back on 2012 we can see that for the most part our lives are out of whack. The increasing demands of everyday responsibilities and obligations are taking their toll on today’s families.

Technology has created an environment that emphasizes the urgent at the cost of what’s truly important. Never before have we been bombarded with this degree of unrelenting information. From iPhones, iPads and emails, our always-on-call lifestyle has created an “information overload” resulting

in quality of life deprivation, which produces less restful sleep, increased stress and an overall negative on our health and well-being.

This problem has been around for some time. In fact, the following statement was recorded 5,000 years ago and translated from the Tao Te Chang:… “The overall balance in your life does more than affect your emotions; it goes straight to the bottom line of your physical health.”

So, why not make a New Year’s Resolution to at least once a week, shut

off the electronics and take a family time-out. Seek out some family activities that allow you to access life on your own terms: a quiet dinner, a board game, hug your kids, cuddle-up with your significant other, read your children a bedtime story or simple take a deep breath and gaze up at the stars all the time remembering what life is all about. Happy New Year!
